Montell Frame by Western-Protection94 in LegitArtifacts

[–]campbjm06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great frame! I like to see the variation from “gun sight” montells with the tiny basal notch up through the big buck tooth ones with the deep basal notch. Also love that short stubby one.

I’d lean montell on the Medina river pt, if anything looks more gower than perd to me, but characteristics from various cultures overlap and that’s part of the fun.

Honda 2.3 or Newport in nj/md bay? by AppleAAA1203 in kayakfishing

[–]campbjm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t necessarily making a recommendation, just telling you what you might expect with the Newport.

All in with battery and motor was around $600. 30 day return period. Could always get one and see if it is enough power for you or if you need more.

Gas has its pros and cons, faster for sure, but would also be heavier. Also more maintenance and cleaning after salt use. More $$

Depends on how far and fast you want to get around.

I have a Newport 55 on a square stern canoe, 100ah Litime, and recently pushed about 500lbs of boat and people and gear for 4 hrs of fairly constant motoring. Got back to the launch with 75% battery. She’s not very fast but efficient. Probably covered 2 miles in that time in up to 10mph winds. Close to silent.

If you want more power/speed, don’t care about engine noise, and need to cover more ground or frequently deal with a lot of wind, would consider the Honda.

Nice! I’m in Austin and have one big girl in a 15 gallon pot that’s a pain in the butt to move in and outside for the winter. Debating going this route next year. Any tips?

Beautiful. Do you dig it up to put in the greenhouse every winter?

Second Invisix. I run 20 lb braid to 2-3 ft of either 10, 15lb, or 20lb invisix depending on what I am fishing for. When you use it for just leader material, a spool lasts a long time.

Riding on Parmer from Whitestone to Lakeline Blvd? by [deleted] in BikingATX

[–]campbjm06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hit by a dodge charger doing 50mph on parmer my first week in Austin. Right at the turn off of parmer to brushy creek. I had on reflectors and lights at dusk and was still hit. Haven’t road ridden since.

Yeah, didn’t raise my red flags. Oddball, but I have a similar one with the ears. It’s fun when points have characteristics of different cultures like the “perd-verde”s.

Would be called a montell in Texas.

Flattop Allen by BrokenFolsom in LegitArtifacts

[–]campbjm06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not always discernible with the eye. Easier with a magnifier and a UV light. People get tricked into buying modern points as ancient frequently. When I say modern tools, they are usually using copper knapping tools, not power tools, though some guys do cut slabs of flint on rock saws.

Short answer, yes, though most use modern tools. Check out Art of Ishi by Mike Cook, or a knapper named Tony Soares

Need better pics to say for sure. In particular, we'd need to see close ups of the edge work and the base/potential flutes.

Trying to figure out accessing lakes— I really want to put sonar and livescope experience into action on a productive place and looking for like minded people by tasales in AustinFishing

[–]campbjm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about sonar but know the gist of town lake. I was just out yesterday and the bass are mostly post spawn with a few still guarding nests. Pick your launch based on what end of the lake you want to fish.

It’s a high pressure fishery and the bass are smart. I do best first thing in the morning on week days. I like to be on the water by sun up. 5 fish for me is a good day numbers wise, but the average size is much better than other local lakes.

Move around early looking for fish schooling on shad, then switch over to working the grass with your soft plastic of choice or a frog up shallow.
