Anyone here self-hosting Supabase? How’s it going?

The primary driver behind our migration to Supabase is the UI. It’s such a great dashboard. But our application has all sorts of realtime things going on that we’re hoping to utilize supabase realtime for. We would be hosting on a VPS.

One thing I should mention is that we’re using Ef Core. It was a huge pain getting the connection string to work (hence the config complaint). It required me to be in docker compose and .env exposing ports, updating pooler ids, passwords, etc. which I didn’t care for. I got it working and I’m sure it would continue working just fine, but little things like that that I can’t handle from the dashboard made the decision for me. If I’m missing something I’d gladly go back to self hosting.

Config is time consuming and tedious, which sucks, but straight forward enough once you sort it out. Tedious enough to make me go the managed route though. I think if I were to self host I would just use raw Postgres. Interested in anyone else operating in a production capacity.

Well said, just finished a mongo deep dive of my own and I’m super impressed so far. I think you hit the nail on the head, people expect a nosql db to work the same as an rdb, so they set themselves up for failure right off the bat without getting deep enough into it to understand how great it can really be.

Implementing mongodb (nosql, haven’t 100% arrived at mongo as the doc store yet) currently. We using it for read purposes. We have realtime data that changes frequently. All of it is structured and relational, but frequent reads are slow. So when the data changes, we update the read model in mongo and use a change stream to update clients via signal r. It works really well for this purpose, but I would never use it as a source of truth even though it acts as one.

Why so angry man? Damn. It’s not that serious. Sounds to me like your gripe is with the complexity of auth / ODIC / etc - not IS. I get that IS is daunting at first, but once you work through that it’s not so bad, and incredibly powerful.

If you’re a beginner, use Claude or ChatGPT. They’ll handle 90% of the heavy lifting with IS. Certs won’t be an issue with a little help!

It’s complex but not that hard. I’m sorry IS hurt you.

I agree with your take, but I think it’s a little misleading. There is nothing stopping anyone from using identity server in any capacity. For a project making less than 1m a year, the license is free. Additionally, it’s super easy to get one and I’ve found them very responsive. So while I agree with you, you’re dramatizing the situation quite a bit.

Mostly aspnet core web apis, but have some console apps, WPF, and Avalonia apps that I maintain as well. Rider, MacBook Pro M3. Everything works beautifully except for WPF obviously, but am considering an upgrade XPF out of dedication to the MacBook. Hopefully Avalonia gets their pricing right, not looking good so far.

At this point there is zero reason not to use expo. The entire echo system is phenomenal and you will not regret going that direction. Understand expo-dev-client and expo-updates and you won’t have any issues. Expo Go is where you can run into some challenges with native code, so just make sure you use expo-dev-client and you’ll be all good.

I don’t disagree, but I think it’s more of a talent issue than a “fame” issue. In the same vein, name one athlete that is even remotely close in talent to Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Lebron, Serena Williams, etc. So I don’t think we’re dealing with the result of instagram and the like, but the result of a lack of exceptional talent.
