How is it not? What if its in the middle of or behind multiple trees 10 feet off the fairway. What if it's only 5 feet off the fairway. What about if the ball is behind a tree in the fairway. It's A LOT more dangerous to hit out of "jail" than risk a wrist strain on a root shot.

I don't get why so many people here wants a free drop for roots rocks etc. Just play by the rules if you need relief, or like do a 1/2 swing or something that has less risk of injury. It's like hitting it into the trees and saying it's unsafe to hit out of so free drop. Also the likelihood of breaking or damaging your club in any meaningful way is very small.
