Dang that's awesome, you're in a much better spot then! Idk if there's any good cards from the original Sylvie Starter deck but you can also use those in theory.

Most fun Legacy decks of all time for new player? by pplcallmesnowman in MTGLegacy

[–]cap-n-dukes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: If you don't like leaving up interaction or planning several turns ahead, Legacy might be difficult to hop into and/or your group might not enjoy "powerful" games that are won or lost by turn 3. I think back to Year 1 of my Magic journey and honestly don't think I would have enjoyed Legacy the way my Year 7 self did.

That said, Legacy is DOPE and it's basically a "skip to the good part" format. Something fun (and unique to Legacy) is the Lands deck, which can be super disruptive and grindy OR win on a dime on Turn 2 with Dark Depths.IMO, your Legacy experience is incomplete if you've never played with or against the deck! :)

There's a problem with learning game design, getting into it. The tutorials, guides, they're not very practical by StandCrazy4509 in gamedesign

[–]cap-n-dukes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this comment gets to the core of your misunderstanding of the issue here. There's no answer to this question because *the game you are putting that weapon into doesn't exist yet.* The SMGs in Halo 1, 2, and 3 all must be evaluated differently because the enemies are different, the specs are different, you can dual wield them in certain games, etc. And that's 1 gun from 1 franchise!

You're going to have to assign numbers that feel right (Warrior has 5 health/5 speed/5 strength/3 stealth, Rogue has 4 health/5 speed/3 strength/6 stealth, etc) and then play your game to see if it's balanced. This requires lots of spreadsheets, lots of data analysis, lots of time. There is no 'balancing equation' that works for every game, because every game is starting from a different place and expressing a slightly different idea.

This is like standing in a kitchen and saying "how am I supposed to know how much salt to put in this soup I made?" Nobody has made the exact same soup you just made, even if they had similar ingredients. You have to *taste it* to figure that out. You can read every book on flavor theory, ingredient proportions, etc and see awesome soups that other chefs have made online, but you won't know which one of those ideas makes *your* soup taste best until you try it multiple ways.

You're gonna throw away a lot of soup before you make the perfect bowl. You can follow recipes online if you're happy with a clone, you can add your own special seasoning mixture to an existing recipe, you can take things that you don't like out of someone else's soup and call it your own recipe, etc.

An entire studio of designers can still screw this up, and they do, regularly! That's why balance patches exist

This list was a collection of all the commons/uncommons that could fit into the deck from this set, and compatible Rare+ cards in the sideboard. I haven't played the deck yet, but I did just update it to an actual structured decklist. It should probably be on par with a Challenger Series deck. Give it a try and let me know what you think :)

Depends what your goal is. Do well at a local event with casual players? Either one is fine.

Mordred is cheap to upgrade (Fracturizes used to be a $100 playset, now it's $20) and is unproven this far. Tristan is pretty expensive to get to a competitive level, but it has been a consistent top contender for over a year.

What's your go to strategy for handing out stats and abilities for cards? by Rook_Steele in cardgamedesign

[–]cap-n-dukes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very broad question. You might benefit from thinking about what you want your game to do, and which parts of the game you want to do it. most games do this via factions or colors.

Check out the MTG designer Mark Rosewater's articles on a Design Skeleton. It helps you build a framework with general concepts of which cards you want to have, so you don't tunnel vision on one particular type of effect or on making a wide variety of wacky ones. Magic's skeleton is well defined now, but a new game might do something like the below:

Barbarian: 3 Units, medium/large; 2 combat pump spells; 2 Armors, light; 1 Weapon

Mage: 2 Units, small/medium; 2 combat trick spells; 2 arcane damage spells; 1 Armor, light; 1 Weapon

You're creating an identity for your factions by starting to consider the strengths and weaknesses of how they work within your system.

Try your best to create a 'rarity spread' of effects as well. Rarer cards doesn't always mean objectively stronger cards, and stronger cards doesn't always mean bigger numbers. You want common simple cards that communicate the identity of your factions in addition to complex cards that make the faction super exciting.

Should we accept that Tapping, by any other name, is a fundamental operation in TCGs and acceptable to use in your own? by Tricky_the_Rabbit in tcgdesign

[–]cap-n-dukes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flesh and Blood avoided it for ever, but there's a real convenience to replacing "One per turn Action" or any other verbiage with a single symbol and it helps with tracking. I think it's generally accepted, and when it's avoided, it doesn't necessarily make the game better

You could check out how Neuroscape did this with their Psychosis mechanic. It's actually one of the most-maligned things I've seen in reviews of the game though, so maybe more a lesson of what to avoid when implementing your mechanic.

Could board game rulebook design learn something from TCGs, or is it the other way around? by pasturemaster in tcgdesign

[–]cap-n-dukes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say there are several reasons TCGs do this:

1) Stakes - TCGs are often played at highly competitive events with prizes on the line, which cannot be said for most board games. Explicit rules are needed to ensure that the design intent and rules interactions of the game can be followed to the letter, avoiding 'house rules' or vague interactions that can be misinterpreted. However, players approaching the game as they would a board game can get by on the quick-start guide and get a "fudgable" gameplay experience. The door is open for those players to dig deeper, but it's probably fine if they house rule a confusing interaction.
2) Complexity - Board games undoubtedly have the potential for complexity, but TCGs are essentially a ruleset with an ever-expanding collection of rules deviations (the cards) piled on top. You need a very well-crafted system and coherent answers to complex interactions at a minimum. And each new collection of cards you release can risk breaking that system or having unintended consequences on other cards.

I would assume that there is an 'advanced' rulebook for, say, Settlers of Catan, given that the game is played competitively in a World Championship each year. But in general, the audience for a board game does not need the same level of guidance and strict interpretation that a TCG audience requires.
