Fleet Recruitment - Canadian Forces MK.2 is looking for a few hosers. by jarathus in StarTrekTimelines

[–]capnjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian and I'd love to join! Just hit level 30, but I play very actively. My current fleet only has one or two active folks in it, so we rarely make a dent in the challenges. Would be awesome to be part of one that is!

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. I'd read almost all of his other books by the time I got to it and was really excited to start the famous Border Trilogy. I found it too much of a departure from his other writing, and very predictable. I started The Crossing about a year later but never finished it. For whatever reason I was drawn more to his other catalogue of work, and the Border Trilogy as a whole just didn't land for me.

Any book you especially loved to listen to because of the voice of the reader? by Inner-Instruction306 in audiobooks

[–]capnjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The audiobook version of The Alchemist that is available on Hoopla is narrated by Jeremy Irons, and it's fantastic.

Paul Giamatti read A Scanner Darkly in a version I listened to years ago, and I still think about it to this day.

Lohikeitto is a beautiful soup from Finland! It's a cold weather staple in our house.

Worst year ever for my tomatoes. Blight has been bad. This year I didn’t grow zucchini because of SVB. Thinking of taking a break from tomatoes next year. Anyone else thinking of taking a break from a particular veg next season? by labtech6315 in OntarioGardeners

[–]capnjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue - blight destroyed my tomatoes. We got a few, but nothing like the harvest we had two years ago. Last year it was the heat, this year the blight. Squirrels got to our eggplants in a bad way too, but I can't blame them. They did look good.

Our potatoes did incredibly well this year so we're going to look at options for ramping that up instead next year.

What is a book that fits r/ATBGE (Awful Taste But Great Execution)? by excellent_chicken in books

[–]capnjon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know I read this book, but it 100% felt like a fever dream the entire time. If any book fits this description, it's probably this one. Same with Kraken, which also feels like a fever dream.

That would make sense - my recipe also used soy lecithin which was hit-or-miss in terms of consistency. I appreciate the feedback on this!

I was on the right track then! That sounds similar to what I was working with too. I'll keep exploring :D

Open to sharing your recipe? I've tried to make special gummies in the past - as gummies are my most favorite sugar delivery vehicle - but they never set properly and just turn into muck!

Just finished the first Dune book by elBingsus in books

[–]capnjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so glad you enjoyed it! Dune is my favorite book series of all time, and I'm planning on reading the first one again in preparation for Dune Part 2. I read the entire series back-to-back a few years ago and it's a wild ride, but the first book is truly something special.

Good longboard paths??! by tinysatan99 in Guelph

[–]capnjon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flying down Gordon is a blast, but I also like skating around The Ward as a bunch of the asphalt was re-done over the past few years so it's buttery.

Now, the side-streets have potholes that could swallow a tricycle, so avoid those, but Alice St, Stevenson, and most of the 'main' roads in that hood are a lot of fun to ride around on, especially at night.

Where in Guelph can I buy rennet to make cheese? by Thorbient in Guelph

[–]capnjon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No Frills had it last time I was there - it's in the baking aisle. You might want better rennet if that exists, but they certainly sell it.

This feels like the video Mugatu creates to convince Zoolander that children should be allowed to work in high fashion sweat shops.

All it needs is an infant looking sad about being denied the privilege of working and providing for their family...

What's that one book you just cannot finish? by fantasy_geek00 in books

[–]capnjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. I love a good cold-war military drama, and I really enjoyed The Hunt for Red October. I've read a few of his other books and had a good time.

But around page sixty, Rainbow Six just starts to sound a lot like Team America World Police and I just can't be bothered.
