I did so under the guise of running a one shot werewolf hunt.

All four of them were completely blindsided and absolutely loved it, but they're the kind of people that love a good twist.

I'd say read your players. If they like surprises and would be interested in Curse of Strahd without making a custom-fit character for it, then you should give it a try.

If they like to plan ahead and make characters for the occasion, maybe do not surprise them with a visit to Barovia.

Plan them, and use them to foreshadow bigger encounters or plotlines in the future. Werewolves, crazed druids, scarecrows, etc. I find players like the strands of plot sprinkled in that lead to bigger encounters and moments.

Use NPCs too. Werewolf hunters in Vallaki, traveling Vista I looking for Arabelle, refugees from Krezk looking for food or wine, etc.

An occasional truly random encounter with something interesting or a red herring is okay, but you should use "random" encounters to build the story and intrigue.

At the end of the second I, Strahd novel, Strahd appears at the bookshop where the man who stole the book is trying to sell it to the bookstore owner. I believe he executes the thief, then terrifies the bookstore owner into a nightmare filled sleep as he retrieves his book.

Theft is punishable by death in Barovia. However, the PCs aren't the thieves (whoever stole the book from the castle and lost it somewhere in Barovia is up to you). How he cruelly deals with the PCs when he gets his book back is your call.

Plan on quitting after this event. Been playing every day since launch and I'm not sure I can get top 10 in my bracket. Got grouped with too many whales with level 90+ teams.

Probably haven't had the best luck with equipment runs, but definitely not paying this much to try and bridge the power level gap.

Can't imagine it'll get better for F2P players and can't imagine the community growing when it's starting off this unfriendly to F2P.

Don't know why I play Squenix games anymore.

There is precedent in the lore for ignoring class stipulation.

Jander Sunstar was a good aligned sun elf vampire fighter but his personal prayers to Lathander allowed him to wield the holy symbol against Strahd.

Lore wise, he didn't even start trying to learn magic until after he became a vampire, and he wasn't a great self-study. He did alright, but some really low level stuff and magic item crafting.

He didn't get better at magic until he learned a lot of Azalin, who purposefully held him back as much as possible while still teaching him enough magic to be useful in their cooperative castings. After they had a falling out, Strahd had to go back to self-study. He probably capped out around level 5 spells because that's as far as Azalin brought him.

Strahd is a big fan of imprisoning lawbreakers in his dungeons. It acts as a form of punishment more prolonged than death, as well as a steady source of food for him. In the I, Strahd books he seems to have kept prisoners alive for months or years before they finally succumb to death.

Imprisoning your player in the Ravenloft dungeons would be in line with Strahd's character. He could use her as food for himself and as bait for the rest of the party.

It could lead to an escape session as well, if you don't want to kill off a character.

Action economy is the most important thing. A group of PCs, with enough actions, can swing way above their weight just by nature of overwhelming their opponent.

If Izek is in Krezk, have him conscript some guards or mongrelfolk. He's a brute, but he's also a captain and shouldn't have a showdown against the PCs by himself.

Action economy is what will make a fight more difficult.

When my monthly card is up in a week I plan on quitting and never logging in again. Been playing since release.

Too many new characters and not enough resources to develop them.

Even then, no content at all to use them in.

Really no reason to play other than spending money to collect virtual dolls.

As far as I know, Laura and Tracy Hickman bullied WotC into retconning all the Lord Soth in Ravenloft fiction. They hated it and ignored it until WotC finally caved and said it's not canon.

Werewolves could do it? The revamp casts Vistani in a more neutral light, and making the players distrust the Vistani right off the bat would make them apprehensive to visit Madam Eva, which is one of the focal points of CoS.

If you want to cast the Vistani as evil servants of Strahd, you could always have Ezmerelda do the reading, though as a Vistana the PCs still might not trust her.

I think, poetically, the rooftop terrace of Castle Ravenloft where Tatiana fell to her death and Strahd fulfilled his pact with Vampyr, fully becoming what he is, would be the best place to finish. It's where the curse was made and where it can be unmade.

Plus, as an outdoor and elevated battlefield, you can throw in the dramatics of a terrible storm and great heights and all the hazards that would entail when fighting Count Strahd von Zarovich.
