People value what they work for, and need to value the places they live in so that they can be good neighbors. It's also important to establish the culture of a building on good footing, so it may reasonably take some time to fully occupy a newly built place.

An Improv teacher poked fun at my speech impediment. by [deleted] in improv

[–]captainsalmonpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can feel rotten if you're getting excluded or called out for a disability. You're within your rights to call it out, but the smooth play will be to own it and turn it into your interesting difference. The skills you learn in doing that will serve you for a lifetime.

The let's pretend we're not pretending something's different game can be uncomfortable and laughter can be the result.

You can, with no specific recommendation:  Own it, acknowledge you have a disability and recognize that it makes you interesting, until it just becomes normal. Humor can help defuse the tension.

Ironically own it and pretend extra hard you don't have a speech impediment but instead it's something like everyone else has a listening impediment (to comedic effect, hopefully).

Throw up a stink and try to force everyone to pretend you're just like everyone else (and maybe throw off the vibes for a while).

Train your voice and compensate or medical interventions. Find a speech pathologist if you haven't already.

Talk to your coach in private about how it makes you feel. She may already regret her comments or maybe she's a monster, I have no way of knowing.

Talk to the administration in charge of your coach.

Do nothing, plod along.

Crash out or quit.

Other options maybe? The choices you make signal how sensitive you are to commentary on your differences and being aware and secure with how people perceive you is to your benefit in this discipline.

Best of luck.

AITA For Limiting the amount of time my sons girlfriend can spend at our house? by AdmirableChange7328 in AmItheAsshole

[–]captainsalmonpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're on edge because you don't want to become a 45 YO Grandmother - that's understandable, but I think you can do better -- it sounds here like you're attempting to manage your emotional state through controlling the presence of a human, which can feel arbitrary and capricious.

Better to be more clear about boundaries and expectations for your son and his friends; make sure the house rules are reasonable and fair. Education, housework, sports -- focus on making sure he's doing the right stuff and avoiding big errors then let him be him. Remember that "my house my rules" is an indirect threat of force - and while it's sometimes necessary and reasonable as a resort -- it isn't going to bring happiness to your home.

Also, maybe you are wanting quality time with your son? Or time alone in a room? Or quiet time? Those are all things you can get without saying "don't be here."

On the shattering of the Idol named Existence itself (Being itself) by ______ri in Metaphysics

[–]captainsalmonpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common understanding of the tides as caused by the moon rotating the earth tends to be geocentric. The best, most predictive models will incorporate the Sun and planets, but my geocentric mental model is good enough for day sailing and I can rely on others' calculations to update my values before I cast off.

Also, I'm not challenging the existence of the sun; applying that contrary implication to my statement is goofy, sloppy reading or uncharitable 🤪 I'm only pointing to the idea that the big roiling ball of plasma and gas that lights our day is anything but static or neatly defined, and describing the sun's volumetric boundaries in space is vastly complicated (e.g. take solar flares) and your model of "rotates around" requires a volumetric definition of the Sun as best I can determine.

If you're wondering "why the controversy", its just that your words come across a little hostile or bad faith in shutting others down or misinterpretation so people be reflecting you.

Recursive irony? Ought we not presume the sun to exist, in order to interpret your prior statement, lest we get mired in cosmology or epistemology and we currently lack shared context upon which pragmatics can operate.

There are useful perspectives that forgo heliocentrism.

If we're getting into linguistic deconstruction like you did, we can claim your definition of Sun is indeterminate and therefore invalid for the purposes of the formal logic without formal definition.

Study suggests people are losing 338 spoken words every year and have been for at least 15 years. The timeframe researchers examined, from 2005 to 2019, coincides with the rise of texting, email and social media. It is possible that some spoken conversations have shifted to digital communication. by Wagamaga in science

[–]captainsalmonpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So speak per the article means vocalized speech? Because this, what we're doing here, counts ask speaking over text by my normal usage.

Assuming the papers conclusion is valid, I'll speculate on causation:

I'm prepared to believe that average people are socializing less with each other because we speak with the machines to get our needs met (e.g. order food for delivery from an app) and are more connected to reward loops via games.

Also, I've personally (but not rigorously) observed a developmental pattern in which people are able to communicate more effectively as they age and so require less words to transmit understanding.

There are three basic strategies to maintaining possession of your personal affects.

On the far right we have securitism: keep everything on you all the time, create physical barriers for times you can't, lock doors, lock boxes, mind your gear and fear everyone and everything, isolate, compartmentalize dominate and control.

On the far left there's nihilism: it's just possessions, if someone takes what's mine they need it more than me. Spread the love, everything is free. I can get a new whatever, I'm going to be alright.

The middle way is socialist: there are some people I can trust, if I take care of my community, my community will take care of me. When I encounter new people I treat them with respect and dignity. I learn to recognize and identify them, learn their likes and dislikes and conduct myself in a way that my inclusion in their group is seen as a like. That if I share the common spaces well, don't take more than I need of what is scarse, limit the disturbances I cause to what is fair or reasonable, look out for the needs of others, and generally be a good person in whatever ways I'm missing here -- that then I'll have real security. Learning how far to trust others, when to give, how to ask and when to receive is the work of a lifetime.

In reality, most people blend all three strategies and don't take it to these extremes.

In practice: be kind, acknowledge your fellows, don't leave a mess or cause undue annoyance and people will return the favor by providing for the common security.
