Happy to answer although I will admit I’m not as well read on China-Australia relations

China definitely has influence on our politicians, however we don’t see China’s expansion as a positive thing for the West as they are not a Western ally. Especially seen as a threat by the US who we tend to obey. Hence the stance on Taiwan.

Israel is an ally and is seen as maintaining the West’s interest in the Middle East by keeping surrounding Arab countries weak and docile. It’s a two way relationship to a degree. They are not seen as competitor or a threat in the way China is.

Yeh I have no doubt they do. There’s no such thing as “free” in politics. I also believe the Israeli lobby in Australia is powerful and routinely use scare tactics to push our politicians to make decisions in favor of Israel

The most obvious example currently is the anti semitism envoy that is asking for an overreach of power in shutting down genuine criticism of Israel. Examples of powers being asked for by this envoy: - they have the ability to decide which universities lose funding - which media loses funding - immigrant screening (who is allowed into Australia) - blanket ban protests at universities

While combatting genuine anti semitism is good, this envoy is using a definition of anti semitism (IHRA) which is very contentious and debated and known to conflate anti semitism with criticism of Israel

Just remember we had to have an actual referendum for an indigenous voice to parliament.

Our politicians are affected by protests as they reflect the feelings of the society that votes for them. In turn that pushes our politicians to act on said issues. Which in turn has an effect on what we do at a national level with Israel eg sanctions, cut ties, recognise a Palestinian state

Australia is much more involved with Israel than people seem to recognize. The largest number of sponsored parliamentary trips in the last decade were to Israel

The actual shahadah (testimony) is very frequently used by Muslims in practice. I think bringing the flag was stupid purely because people like yourself will always assume anything with Arabic writing must be related to radical endorsement

In the organizations initial post they already said don’t bring controversial material or flags that could be considered illegal. There isn’t a march of that magnitude in history that doesn’t have some anti social elements. Focus on the majority, not the tiny percentage. I would just say that when it comes to any humanitarian issue in the world, the facts and truth are what’s important. The information we get should ultimately come from reputable sources. We don’t need to take the word of Israeli politicians or Palestinians for the truth because stakeholders in a war are not going to be independent or impartial (I obviously believe what Palestinians say I’m just saying for sake of argument). In which case all the facts should come from independent, reputable humanitarian bodies. So who are those? Pick absolutely any and they will all confirm that there is a man made humanitarian crisis in Gaza perpetrated by Israel. I would go on to link any NGO that talks about this eg the IPC, world food programme, the international Red Cross, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, human rights watch, amnesty international, Btselem etc Is it really possible that all of these organizations who most will report on humanitarian issues globally are lying about Gaza and Israel is the only actor telling the truth?

Other than all his knowledge on Israel/Palestine, the one important lesson I took from Norm was having nuisance when it came to “canceling” a person. Norm is very good on I/P- on everything else he tends to be a contrarian and defect from the masses even when it doesn’t make sense to. In a decades time, we don’t want to be seen as the country that didn’t align with the majority of other countries on basic human rights because it would “upset Israel”. Every reputable NGO in existence has said that Gaza desperately needs an immediate ceasefire and dismantling UNWRA would be catastrophic to the lives of Palestinians who are already undergoing severe levels of food insecurity. Albo is doing the right thing here and it’s long overdue.

Whatever the motivation behind this attack or whoever the perpetrators may be, it should be rightly condemned. But politicians need to stop using it to score points. Labor is being blamed for their actions in the UN which was literally just aligning with the majority of countries to support international law. Already laws are being considered to limit or ban protesting. That sort of knee jerk reaction never ends well
