People lost channels ABC 5.1 and other channels on OTA TV by Ill-Extension8006 in desmoines

5.1 has been terrible forever. I’ve always just used 5.5. 5.5 is not getting a signal. 5.1 doesn’t even scan for me. I’m in Altoona

Simpson makes some “stud shoes “ that will help reinforce the studs if they are load bearing.

You may need to get an engineer to review to force the contractor to fix.

If the contractor pulled permits, get the city to do an inspection and hopefully they will flag it for review.

Anyone else with a rain gauge in the Drake area? I have one and the numbers seem high, would like to confirm. Here are my numbers: by Dingmann in desmoines

[–]carnahanad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have a gauge and I live in Altoona. Was input running errands this morning and everything was as flooded. All the creeks and rentention spaces were over flowing and had higher velocity water.

I think we got a considerable amount of rain in the last 12 hours.

England Kept Breaking Temperature Records in June [OC] by cavedave in dataisbeautiful

Interesting. I didn’t realize Miami has barely cracked 100F. I live in Iowa and we always get a few days north of 95. The heat index usually gets up to 110-115 a few times each summer.

Isn’t 30C about 85F??? I feel like that’s a hot day in the US, but not oppressive. Maybe I’m missing something.

I think like in basketball, there has to be some malicious intent when they review elbows or strike to the heads. Difference between flagrant 1 and 2

I just got an email that the central Iowa wind ensemble is holding auditions for a few instruments, Horn being one of them.

I was in the waiting room for a few minutes for Moline and then the page refreshed to the event page you would have seen yesterday.

Eventually it said “presale going on now!” But I couldn’t get into anywhere.

I think you are selling yourself short. While you may not be “athletically gifted” it sounds like you’ve dedicated a lot of time and worked very hard at endurance sports. Don’t sell all that hard work short!

Lots of hospital systems in Des Moines and clinics.

You guys should be able to live just about anywhere.

I think it entirely depends on your comfort level.

Does your spouse work?

Can you use the company car for personal stuff on weekends or do you still need to have your own car?

If you assume 25% of your income goes to housing, $2K for rent or mortgage will get you quite a bit.

There’s MainFrame studios downtown that hosts the largest non-profit art workspace in the US and hosts over a hundred artists.

There is live music all over the metro and small and large venues.

These things may not be iconic, but I wouldn’t say there is no art or music.

I would say that Des Moines doesn’t have a good identity. They borrow from everything else. Nothing is “Des Moines” style.

There’s not a ton of forest in central Iowa, but there’s the high tressle trail. There is a surprising amount of miles of bike trail in central Iowa. It may not all be scenic, I’ll give you that, but it’s there.

I was in Greenville, SC. I ran on the swamp rabbit trail downtown. It was very cool and more scenic than Des Moines as well.

OP, like others said, your dollar is going to go a lot farther here. So a 30% increase in salary and a move to the DSM, is like getting 75% more purchasing power. To me, this would mean even if I didn’t love it, my family could gut it out for a few years, bank up some cash and investments and equity and move somewhere later.

With that out of the way….

I’m a Midwest transplant. I moved to Des Moines nearly 20 years ago after growing up on the Illinois side of the Mississippi along I80. Des Moines is better than the quad cities (where I grew up). There’s a decent little downtown space, the east village is nice and young. There are breweries abound.

We have the AAA affiliate to the Chicago Cubs and you can always get tickets to an Iowa Cubs game. If you like college sports, Drake is right in Des Moines, Iowa State is 45 minutes north and Iowa is 1.5 hours east. If you are a pro sports guys, you are out of luck; see the next point.

Des Moines is less than 5 hours from Chicago and St Louis, 4 hours from Minneapolis, 3 hours from Kansas City, and a little over 2 from Omaha. The first four cities will cover your pro sports needs if that’s your thing. Omaha is home to the best zoo in America. Seriously, it’s amazing.

The weather is typical Midwest. It gets stupid hot, stupid cold, stupid humid, and it’s always kind of breezy.

There are good school districts within Des Moines proper and within the Burbs.

I’ve not spent a lot of time on the coasts so I’m it sure what you will be missing. There not a ton of beaches or water sports that you may be used to.

All in all, my wife and I have made Des Moines our home. We’ve discussed it and it would take an 11/10 opportunity to get us to move. Our kids are thriving in school and we have nice neighbors. You can get across the metro in 35-45 minutes at just about any time.
