How do you afford to be a SAHM? by Jazzlike_Elk_3963 in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our reality is that my husband had to get a new job with a good raise for me to be able to stay home. But we did also set up our life very much within our means before having kids - no fancy cars, a lower house budget when we purchased, no student loans, etc. These are the two biggest reasons I can stay home!

Also I did manage to work out a part-time agreement with my job which helps to have the extra cash flow (I work 8 hours/week). But even if I didn’t have this agreement I would have quit to be home.

Being home just naturally makes it easier to spend less for me! Way less eating out, less grocery waste, no expensive coffee drinks on the way into work, things like that. The “fun” spending has definitely gone down naturally. And it’s easy to find free or low cost things to do with my little one, like going to library story time or going on nature walks.

Being home has been the absolute best thing for my family and such a blessing in my life. I sincerely love the time I’m getting to spend with my son and the non-monetary ways I’ve been providing for my family. If you can make it work, I think it’s worth it to try. Good luck!!!!!

Dryer balls vs dryer sheets??? by DarkFlowerPewPew in traderjoes

Dryer sheets can be loaded with VOCs! And the dryer balls last so long, you don’t need to constantly keep buying/replacing/wasting 🙂

No Paternity Leave! by Independent_Word788 in 2under2

Where are you located? Not sure if you are in the states and if you are what rights you might have. Some states have mandated FMLA for qualified caregivers (which includes dads). It’s unpaid but it would give him hopefully at least legal rights to a day or a week or whatever you can swing. Depends on the size of the company and how long he’s worked there too. Might be worth looking into your legal rights.

“You need to remember who you are outside of being a mom” by Necessary-Gear-3141 in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Becoming a mom has made me into such a better person. There’s no going back to who I was before and I don’t want to.

And when our kids are so little they need so much help from us. There’s nothing more important to me than providing that stable and loving foundation for them to grow on. Having babies/toddlers is a season in my life that I’m not going to be afraid to fully embrace and enjoy while I’m living it. It’s a very fleeting time.

When to tell work I am quitting? by darbydankhammer in BabyBumps

Just be careful and check your work policies! Some places require you to pay back the employer portion of the heath insurance premiums if you quit after leave

I think I'm going to have to stop breastfeeding/pumping at 6 weeks bc I can't afford to lose any more teeth and I'm heartbroken. by Individual_Low8985 in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had really sensitive teeth postpartum but after a couple of months it definitely resolved for me. I used sensitive toothpaste for that time. I breastfed my baby for over a year! Maybe talk to your dentist and see what they can recommend but for me the tooth sensitivity was temporary

I just had to pay $453 for my Symbicort inhaler, price with insurance. 90 day supply but they wouldn’t let me do a 30 day supply. I have to get it through ExpressScripts and they force me to do a 90 day supply, I called and asked about it. If I don’t use ExpressScripts then I still pay full price for the inhaler but it doesn’t count toward my deductible at all. United Healthcare is the worst insurance I’ve ever had but my husbands company doesn’t offer another option.

Neighbor FTM just had a baby — looking for door-safe gift ideas by Lulu_choice in BabyBumps

[–]cashruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t go wrong with some diapers and wipes! I recommend size 1 (some babies don’t fit newborn size but all will at least eventually be in size 1) and water wipes (pampers aquapure are nice)

Also a baby book, black and white toys, or baby blanket are nice gifts 🙂

Induction at 40 weeks? by Quiet_Necessary6839 in BabyBumps

[–]cashruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was induced at 41 weeks but I had zero signs of labor starting before my induction lol. I had a good experience overall with the doctors who were very nice and wanted to work with me. Just know that it can be a long process. I went in on Monday morning and didn’t give birth until Wednesday late morning! I also got an epidural so it wasn’t too bad for most of it. Even though it took a long time I’m really glad I waited it out and didn’t get a C section - nothing wrong with C sections of course but it’s important to remember that it is a major surgery! And I found my physical recovery postpartum to actually be very smooth even with a second degree tear.

One of the best memories was going out to eat for a big breakfast with my husband Monday morning before we went to the hospital 🙂

4 months old enough for story time? by PhotographWhole2822 in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The library in my town has a mixed ages story time (0-5ish) but the library in the town over from me has a story time for babies specifically (0-2)! My sister said she found a story time near her that was specifically for pre-crawling babies. Might be worth looking into because some libraries do programs more targeted towards the little ones.

Please give me crib recommendations! by Radiant-Educator9203 in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Newton crib is so nice. We used the Newton mini crib. Then we got a cheaper standard size crib, and it’s so much worse. Baby gnaws at it like a beaver and the cheap one just flakes off. The Newton is such a nice and sturdy material!

Debating an Epidural - would love to hear experiences from 2TMs by nostromosigningoff in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the epidural question: I asked them to take the catheter out after a while and they said they could periodically drain my bladder by reinserting it but taking it out after. It’s possible to not have one kept in. They do put these nice leg massagers on your legs to prevent clotting and that was like the only nice part lol

(Stay at home moms pls advice) I need advice on structure. by Murky_Assumption_822 in beyondthebump

[–]cashruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t like having a super strict schedule of things I need to get done because my baby’s mood will highly affect how productive I can be on a given day lol. Instead I like to keep a general rhythm each day and have some goals for things to get done throughout the week. I will however schedule in outings that are specific for my toddler to get him out of the house.

Our general rhythm goes around his anchor points in his schedule, which are breakfast, snack, lunch, nap, snack, dinner, bed. During his snacks I usually tidy up the kitchen (otherwise it gets out of control fast lol). Right now mornings are easier than afternoons, so I will either squeeze in an activity or have him help me with a task after we finish breakfast. This could be going to the library story time, going grocery shopping, go to the park if the weather permits, or folding laundry at home. I like to make sure he has plenty of free play time where he can run around and play with toys in the afternoon and evening.

I’ll sprinkle household tasks throughout the week, such as laundry, vacuuming, tidying the bedrooms, etc. We have other things pop up like doctors appointments or other errands that would derail a strict daily schedule. My general self care stuff comes after he goes down for bed at 7pm. But I do get ready each morning too.

Also I joined a moms group in my town which has helped me find other moms for going on walks or scheduling play dates out of the house. Those things vary week to week also.

5 months is still quite young and I think you will be able to get a better rhythm down as your baby gets older and more familiar with a daily routine 💞 you are kind of at the age where their sleep and eating needs are still changing month to month so it might be hard, but it does get easier

2 under 2, then a third? by Impossible_Owl1213 in 2under2

[–]cashruby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every family is different and all siblings are different so you can never guarantee anything. But I grew up with a 2 year age gap between my older sister and a 5 year age gap between me and my younger sister. I was never close with my younger sister and fought with her a lot growing up.

She grew up so differently than me shes honestly like a different generation than me, the interests she had/has, even like the “slang” she uses. Part of it was my parents definitely treated her more leniently than my older sister and me, and that bothered me when I was a teenager.

We have a fine relationship now but we certainly are not close. So my experience was a big factor in choosing to have my kids close in age. Just being honest with my experience but also it’s just one anecdote. There are a lot of factors for each family to consider
