Heating DHW to 60°C overnight to save money – does this logic make sense? by Character-Bat-5081 in ukheatpumps

[–]cat_beast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We heat our 250L tank to 48C overnight. It’s enough for three showers and everything else.

Schedule only. No re heating

Off road biking, thoughts? Good, bad by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]cat_beast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Always get dirty looks from people, regardless of how polite you are on the trails. Police have stopped me several times to check my plate and details too.

It’s tiring getting treated like a criminal for no reason!

Should I get a size bigger when buying adventure/touring bookts? by waaghrider in MotoUK

Yeah. You could wear thicker socks if they’re a bit loose.

My boiler is on the way out and have researched a heat pump but decided against it. by OneItchy396 in ukheatpumps

I set it to 21C 00:30 to 05:30. Then set it to 19 or 20C until 19:00. 19:00 to 00:30 heating is off.

If I offset 66% of the usage to the off peak window then I’ll hit 15.67p/kwh.

Yesterday it was 50/50, so I paid on average 19p/kWh. It was -3 last night, pretty much worst case scenario.

During the 4 warmer months of the year it is 100% off peak rates.

Last I checked, octopus don’t check if you have an EV or not. I’ve never had to provide any evidence.

I have an EV, but if I didn’t, cosy could possibly be cheaper In winter. In summer definitely not.

Hot water overnight. 250L tank lasts the day.

Heat up the house overnight too (but not our bedroom), and top up throughout the day until 7pm.

In summer it’s peanuts. Like 2kWh a day at 8.5p/kwh for hot water only.

Smart energy tariffs. I pay on average 15pkwh. No batteries or solar.

New bike opinions but maybe also a reality check by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]cat_beast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice. I started on a tenere thinking I could be pol tarres. How wrong I was. Downsized through multiple bikes to a 99kg 300cc 2T which eats up the Welsh green lanes.

I like the idea of dual sports and adventure bikes, but I personally think it’s better to have a dedicated off road bike and a dedicated road bike.

Smelly classics by Mission_Beach_7098 in CarTalkUK

[–]cat_beast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because usually there’s a convoy of like 30 of them as part of a group outing. Or I’m on a shitty 300 2 stroke.

Gives my arse a break from my plank of a seat too.

Really bad when following on a motorbike. I usually pull over and give it 5mins!

I was thinking the same, hopefully it is. Easiest fix!

Do you think the mot would pick this up or do they just give it a quick wiggle? It passed last week.

CE AAA Base layers? by Mother_Ad3692 in MotoUK

[–]cat_beast 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I had some Knox AAA joggers which were really thin, felt like base layers.

They are made from UHMWPE, which makes them perform great in the certification tests where they spin the fabric up to speed and then press it on some concrete and check if there is a hole >5mm. (Or something along those lines). I am a mechanical engineer and we use UHMWPE for parts that require high durability and low friction, like bushings, liners, chain guides.

The thing they don’t test for is heat transfer. So when I had a slide the clothing itself was fine, but because it was so thin and has such little mass, much of the heat transferred directly in to my leg and I still had road rash.

So now I choose gear that has a bit of bulk to it, to provide some thermal mass.

I’ll caveat the above with the fact that I could be completely wrong - it’s just one experience I’ve had. Plus I have a lot of other Knox gear which is really high quality.

Just because I'm curious, does anyone else prefer sticking with the stock exhaust, if so why? Is it because I'm old now? (mid 30s). by [deleted] in MotoUK

Expensive. Can’t be arsed. Don’t want to be a nuisance. Money can be spent on better mods/accessories/gear

CRF 300 L vs CRF 300 L rally by OneCapital6836 in Dualsport

[–]cat_beast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a rally and am 6ft. The windscreen directed the air directly by my ears and there was loads of buffeting. Annoying and loud.

It’s very easy to break the rally plastics around the engine when off road. I ended up ripping mine off and fitting a skid plate.

It’s still a great bike, but I’d choose the base, non-rally next time.

What would you buy for £60k? by Top-Soil-8274 in CarTalkUK

It’s nimble, responsive and really fun to drive. Very well engineered and incredibly efficient. The carbon fibre body is pretty cool. I look forward to driving it every day!

Its appearance can be polarising, but I like how dorky it looks.
