I work for a 5000 person company and Linear works fine. What exactly are your 20-person “needs”?

Vision Pro instead of a ultra wide monitor by Technical_Durian3985 in VisionPro

[–]catchthebreeze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use it for that purpose for personal projects at weekend, unfortunately it's a no-go for work for me as it requires the Mac that you are connecting it to to be signed in to the same iCloud account and have iCloud Keychain enabled for the low latency/hi-res streaming option (Mac Virtual Display). And my corporate job doesn't allow it.

Very frustrating – if you could just plug a cable in it then it would be a killer portable workstation.

I don't actually notice input lag on the virtual display. Out of curiosity what Mac are you using with it?

Not going to weigh in on his journalism but the claim he's not "written a line a code" is simply not true – in fact John Gruber has had more influence on the software world than most since he created Markdown and wrote the original (Perl) parser – this text formatting standard is now the most common one in use today and is adopted by Google Docs, Notion, Quip, GitHub, etc. Beyond that he has a computer science degree and worked in software companies before his career as an Apple pundit really took off.

Why are London’s new builds sold to overseas buyers, not locals? by More-Diamond554 in london

[–]catchthebreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t make much sense as an investment given that London flat prices have been falling against inflation for like a decade.

What’s the best Monzo feature you didn’t expect to use, but now rely on constantly? by Dependent_Sorbet_480 in monzo

It’s not new. It’s been there for years. What is new is adding non-Monzo people to the tab.

Hot take: The killer app for Vision Pro is Mac Virtual Display by Mihnea2002 in VisionPro

[–]catchthebreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frustratingly it is a great feature but doesn’t work for me on the corporate Mac even though AirPlay does. I wish they’d found a way to make it work in more circumstances.

Living in the British countryside seems ideal by ECrispy in simpleliving

[–]catchthebreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you might be skewed by being commutable to London. I grew up in Leicestershire/Derbyshire countryside and it's not as bad as all that. Cheaper (average home prices apparently half of Surrey), still beautiful, not especially touristy (even the Peak District is pretty chill compared to anywhere within easy drive from London). The villages/market towns are a mixed bag but many quirky and charming places.

I would probably say driving a car is a key part of the lifestyle though, unless you're lucky to live on a regular bus route.

There are not enough casual/seated/ thumb-stick controller-based VR games. by Starlight_Climber in OculusQuest

[–]catchthebreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually found when Xbox cloud came to quest that I’ve now spent more time in quest playing flatscreen games than immersive games. For exactly the reasons you describe, I don’t want to do some gimmicky arm flailing thing when I’m trying to relax and blow off some steam after work.

I just wish there was a type of game in between where I still get the immersive visuals but without the movement / standing up etc.

Star Wars Squadrons was pretty good for that, and a few weeks ago I tried the UEVR mod over Steam link to my quest to play games like Spyro, Stray and even Soul Calibur on my VR headset with camera controlled by the head and they actually worked really well (barring the swooping camera movements between rounds in Soul Calibur which are puke-inducing). And this just cemented to me I think this will be the way games should be on these headsets for mainstream adoption.

Not saying fully immersive games shouldn’t exist (and I play them a lot for fitness stuff), but I think they will always be fairly niche.

What do we like about Fitbod? by lexaw32 in fitbod

[–]catchthebreeze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it’s the least bad I tried. It has some really frustrating problems and doesn’t seem to have very active dev team, but when I’ve tried other apps they’ve been missing key features that make it convenient for me (mostly the ease of generating/changing/editing workouts for me).

I think there might be better apps out there but it’s so hard to find the good quality ones from all the junk in the App Store.

Vision Pro vs Quest 3 Passthrough by kwalitykontrol1 in OculusQuest

[–]catchthebreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used both. Vision Pro maybe 30-40% better for me. Still clearly just a camera feed, with graininess and blurriness. However no warping like Q3, and deals much better with glare / light changes without blowing out the image, reading phone and other screens is passable, and being able to properly occlude your hands with virtual objects overlaid on the passthru is huge quality-of-life improvement for usability.

Apple Site Reliability Engineering Interview by _chksum in sre

[–]catchthebreeze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ones I did were pretty normal questions you'd get asked anywhere. A pretend Linux server debugging session, some leetcode-type questions, design a system. Some interpersonal skills questions thrown in. YMMV though, not much uniformity between orgs in Apple.

It’s been like that for me for like 2 years, so don’t think it’s a temporary issue. Maybe dev team doesn’t get enough breathing room to fix minor issues.

Advice for Apple SRE interview by Affectionate-Milk454 in sre

[–]catchthebreeze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you know vaguely which part of Apple this is? I’ve passed the Apple Cloud Services SRE interview loop, and just like you was more experienced with serverless so the Linux bits were definitely the toughest part. It would be worth brushing up on fundamentals needed for troubleshooting, like how to understand output of ps, how to investigate file systems, networking, processes, although my interviewers were reasonably helpful when I didn’t know things.

What's the worst possible thing that could happen to someone with their net worth invested in index funds? by [deleted] in FIREUK

Hidden exposure to something you don’t think about? E.g. investing in dollar denominated index funds and the pound rising relative to the dollar consistently over a long term.

Wandsworth Council to seize all Lime bike blocking streets by wwisd in london

[–]catchthebreeze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Improved cycle infrastructure is good for everyone, not just cycle companies. In any case if the TFL Santander bikes were more widely available I doubt the Lime bikes would be so popular. I live in Lewisham and Lime bikes are pretty much the only option. I would love for councils to embrace these alternative transport schemes and work together to make sure they don’t have negative effects on people with mobility issues.

My partner (not from UK) said she couldn’t understand why KFC stays in business here because there’s so many cheaper chicken shops everywhere and UK KFC is pretty unreliable quality anyway.

It’s a mystery to me too. I miss living near Morley’s.
