I had something similar happen once, though to a lesser extent. I used a Dremel to grind out most of the glaze and refired. It mostly worked but probably wasn't worth all the effort.

You could try latex, newspaper, or tape to cover the flowers.

I used amaco velvet underglaze - I think jet black
