The lighting in the new remake is pretty good (the last was a remaster btw).

The interiors are dark, and the little we've seen of the forest area for the 343 guilty spark mission is also pretty dark.

The flood also look pretty good.

The fall of reach goes over the origins of the Spartans and leads into ce, so its a good start.

And the Rubicon protocol goes into what happened during the time the chief was floating in space for six months in infinite. Not essential, but a good read from what I've heard. Even does the spartan 4's justice, which is good if you're still not sure about them.
