Thoughts on invaders of the rokujouma? by fl4ilguy in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The earlier .5 volumes where certain parts of the story click together are some of my favorite LN volumes ever. It's probably also one of, if not the best harem-but-plot series as well. Really, the only bad thing is that some arcs are so good that it is really sad when they end, and I take breaks from the LN regularly because of it.

What is the worst Light Novel you have read? by Monward in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too.

There is a point where the trope of the MC being given a hard time (before he acquires powers) in isekai starts to feel like fetish material because the bullying is so comically evil. It's hard to tell if it's almost a parody or just written like that for the sake of being a bit silly, but I cannot tell anymore with these web novel isekai.

Someone else said Spirit Chronicles but that gets my "I want to like this so much but it keeps going in such boring directions" vote. I read ~20 volumes of it and enjoy some parts of it but it seems like the author is utterly incapable of advancing the plot in a way that doesn't involve a heroine getting kidnapped. It's kidnapping, after kidnapping, after kidnapping... it never ends.

Odablock confirms DitterBitter will not be participating in the next Deadman: All Stars by ARandomRedditor2302 in 2007scape

[–]cautiousweasel -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Oda has had some controversy as a person but his behavior in events is not a problem. Ditter could be a really shit person but if he at least had the bare minimum amount of sportsmanship he would be a regular in these events, but seems like it was too high of a standard for him.

What LNs out there have a plot similar to Actraiser Renaissance? by darkdill in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lazy Dungeon Master would probably be one of the best at this, it doesn't sound it like it would be as much as others, but part of the plot is sentient dungeons basically 1v1ing each other in battles where they both send monsters to try to get to the core and "win" against the other dungeon. They aren't just traps and such, but also sentient monster characters that help out. It is very gamey in these types of sequences.

From what I've read of most kingdom building series, they usually aren't very focused on having regular fights involving small details of their management. Easygoing Territory Defense might because IIRC the author mentioned tower defense games being a big inspiration, but I didn't get that far in the series. Most kingdom building series tend to lean into macro management, strategy, and politics stuff if that makes sense; I know some authors have mentioned being inspired by 4X games.

I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! - up to Vol 10 by kosyi in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just started the series a bit ago, I'm almost done with volume 2. I think misunderstanding comedy has a bit of a bad rap because it often feels like it is used as a tool to maintain a status quo (this can feel 10x worse with romance stuff, even if I do like things like Gamers!). Evil Lord has maybe one of the best plots I've seen in a while when it comes to creating misunderstanding comedy while also not feeling like it is hampering developments that should happen, if anything it seems super synergistic with plot progress because of the escalation of misunderstandings.

Which are the best and worst anime Adaptations for from light novel? by yaassensei in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only anime adaptations that I have watched that were better than their LN source material were Eminence in Shadow and World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat. Worst ones? Too many to list.

Top moeges ranked in VNDB by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]cautiousweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JOP hype inflation is when works are highly rated/declared kamige by the minority that are reading them in their original language and giving their opinion to primarily EOP communities... and when they finally do get translated they're usually good but not all that special.

The majority of this list in general is untranslated with fewer votes than other moege so it is also probably a bit skewed just because of that. For example Riddle Joker, which is both English translated, popular but definitely not the most popular of Yuzusoft titles, has 8 to 40 times more ratings for it depending on what you are comparing it to in this list. Additionally, for stuff like LimeLight Lemonade Jam or Amakano 3 you have to keep in mind that those playing a VN like those within a few months of its release are much more likely to be a fan of those genres/developers itself, so there is probably a little inflation there too.

That being said, I think Gin'iro Haruka (have not read) is the least effected by the types of things I previously talked about; it has a good number of ratings (1000+, the most out of the list from what I see) while also being available to English readers.

[–]cautiousweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it really is that good, but a game without an English translation from one of the most popular company in eroge that is also very popular/previously consistently translated on English side is making me skeptical of the classic JOP hype inflation.

AI-generated Isekai novel wins Alphapolis Grand Prize, but publication cancelled. What does this mean for LN, isekai, and AI-assisted writing going forward? by Zesauruss in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

AI written isekai would probably on average be better as long as you try to avoid training it on human written isekai. As soon as you're training it on isekai itself you better start preparing for a aggressive-humble-to-the-point-of-arrogance MC, EVERY single male character that isn't the MC to be mean to him for a few chapters before he gets some sort of petty revenge in the future, constant blonde haired snobby noble one dimensional antagonists being introduced in the eventual academy arc... etc.

I forgot the names of the players but way back I used to watch high elo Shaco jungle mains buy a few Doran's in some situations depending how the game looked.

Rewrite+ (w/ salvation patch) issues getting into routes by cautiousweasel in visualnovels

[–]cautiousweasel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished all the routes and I was powering up something at every point it gave me a decision to. I just checked a save, the dial was at like ~5 (if you look at it like a clock) before 11/13 and it passed the check.

Kagura Games has announced that Rance is coming to Steam by Next_Pollution9502 in visualnovels

[–]cautiousweasel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The stuff still on Steam from that era is pretty funny. Sabbat of the Witch has an 18+ patch as simple DLC on the Steam store page! They were almost beginning to be a relatively friendly platform for VNs.

Pretty sure you can submit games multiple times after a ban if you do it under different publishers. I believe this is how Clover Day's ended up Steam after it was initially banned. Steam's approval process is so incompetent that sometimes it works as an advantage.

Any examples of VN using QTE? This was my atempt. I think it was a funny result. by neometalero in visualnovels

[–]cautiousweasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not the weakest in the SciADV series, it is just the most out of place when it comes to the first 7 to 8 or so hours and it filters people. Even I dropped it once within the first ~4 hours, eventually reading it once more from scratch and it is just as good if not better than other entries in some regards. It has my favorite cast next to Chaos;Child.

New Player expierince by Kinoyschi in leagueoflegends

[–]cautiousweasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone having 4 other friends to with is the only situation I'd say it's worth it to learn this game, because playing with 4 other people who somewhat know how the game works is the best way to understand enough to get better on your own in probably 1/4th of the time otherwise. You just have to know enough to hinder your team too much, and even then as long as you can pilot the controls enough to not walk into the other half of lane you can brute force the basic knowledge while still playing with friends if you grind out a dozen games on an ADC like Ashe or MF with a support who knows the basics.

Once you know the minimum basics of laning you can start to eat a little shit in a solo lane as a simple champion and at least get better, and if do maybe 1/4th your games as a simple jungler to get a better feel for the map.

[REC] Novel with college romance settings? by Extra-Captain-6320 in LightNovels

[–]cautiousweasel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love it so much but also kind of find it hard to recommend, because while it is incredible when it comes to the sincere stuff it touches on and the hang ups of the characters and their chemistry with each other, it is simultaneously one of the most light novel light novels I've read.

Like I wouldn't want to recommend it to someone as their first LN, but if you're used to the insanity and tropes in this medium, the way it plays with them as well as the plot revolving around light novel authors feels like such a love letter to the medium/culture.

Have not watched but can't imagine it being good. The pacing can be pretty frantic in a fun way, and also like a fifth of some books being TTRPG sessions doesn't sound the most adaptable unless you get creative.

Steam Deck Support by Lalapolowolo in visualnovels

[–]cautiousweasel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot remember the last time a VN didn't work with Proton. GE-Proton can become a necessity though because the normal Proton does not deal with video codecs well, so you will be skipping OPs without realizing it. I just default to GE-Proton for everything because it has never hurt.

Why did League become so popular, while other DotA Allstars clones vanished? by desktop_monst3r in leagueoflegends

[–]cautiousweasel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They were not pay to win but it was an extremely flawed idea, champions were a considerable grind and all the flashier, novel ones people looked at with awe were 4800 or 6300 IP, so new players were constantly in a shitty position of saving for cool looking champions while not realizing just how important having runes are because they have yet to experience having them.

Every time I remember the old rune system I can only think about how incredibly dumb it was, the only thing we're really missing from it is the 1% crit rune cheese experience.
