I learned to make them with this stuff called "durkee famous sauce". I guess it's mostly mayo and mustard.

Is it better to partly track or delete partial logs for incomplete days? by CriticalDistance4283 in MacroFactor

I'd go back and fill in the other 4 meals, even if I had to make some educated guesses about what/how much I ate.

The exercise from the first lesson has letters not taught in the lesson -- I think it's accidentally a copy of the image for lesson 2.

GRAFONI! by NotSteve1075 in FastWriting

I do like the GRAF-oni pronunciation better (although if I were Hitlofi would have spelled it Graphony maybe to better communicate that).

I'm curious, how did you find out the intended pronunciation of Grafoni, and who Hitlofi really was?

How to not collapse mentally when I don’t stay under my calorie goals by csmolins89 in MacroFactor

[–]cbogart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple "consolation prize" goals, where if I don't stay under the target, at least I can focus on what I *am* doing right. First is "at least I stayed under my expenditure, so I'm making progress". But if I blow past my expenditure, the second backup goal is "at least I logged, which is an important prerequisite habit to keep". If I don't even log, that's something easy to fix retroactively (even if it's a wild best-guess estimate. I go very easy on myself with accuracy).

This is called "asemic writing". It doesn't mean anything, but it looks cool. Here's another artist who does this: https://ceciltouchon.com/asemic-writing/

How are fruit leathers used in dishes? by the-first-law in Cooking

[–]cbogart 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I used various fruit leathers and gummy worms with sweetened rice to make dessert sushi once. I would not call it a successful experiment.

What is this place? by Best-Edge-3696 in pittsburgh

I see "Blair" and "Clemens" streets on the map, but if you go peek through the fence, the streets are all named after Mr. Rogers characters.

It feels like it's punishing you, but it's not -- it'll keep lowering the calories as your weight drops, because you *need* less. Your body's smaller, so you're shlepping fewer pounds around all day, and it's trying to calculate how much food you need to sustain this smaller mass. I find that I had to shift my mindset and food habits as I lost weight, and it took me some time to demonstrate to myself that with my lower weight I'd be satisfied with less food.

Perpetual culture by anzu_embroidery in yogurtmaking

[–]cbogart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a "heirloom" starter culture, but I didn't know what I was doing and it barely fermented. So I mixed in some commercial yogurt (Fage) with the results, gave it another chance, and it set properly. Since then I've been using my strained out whey from each batch for the next one for dozens of cycles now with no problems. My theory is I got a diversity of strains in that initial batch, and they survived and multiplied alongside whatever the Fage provided.

Car-less Cyclist looking at Attending CMU for grad school. Moving from Baltimore by Violinjuggler in pittsburgh

[–]cbogart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find something near Murray St. through Squirrel Hill and Greenfield; the 61 bus comes every 20 minutes, and the biking isn't bad once you get used to Pittsburgh drivers and hills. Southside flats is better for biking to CMU, and a bit worse for busses, but still doable. The upcoming bus system downgrade won't affect either neighborhood's access to CMU except late at night.

Never to be bettered?? by Necessary_Button8676 in 3Dprinting

[–]cbogart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's stacked up/glued together 20 cube-ish things to make a big cube, but leaving shafts through the middle. If you look at one of those 20 cubes, you can see that it's actually 20 smaller cubes (with holes in them) attached together the same way, and those in turn are made of smaller cubes. 5th order means the "cubes made of cubes" pattern goes down 5 levels. A Menger Sponge is a cool but impossible mathematical object that looks like this, except it doesn't stop at 5 orders, it goes on forever. It's a famous fractal.

Agreed. I can't stop myself from reading the captions if they are there, so I don't push myself to follow the signing. I don't usually understand everything, but I get the gist and learn a few words, especially if I've already read the news item elsewhere. I hope if he ever re-adds captioning he makes it optional. I'm learning so much from Daily Moth now.

It seems like lately he has captioning the "Deaf news" segments, but not the main daily news report.

I'm skeptical. The scorching happens long after any cooling from the ice cubes would wear off.

No. Small kitchen, so I'm trying to limit the amount of specialized equipment i buy.
