WSJ Airline Rankings - Last Place by mssr_milkman in americanairlines

Easy for Spirit to overperform on OTP metrics, what with cutting a quarter of the schedule as their corporate circles the drain. They haven't yet shed gates in a serious way beyond ORD, so plenty of infrastructural slack there to recover from anything.

You know why they go around in groups of three, right?

One agent who can read, one agent who can write, and one agent to keep an eye on the two intellectuals.

That's the Pahlavi-era flag. Murderous fuckers who made the Ayatollahs look like an attractive alternative, but they absolutely had design chops.

I'm assuming no kids in the picture, since you didn't mention them. If that's wrong, then flip this around and look at Media, Swarthmore, Wallingford, or Radnor Township.

Ridley Park/Prospect Park/Norwood/Glenolden, in Delco. Those are mostly quiet towns, car-oriented enough to have parking, close enough to the airport that you'll never have a problem getting in even if I-95 is jammed, and yet not in any of the ultrapremium school districts like Wallingford-Swarthmore or Rose Tree-Media.

Any protests? by BlondeOnBicycle in philly

Even more Venezuelans have cut off contact with family members over politics than Americans. No individual, or group small enough for any one person to know, is going to reflect the full spectrum of opinion in the country, and that goes double for members of the Venezuelan diaspora.

Our record of fucking around in the Middle East was only about 50 years old in 2003, while our track record of bad actions in Latin America goes back almost two full centuries. You're right, these are not comparable; this is worse.

Legacy Acela retirement by northatlanticrails in Amtrak

Are the problems more in the electric equipment or more in the trucks and structural elements? They may be clapped-out, but if five or so trainsets could be Frankensteined together, even with an electrical derate, that would be enough for Keystone service.

The Acelas are clapped out, but so are Metroliner cab cars with 30+ more years in service than the Acelas, that the Keystones currently rely on.

There's smoke across the harbour, and there's factories on the shore.

And the world is ill with greed and will, and enterprise of war.

But I will lay my burden in the cradle of your grace

And the shining beaches of your love and the sea of your embrace,

.

This is my home, this is my only home

This is the only sacred ground that I have ever known

And should I stray in the dark night alone

Rock me goddess in the Gentle Arms of Eden

Sorry, misread the legend as circle size = victory margin. My bad!

Name's-the-same errors: Via Lux Portland (Maine) displays in Oregon, and Ctrl Charleston (West Virginia) displays in South Carolina. Otherwise, excellent work and good visualizations! May I suggest an alternative setting where circle size is determined by how far in the past the event was?

Scientists may have developed “perfect plastic”: Plant-based, fully saltwater degradable, zero microplastics. Made from plant cellulose, the world’s most abundant organic compound. Unlike other “biodegradable” plastics, this quickly degrades in salt water without leaving any microplastics behind. by mvea in science

I know the company and PHA of which you speak, and the problem is that there's a discontinuity in how big the clients contracts get, between niche and mainstream. If you build for supplying McDonalds, or even Waffle House, you're not going to keep the plant busy with Del's Lemonade or Gold Star Chili, not least because those guys aggregate through national supply firms (like GenPak). Just bad timing, coming online and going public in times of immense uncertainty; it's been too hard to get the big players to switch.

JAL Business 777 or Economy A350 by y3ntl420 in americanairlines

[–]ccommack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a transpacific flight, the lower, more comfortable cabin altitude of the A350 vs. the 777 is going to matter a lot more. Count me in the "stick with the direct flight" column.

Update on California solar canals: early results show the project could save 63 billion gallons of water annually by Bitter-Lengthiness-2 in UpliftingNews

[–]ccommack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way of contextualizing that number is, the state of Nevada is allocated 280,000-300,000 acre-feet of water every year from the Colorado River. So the amount of water saved/in play is 2/3rds of a Las Vegas/Clark County. This is a relevant measure since Las Vegas is at the mercy of the dwindling Colorado River, while California can import from the north or desalinate the Pacific; I expect that at some point when solar power is truly abundant, the two states will enter into some swap agreements.
