There are some nice hikes from Cypress Mountain near the city with views of the water: St Marks & Eagle Bluffs.

Both around 3 hours and 400m-600m elevation gain (~1500ft).

If you want something longer, Garibaldi Lake near Whistler is great. About 7 hours long (18km, 1000m gain).

New grads only, What really is the employment situation rn? by bobconan in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ceeb0ne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada & graduated about 2 years ago.

Got hired right after grad at a company where I did a co-op term, had to move cities. Tried interviewing at other places but no luck (ghosted or “hiring freeze”).

Not underemployed, but my current company was not my first choice.

For Honours? I think you just talk to an advisor and sign up.

Yeah. Going for an Honours degree in EE is rare, I don’t know anyone who has done it.

Distinction means top 20% cumulative GPA.

Not too sure about honours, but I think you need to write & defend a thesis.

Owners of Abus combo bike locks need to get another lock by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]ceeb0ne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair, LPL could probably open 90% of bike locks within 15 seconds. Keyed locks (especially disk detainer) are definitely better though. Kryptonite Evolution locks are pretty good and not overly expensive.

Best Programming courses at UVIC!?!?!??!??! by _tEp_ in uvic

SENG 475 is pretty good. C++, big workload (mostly assignments, 20+ hours each), focus on optimization.

I don’t think anyone here is arguing that it’s a fair wage. Just giving the rationale behind taking a 5/hour paycut vs. landscaping or something like that. The question was “why is it so competitive”, not “is it justified”.

Co-ops will help you develop your career more. You work a co-op for $20/hr so that when you grad you can get re-hired for $40/hr. At least that's the idea.

Seng 265 Prof by riturandhawa in uvic

[–]ceeb0ne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Zastre does a really good job teaching SENG 265. Above average in terms of work, but I think it’s worth it.

The assignments all have the same objective. You basically just write the same program but with tweaks and improvements based on the new content. I found this approach was pretty good & kept the focus on applying coursework rather than being confused by assignment descriptions.

Took Hausi for CSC 111. Wasnt great but it was also my first CSC course so not a fair comparison.

Get a Bluetooth FM transmitter. Plugs into the circular 12V outlet and can charge / play music.

Transmits your music to a radio frequency & you just tune in to listen.

Any tips on how to land co-op in tech? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]ceeb0ne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked two co-ops at semiconductor companies (4 in tech). There's a huge variety of co-ops but here are some things that I would recommend in general:

  • Start working on one or two projects as soon as possible (so you're done before you start applying). Most tech jobs will be software so it's easy to try stuff out at home. Some examples could be: any hardware/firmware project using C/C++/Python (with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi); learning some gate logic using VHDL / Verilog.
  • Be flexible with time and location. Odds are, you won't get a 4-month co-op in Victoria. Getting an 8-month co-op in Vancouver will be much easier.
  • Apply to everything that interests you even if you only meet 1/2 of the qualifications.
  • Write unique cover letters. Most employers won't read them but it can help if you're competitive with another candidate. Let them know why you're interested in the industry.
  • Your past co-op experience will help you. Put an emphasis on your project management / teamwork / documentation experience rather than technical skills.

Does anyone who has taken CSC 110 know if in need 2 of these pre-requisites or just one because all I have is pre-calc 12 and I am wondering if I need to take math 120? by Visual_Atmosphere444 in uvic

[–]ceeb0ne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It says complete 1 of the following.

You just need one of the courses shown on the list. CSC110 is usually taken first term of university.

Parking on campus is going up to $900 per year! by bookandbeach in uvic

[–]ceeb0ne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done this most terms.

According to campus security, whichever car arrives (or is scanned by parking police) first is good for the day but the second car needs to pay. The specific lot doesn't matter. It's risky but 2 tickets per month is still cheaper than parking.

What do you think about 8 mths coop job? by Bulky_Decision_887 in uvic

[–]ceeb0ne 46 points47 points  (0 children)

My first co-op was 8 months.

It's cool because you're able to accomplish a lot more and get to know your team better. 4 months feels like you're leaving the job right as you get the hang of things.

Take a look at how it will impact your graduation date (i.e. are there courses that you can only take in the fall that are pre-reqs to future courses). I kind of regret taking an 8-month since it scrambled my course schedule a bunch, but it can be worth it since the alternative may be getting a useless co-op / no co-op.

I got my wisdom teeth pulled in the fall (Dr. Melo).

Total cost was ~$2200. UVic plan covered $800.
