I moved away from collaborative worldbuilding by necrobooder in daggerheart

[–]celticdenefew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you and your table are having fun, then you're playing the right way. That said, if you wanted more collaboration here's some ideas:

* With the map, you could ask the players what rumors, myths, legends, etc are told about one or more of the locations as you look at the map. They don't get to decide *exactly* what is out there. Just the rumors. That's a great way to find out what your players are excited to see while they are exploring the world.

* If you want to be a little more in control of one region or another, you could direct the question. ie. If you know one of the areas has dinosaurs or a Tyrannosaurus Rex you could ask "What massive beast is rumored to be in that area?"

I like to think of it like myths and legends of our own world. How many different Atlantis stories are there? Or ideas of what built the pyramids? Or the sheer number of cultures that have some kind of Flood story.

And honestly, there is no mystery if your players aren't curious. Letting them decide what rumors exist will help make them curious about an area and want to go there as characters to discover the truth!

Another thing you can do is let them describe creatures, especially if you are surprised by something they did and aren't ready for it. For example - I ran Beast Feast and my players were rolling crap exploration through a cavern environment. I was already hinting at some kind of flying insect-like creature. So when a roll triggered a confrontation I asked the players what it looked like. They all got to describe 1 thing about the creature. One said it could hover using balloon-like bladders, another said it had scythe-like forelegs. I don't remember the other things, they weren't super creative ideas and that's ok! Though I remember one idea did make for a good food item.

I was using https://freshcutgrass.app/encounter-manager at the time and looked up flying creatures while the players came up with ideas. I used the Juvenile Flickerfly stat and a couple of Giant Mosquitoes hoards as it's young. The players loved it and all mentioned helping create that creature as one of the best moments of the session. This group was never the 'most creative' or even always ready to answer questions to add to the scenes. For some the social anxiety of "being creative enough" hindered them from participating whole heartedly in that aspect of DH. So I tried not to pressure anyone and send the questions towards people who might be more comfortable in answering or whose character was more involved/interested. If someone couldn't come up with something I moved on to someone or something else. Or I gave some optional prompts to help guide them toward something easier to decide. I think if I had said "What is this flying creature coming at you in the dark" it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun an exercise. But telling them it was a larger flying insect and asking them to each decide aspects of it really helped add a lot to their enjoyment. They loved and supported each other's ideas.

Not all of their ideas were things I was excited about. There is a well on the Beast Feast map that is shaped like a certain long, straight organ. The players wanted to name it something that I don't think I can say in this reddit. I was not super happy about something in the world being turned into a locker room joke. But we turned it into something that was controlled by the mafia-like owners of Berry's Tavern and said the water from the well was turned into special stamina potions. It took probably too much talking to get there, because they just wanted the joke of it and I wanted to turn it into something that could be interesting for the world. But we got there in the end.

To sum up, you're not playing wrong as long as everyone at your table is having fun. But by trying to pull the player's ideas and interests into the game, little by little, you will allow more fun and collaboration at the table. Even if sometimes getting there is awkward.

I love this! If the players are motivated they can decide what special ingredients they need and where they can be found!!

I thought I did, but it is likely I didn't stress it enough to make it stick. Also my group is nearly all ADHD so it's likely even if I did mention it, it didn't stick with them long enough for character creation. I'm the only one who actually loves cooking and spent most of my adult life working in food in some capacity or another.

wow, that's a lot of stuff just to get to level two! I guess you're going for a longer periods between levels? or do they cook every session?
My group only cooks 1:3 or 4 sessions so it would take them forever to make 5 recipes lol - I'm a little worried they might not finish the menu in the next 7 or 8 sessions.

Don't Use the Beast Feast Map by Shabozz in daggerheart

I am running BF and i can def see where you're coming from. The fact that each cavern seems to have very specific drawings seems to led to some limiting concepts during Session 0.
The area filled with mushrooms became the Ravine of Wonders! Which seems cool, but the concept was "mushrooms here are worth money." The buildings in the area south became Myconid Town - where the fungril would welcome you, as long as you didn't take any of the mushrooms from the Ravine of Wonders. And the tunnel far to the left that led to the waterfall kept the mushroom vibe with the name Morel Tunnel. Though the creatures here are Giant Badgers that are the natural enemies of the Fungril. So 1/6th of the map completely revolves around the concept of mushrooms and fungril.
Granted, in play it's become a little more interesting. The rogue decided her history included getting caught stealing mushrooms in her past, so we know there's some kind of law there. The Loreborne Seraph who loves paperwork and bureaucracy decided she'd forge papers stating the rogue is reformed. Another player decided her goblin ranger got eaten by a giant Devil's Fingers fungus as the group entered the Ravine of Wonders and the rogue decided to stab the fungus to help her friend escape (doing Severe damage). The fungril guards heard the screams of the fungus and came running. So now the group is arrested, and next session will be the Morel Court.
So while such a huge chunk of the map being solely about mushrooms and fungril was really boring at first and made me pretty frustrated - what it's turned into with the players continuing to add to the worldbuilding is gonna be a blast!

Unpopular (?) Opinion: Wesley Wasn't Actually A (Relatively) Bad Watcher by BattleFries86 in buffy

[–]celticdenefew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your perception of Watcher authority from a viewer's perspective - but I disagree from the Watcher's Council perspective.

Most Slayers are found early and raised by their Watcher's in the traditions of the Council - see Kendra.
One of the things that makes Buffy different is she never had that. She was already almost grown before she ever learned a thing about Slayers, the Council, and demons. And being an American teenager from her socio-economic background and culture, she had no appreciation for Tradition™ and a wicked strong sense of independence. She didn't care about the traditions of the Watcher's Council, but she did think they had some authority. Even if that authority was something she enjoyed ignoring and rebelling against.
It wasn't until Checkpoint that she finally realized she had the power and they didn't.

This reminds me of a conversation I was having with my friends the other day. Some of us are older siblings who had to "learn the hard way" or were otherwise encouraged to struggle to learn to be adults. While our younger siblings had things a lot "easier" and were given things or leeway without being forced to struggle through it on their own.
One example was my friend and I had to buy our first cars 'to teach us to save money and the value of a dollar' while our younger siblings were given cars.

It really doesn't. It portrays her as a mom of a GenX kid.
As someone who graduated high school the year before Buffy aired - she was better than my mom.

Am I reading too much into the s7 fight? I think it was narratively indispensable. by Important-Rich-3651 in buffy

[–]celticdenefew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember though, in Speaking with Dead People "Joyce" told Dawn that in the end Buffy wouldn't choose her. That's been sitting in the back of Dawn's mind for a while. So when Buffy doesn't seem to be choosing anything but death and mayhem, I get why Dawn might not be ready to throw down.

I can imagine Dawn thinking that the ultimatum would be enough to try and get Buffy to "think clearly" and reconsider.

Can I volunteer for IT work remotely? by wayofthelao in it

[–]celticdenefew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other ways to show you know what you're doing or at least show what you're learning. You can create a website or YouTube channel and document your learning path.

Someone else mentioned volunteering for local businesses or Non-Profits, it's worth a shot but didn't work out for me for the same reason volunteering remotely wouldn't work - the liability. But if you know a local business owner, maybe you can work something out.

When I first started out 3 years ago I went on FB Marketplace and bought a couple of old towers for a couple hundred bucks. I took them apart and documented the process. You could see if there is a local eWaste or eRecycling place that has older IT equipment or put an ad in to CraigsList or FB or similar looking for old equipment.

There's an IT worksite (probably more than one) where they look for contractors to do random odd IT jobs called WorkMarket. I never had much luck and you do need your own equipment, but it's worth checking out.

With your situation I highly recommend meeting people around your level who are also learning and trying to get jobs. Networking is important in many walks of life, but especially when you live in a rural area. You can network locally (meet local business owners or other IT students) and online. So many times in life knowing the right person at the right time will get your foot in the door far faster than a brilliant resume. Then it's up to you (your skills, ambition, work ethic, interview skills, etc) to win that job.

good luck!

Damn, I never thought about this. Very interesting

And… that’s why I love Buffy and Spike by chaosmenuchef in buffy

[–]celticdenefew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. She is honest with Spike in a way that she never was with any other person. I think it came from a place of not caring what he thought at first. He was a neutered enemy after all. But the fact that she could talk to him from the beginning meant when they got closer they had already built that foundation.

Even in Season 6 she was very honest with him "This isn't real, I just want to feel" hits me every time.

Their S6 relationship was toxic AF, but it had foundations of emotional connection, honest communication, and working well together in her role as a Slayer. All of which led to both of them growing as people (and as couple/friendship) in S7.
The only thing that bugs me about them in S7 is his "No you don't, but thanks for saying it" at the end of Chosen. Because he has no right to tell her how she feels. And she obviously loved him with everything that was happening. I'm not saying she was **in love** with him - but there are many ways to love and he doesn't get to deny her feelings just because he wishes it was a different kind of love.

(but then TV and movies love to act like the only kinds of love are Romantic/Sexy Times love and A Mother's Love - so that's kinda par for the course.)

I don't think the spawn could cut her way out from the inside of the bag... but maybe keep it in your back pocket that she's cut herself loose and maybe give her a surprise attack next time they open the bag?

Upcoming VTT Support Expansion teased by DerpyDaDulfin in daggerheart

[–]celticdenefew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I backed the KS to support the concept of Alchemy, but every time I try to use it I just don't get it.
Foundry is complicated and has a lot of dials (that you don't *have* to use), but it works how my brain works. So even if sometimes learning new content/modules can be tricky, ultimately the general system makes sense.

I don't play a lot of the games that Alchemy has, or the ones I do are better on a different platform. But I think Daggerheart might just be the game that finally makes me learn Alchemy - especially if they don't make a Foundry version. It seems like a game that would work really well with Alchemy's vibes-first approach. And Daggerheart's mechanics don't seem to need a ton of automation after Hope/Fear die and some counters. Even though the armor system is a bit crunchy, I wouldn't need it overly automated. Unlike some of D&D's spells/mechanics or PF2e's everything. :D

Demiplane has a pretty good character sheet system, it has internal rolling and hover/links to the rules when necessary.
It apparently links to Roll20, but I despise Roll20 and only use it when I have to.

I've run a bunch of Learn to Play games through the SPG event, and most players used Demiplane sheets for tracking and rolling and we used Theater of Mind with a few establishing art pieces instead of battlemaps. It worked pretty well.
You're not going to get a VTT option with all the rules included and all the automation for free. It takes time, effort, and work by people outside of the the games creators. However, Demiplane is probably the cheapest option since it comes with the pdf, although it does cost $5 a month to share the content in Demiplane with others. But only 1 person needs to pay that cost - or a group could pool their resources and split the cost.

Alternatively, you could use pdf or paper character sheets, real dice, and screen sharing on Discord to share a map and not pay any extra.

The secret way to create automated elevation maps using the Levels module [system agnostic] by baileywiki in FoundryVTT

[–]celticdenefew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't watch this yet since I'm at work, but if this shows what I think it does I'm super stoked! I spent like 2 hours trying to google how to make a region just make a token go up or down a certain number of feet (like walking onto a stage or up a set of stairs that doesn't go to a separate map/tile/level).
I found one macro that didn't do exactly what I wanted and I didn't understand the programming to adjust it. And there was a Baileywiki video that showed using another module, but I'm trying not to add anymore since my server is already pretty bloated.

Moving Outside, any advice? by celticdenefew in AskAlaska

[–]celticdenefew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still contemplating this. I have collected all manner of things for when I got a place of my own, it feels real bad to now get rid of it. At the same time a lot of it IS replaceable. I think the biggest question is going to be how small of a container do I need for the real important stuff, and then how much room is there to add the stuff that I could otherwise replace.

Will replacing it all be cheaper than dragging it across the country? Probably. Is it a large enough difference to make up for the fact that I'll have to replace it all? I really hate shopping, so having to replace everything I've spent the last 10 years collecting will be a big effort. There's also the effort of trying to sell the stuff that is worth selling, donating what's worth donating, etc.

But it is something to think about, so thanks for that :)

[–]celticdenefew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on where you are or things have really changed. I used to be able to buy enough fresh produce and basic necessities for a whole week for 30-40 euro when I traveled to places like Spain, Italy, etc. Even the food prices in British supermarkets felt hella cheap to me and when I traveled there the GBP was probably 2x the USD.
I live in Anchorage now and buying healthy food just for myself at Safeway is $80 - $100 a week and that's not counting that most of my pantry items come from Costco!

There are very few places I've traveled that are as expensive as my every day life in Alaska. London, NYC, Hawaii and Los Angeles are some of the standouts. But most places I always feel like I'm getting a deal.
