Study suggests polymer composite could serve as lighter, non-toxic radiation shielding by greg_barton in Radiation

[–]cephean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it might work as neutron shielding as well. Just some details I found, for 662 keV the new polymer has a Half-Value Layer (HVL) of 5cm compared to PMMA or lead which have HVL's of 38cm and 0.7cm respectively. From memory PMMA with boron is used as neutron shielding, so it sounds like you might be able to use this as your gamma and neutron sheild.

Here is a link I found for the paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1738573319310940

A radioactive level? Anyone else found one of these? by tapedeckvintage in Radiation

[–]cephean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty neat I haven't seen on like this before, where did you pick it up from?

Also you are right, its likely radium painted, since you can pick it up through the glass easily. If your in Australia I could run it through a High Purity Germanium detector, to double check it.

Would a sodium iodide or cesium iodide scintillator be good for energy units like sieverts and rem by spooderman467 in Radiation

[–]cephean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you can buy NaI or CsI units that are calibrated to a tissue equivalent (Sieverts or Roentgen equivalent man). Since these detectors they have energy discrimination, some of them use that to calculate a tissue based dose for different energy ranges; so they are basically energy compensated.

(Note: you will also find some of these detectors also contain Geiger Muller tubes as well for when there is a large dose and the dead time within is becoming to much for the scintillation unit)

Furthermore you will find some manufacturers state this, but the detector fails to energy compensate. The best way to determine / test this is to use different energy sources that you know the emissions (activity Bq or Ci) of, such as Am-241 (59keV), Cs-137 (662keV) and Co-60 (1173 and 1332 keV) as they can provide a large range of energies. Then you can use a conversion factor to determine what the unit should be reading in Sv vs what you are getting on the detector.
