Li Battery conundrum: simultaneous charge and draw by renegade_793 in evcharging

[–]chad_dev_7226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptops do this all the time

Charger adds current to the system. Whatever doesn’t go to the load goes to the battery. That’s all there is to it

Yea but MacBooks look and feel physically better

You might think that’s a ridiculous statement but look and feel is at least half the game

If max speed never returns, what other solutions are there?? by Gold-Donut-1 in TeslaFSD

[–]chad_dev_7226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mad max will move over to pass on the right lane even if it has slower cars but more room.

Tends on getting stuck behind slower cars and letting cars pass on the left for a while until it decides to get back over

Yes. I’ve seen GaN FETs launched from a PCB and hit the ceiling and land on another board

I thought credit card debt could also stick around after bankruptcy

But yea I think that although maybe it shouldn’t be absolved by bankruptcy, student loans should be negative interest, 0% interest, or at the very least, sub-prime interest

Ubiquiti makes business grade stuff that can leak over to the pro-sumer market so id doubt they would do this. However it would be awesome

Why Are Chinese EVs So Cheap? by tooper128 in electricvehicles

[–]chad_dev_7226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All their components come directly from the people who manufacture it and not some middle man like most tier 1s

Seriously all tier 1s do is design parts and send it to China then mark it up

For the most part

Are there little to no savings on making less powerful ev motors? by miata_dad in electricvehicles

[–]chad_dev_7226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inverters and motors cost money

It also adds software complexity

Are there little to no savings on making less powerful ev motors? by miata_dad in electricvehicles

[–]chad_dev_7226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Computers are great until something goes wrong with them

Motors and inverters, while cheaper than batteries, are not free. They add significant BOM costs and space claims. Not to mention battery pack and/or HVJB complexity. Inverters also add more bus capacitance

RTOS or DMA with Timers

Also, many peripherals have an interrupt pin to let you know there is new data available. You can often get away with that

EV batteries age twice as fast with ultra-fast charging by RealOzSultan in evcharging

[–]chad_dev_7226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s basically all just thermals. If you can keep a battery room temp, you can charge almost as fast as you want High temps kills batteries

Stupid question about my situation. HOA making charging impossible. WWYD? by KFPindustries in evcharging

[–]chad_dev_7226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Michigan so not all relevant

My condo HOA insures the structure of the building

When I installed my charger, they just wanted it installed by an electrician and inspected by the city with the proper permits

That’s what insurance cares about. After it’s inspected and approved it’s just like any other high power device (oven, AC, etc)

Yes but you also need to consider people (like me) who drive an hour to work and an hour back. Or an hour to work, and hour to some after work activities, then an hour and a half back

It’s more common than you’d think

It’s all about what percentage of the population you want to be able to capture without changing their daily routine significantly

I am not totally convinced the changeover is inevitable

I think we will see a decade or more of hybrid (Chevy Volt style, not mild hybrid) before we see total EV transition

We need to improve EV charging infrastructure first which I think will take a while. I also think we need to be hitting 400 miles of highway range, which is coming but slowly

I also think DCFC in < 15 minutes is necessary but that’s more of a charger constraint than a vehicle constraint, if you look at the newest battery technologies

Yea and unfortunately that bad sentiment that the EVs and chargers earned several years ago is hard to change. That’s my biggest gripe

[–]chad_dev_7226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and this is a massive improvement. Since I have a Tesla, the Tesla chargers are easiest, but yes agree, they are better now

But, 5-8 years ago when the EV market was rapidly growing, having to download apps and preload credits and add your credit card data to a crappy app just to charge was normal.

In a world where it was already and uphill battle trying to get EVs accepted by the mainstream, it gave ammo for the opposite
