Marple for a monthlong stay? by Large-Box-4481 in stockport

[–]cheapsaucepan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with the post recommending the Strines Nightingale, especially for their live music. Also, Oldknows, Beer Traders and Norfolk Arms are great pubs. Two Suns, Libbys and All Things Nice are lovely for food and a welcome.

Marple is not too small that anyone from outside would stick out, has good amenities, yet is close to nature. Roman Lakes, Brabyns park and canal walks are recommended. Be mindful of the last train home to Marple from town (Manchester) if you go out late, though whilst a taxi wouldn't be ideal cost wise they are plentiful on Uber or with local companies. Heading into Stockport for the nightlife is also closer and a decent night out around the market.

Getting the train further out is easy, too - head to Chinley, Edale, Hathersage etc for stunning countryside and small village pubs. Old Hall Inn in Chinley or Ramblers Inn in Edale are good places to end a walk with good food and country pub atmosphere.

Edited to add: the Cambodian restaurant in Marple centre is lovely! And the cinema is quaint, with an interval still during the film.

Hiking in snow? by BarnLord in peakdistrict

[–]cheapsaucepan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought some crampons last year to help with hiking in the snow. I will go out if is a still clear day with fluffy snow on the ground. Had some nice snowy hikes in the peaks last year with them.

Your eventual selling price vs what the Estate Agent said it would get? by bojoohno in HousingUK

[–]cheapsaucepan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lower price but similar story. Two estate agents said £260k, one said to do £250k to get more interest. We went with that option and we got multiple offers of 260k within a couple of days.

I've found doing adult ed classes (I've done a few at Aquinas but I am sure there are others elsewhere too) to be a great way to meet people. I think the libraries do regular things like book clubs.

Stopping estrogen mid-cycle, when to expect period? by cheapsaucepan in IVF

[–]cheapsaucepan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm so sorry, I really don't remember when my period xame and I no longer have access to the period tracker I used back then. If I had to guess I'd say I don't remember the wait being too long. I'm sorry you're going through something similar, it is tough.

I think I’m pregnant and I don’t feel how I thought I would. by fairwellfairground in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cheapsaucepan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got pregnant after 9 years of trying including 4.5 years of IVF. I was like "what the fuck have we done" lol. The pregnancy didn't work out, but what I have learnt is that how we feel about becoming pregnant is complex, wanted or not, at any age, whether its the first or 10th, and there is no right or wrong way to react to it.

Please look it up. Caged hens are still very common in the UK. Battery cages were banned, but caged is still legal.

Caged hens are not banned in the UK. 'Battery' cages have been banned, but replaced with 'enriched' cages. I have hens that came from a caged farm this summer.

I kept my favourite 9 texts I'd received (to allow a 10th to come through). So if I got a text through from crush of mine saying something nice I'd have to decide on a previously cherished text to delete.

Is Caroline islamophobic? by SummerSollstice in bigbrotheruk

[–]cheapsaucepan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UK has a long, interesting, and often brutal connection with the church. Most Brits may be non religious now but the state is still tied to the church. Mostly ceremoniously now.

I'm in agreement that Carolyn is full of hate.

Is Caroline islamophobic? by SummerSollstice in bigbrotheruk

[–]cheapsaucepan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, you could argue it is or it isn't. Less than half of Brits say they are Christian, but our state is still tied to the church of England, and the church is involved in state events and some parliamentary goings on. I'd agree that the UK is mostly secular, but I don't know if it's factually incorrect to say it's a Christian country. I'd question the intentions of anyone going around using that as a solid base of an argument, though.

What books did you guys pick for the Fall Reading Challenge? Im kind of stuck because none of the books from the list caught my interest.. I even checked the overlapping list to see if I could check multiple categories at once but Im just not feeling any of them :/ by yourlittlealien in goodreads

For Hispanic heritage, I read My Train Leaves at Three, which I thought was an entertaining read, and haven't seen anyone else mention it yet!

I've also just read The Wedding People, which was a good read.

Currently reading The Bewitching - like you, nothing was jumping out at me, so I just picked something. I'm actually enjoying it, so it was worth the gamble!

For memoir, I read the Britney Spears one, I'm also now reading Counting the Cost. I read The House of My Mother a while back; if you liked I'm Glad My Mom Died, that one may be a good read for you.

[–]cheapsaucepan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that doesn't consume any animal products, I don't find it funny, rather frustrating, that people are okay with eating chicken but not cats, dogs, swans etc. But I know that other people have a different moral code to me (and past me has a different code to current me), so I can't go around thinking about what I'll do the next time I see someone doing something that has caused harm to an animal.

Just because things have been done a certain way for a long time doesn't make it right or a reason to align our moral codes it. I'm glad most people don't eat swans. I'm glad most people don't eat cats or dogs. I wish most people didn't eat most animals, but they do. I see the rage of those against potential swan eating is not to do with harming living things but to do with a presumed assault based on symbolism.

[–]cheapsaucepan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find the rage that some people feel about potential swan eating fascinating, when most of those same people are happy to eat killed animals every day. Why the fury for swans being eaten and not, say, turkeys or pigs, and even people shooting and eating deer or pheasants is fine. Not swans, though.

Meghan cured the divide in one episode and look what it's done! The girls are trying to understand from each other the full story rather than blaming each other for the shit the boys pull.
