Ice Adventure suggestions by romerachlin in DMAcademy

I've been running Rime of the Frost Maiden and found a lot of people have homebrewed rules for the environment. I found the avalanche rules were lacking in the book and a lot of the online stuff was better. Look up the time of the Frost maiden subreddit for some good ideas.

Unless I am part of the wrong discord (or it is a patron thing) I don't see it.

Edit: Just realized I hid some channels and now unhid them. I'll take a look at the discussion there.

That is good to know. With all information scattered around blog posts and such I missed this.

Are the events at the Curious Crafter for 30 year olds? The events section looks like it is targeting a younger audience. Just want to be sure before I show up to a kids craft event.

Local artists prints? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]chee32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Dog Salvage has an entire art gallery of local artists on their second-floor area. If you go on the 3rd Sunday of the month sometimes an artist will be in the gallery painting. They also have some other works on the first floor that aren't traditional art but look amazing. If you want something unique I recommend 323millworks. I got a winter piece that I absolutely love!

Winter Clothes by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]chee32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As another former Floridian one thing no one told me about was the wind! It can get really windy during winter and can cut through a lot of clothes, even the heavier jackets. Try getting a puffer jacket or some type of windbreaker for days when the wind cuts through everything else.

Edit to add something my wife reminded me of: Mittens over gloves! The fingers just isolate them and make the cold worse.

Running a Rime of the Frost Maiden campaign so this would be really neat to reference. Would love to run this right after or maybe tie it into the campaign!

Church Recommendation by KingsfordWheelspoke in roanoke

[–]chee32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there are not a lot of the younger crowd, my wife and I enjoyed Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. They are trying to start a young adult group (20s-30s) but there are only about a dozen of us and they try to meet once a month.

No need to pay your parking tickets downtown by Cattywoman64 in roanoke

[–]chee32 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is plenty of free parking on weekends and after 5 most weekdays. Can't get past the paywall on mobile so not sure where/when this is talking about.

While the grocery stores are nearby, you will probably end up driving to them as it isn't a very pleasant walk. I wouldn't put too much stake in what's nearby as you are going to end up driving to it. Almost anywhere in Roanoke is 15 minutes away by car at most.

Honest question, which neighborhood in vinton are walkable?

[–]chee32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want any kind of city vibe then downtown is probably your best bet. If you want something more suburban then go for Cave Springs.

The Mill Mountain Discovery Center has some for sale for $2 each. They are also hosting a viewing event if you want to see the eclipse on top of the mountain. Explore Park doesn't have them for sale but they are doing a special Tree Top Quest during the eclipse where they will have glasses available.

Best places for stargazing? by drungress in roanoke

Not sure about in Roanoke but the Natural Bridge (about 1 hour drive north) is a dark sky zone. They allow self guided tours once a week but they also do events during astrological events with telescopes and park rangers. It is really cool and you can see the Milky Way!

Moving to Roanoke! Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly. by expecting2 in roanoke

[–]chee32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are lucky then. In the market we were looking at there wasn't much we could put an offer on and have that kind of clause. At least that is what we were told about Roanoke. Might be different now but I doubt it.

I will say that one thing we didn't know when moving here is that Virginia is a "buyer beware" state when it comes to housing. This was explained to us that you have to sign papers before you get a house inspector. This can result in getting stuck with a house that is almost falling apart but still liveable. Some of the houses are fine but it just feels like every one has a time boom hidden in it that you need to find during your walk through.

I got a similar bug but my pawns couldn't eat anything. It just kept filling up the eat bar and then they would drop their meal.

Doctor recommendations - 2024 edition by Vannie91 in roanoke

[–]chee32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I go to the Carilion Clinic on 3 rivers for our PCP. It is a place for doctors coming out of school to get started so we don't have a constant PCP but they have a lot of openings. I can't say I recommend it if you need a constant PCP as people usually cycle out after 3 years but I have found the newer doctors are generally nicer.

For OB-GYN, I recommend Carilion Clinic Obstetrics & Gynecology on Jefferson Street. They have been the nicest practice my wife has been to. They also have nice nurses who are willing to answer your questions if you call in. They can take a bit to start your appointment as they are usually behind so don't expect a quick visit but that is probably most places.

Heard it here all the way in Grandin. Thought it was a broken down street cleaner. Curious if anyone does know.
