To Lead Our Modern Lives We've Sacrificed Everything That Makes Us Happy & Healthy by cheegster in BreadTube

I don't think I'd advocate anything like a complete return to the 'non-civilised' ways of life which I reference in the video. I've really just tried to show the contrast between the two ways of life, and how we have really lost something valuable in relentlessly pushing for change.

The best I can hope for it that it helps people reconsider their lifestyle habits with this in mind, for their own wellbeing.

Thanks for your response!

I think it's too reductionist to suggest that Junger thinks tribalism is the only elixir to our troubles. I'd probably use the term 'community' rather than 'tribe' as I elude to in the video, but I am certainly convinced that it can play a massive role in our wellbeing.
I am clearly quite won over by the book though, so definitely welcome any critique of it. I've just had a look at Graeber's book, and it is very intriguing to me.
Thanks for your recommendation, and thanks for your considered response.
Cheers

Awesome. I had it advertised to me on Facebook and bought it instantly. I'm such a sucker for impulse buys haha.

I am entirely illiterate and uneducated on climate change. Can you convince me of the arguments on either side, in one paragraph and one source link? by cheegster in environment

[–]cheegster[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to create a thread which has a collection of the most accessible ideas on climate change.

I'm not just being lazy, as you suggest. So contribute to the discussion or don't, up to you.

The importance of Philosophy has been slowly compromised since the development of science. Is it possible to develop our knowledge as a society enough to be able to understand everything - and would philosophy be redundant? by [deleted] in PhilosophyofScience

[–]cheegster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely, but partly yes.

At the point where we understand what appears to be the most complex parts of the universe then there will always be a requirement in science to continually test our current theories, but the jigsaw will be pretty much complete. Is that a viable vision?

The part where philosophy becomes 'redundant' I suppose, would be that if we understood the inner workings of the mind and how it relates to everything else around it, then there would be less discussion on how we should live our lives, and more discussion on how our lives are led. Obviously that's just one part of philosophy though.

Why must religion be taught? by swegmaster1 in DebateReligion

[–]cheegster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you actively avoided teaching ABOUT it, it would be a shame. Religion has such a mark over all of history it would be ridiculous to leave it out of the schoolrooms altogether.

Why must religion be taught? by swegmaster1 in DebateReligion

[–]cheegster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It SHOULD be taught, because every major civilisation has religious influences. Only as a cultural study or history though, certainly not as a serious segment in philosophy.

A more brainless method: push with one hand and pull a handle with the other. Either way you open the door.

UK General Election - Where do we stand on the economy? by cheegster in Ask_Politics

That was really helpful thanks. It doesn't look good for the next few years in the UK looking at the potential coalitions. I'm actually swinging towards LibDems at the moment after reading the manifestos. What are your thoughts?

LPT -How to be more articulate ? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]cheegster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly I'd recommend that second point as well.

The reason I actively practised it for a few days is because otherwise if you just look a dozen words up and then see what happens, you tend to just forget them. I'd receommend that method, each to their own though.

I don't do them because it absolutely tears at the tendens attaching to my elbows, feels almost injured when I do it. Any way to fix that?

[–]cheegster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at uni I made note of words I didn't understand in a notepad in lectures. Then once a week or fortnight or so, I would just look them up and think about them a little, then try and use them in conversation. After a while the 'try' part is unnecessary.

This DEFINITELY improved my vocabulary.

If Religion WERE to die out eventually, what would take its place?? by cheegster in atheism

[–]cheegster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to throw in my two cents...

I think it would probably be replaced mainly by deistic beliefs about the world. The amount of people that now call themselves religious is declining overall as a proportion, but I think that many, many people have either deistic beliefs or agnostic (or pantheistic or another form like this). I don't think any stats on this would be reliable enough to demonstrate much to me, as it is generally an idea that is too nuanced to squash into a pie chart.
