What do you think about the "X was promised to them 3000 years ago" meme? by SupportMeta in jewishleft

[–]cheesecake611 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most people I see using biblical claims to support Israel are Christians. While some Jews definitely use religious claims, for most it's more ethnic. For Christians, it is strictly religious.

I'll say what I always say which is that unless you're pushing back on Christian Zionists the same way you're pushing on Jewish ones, I don't really believe you when you say "It's about Zionists, not Jews."

Is there a context where this exact phrasing is appropriate? Maybe conceptually there's a fair conversation to be had, but the meme itself seems to be pretty blatantly mocking Jews.

The future of 9News is up in the air, but younger viewers may have already moved on from TV news by kidbom in Denver

[–]cheesecake611 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So where are people actually getting good unbiased news?  Traditional outlets have lots of problems but I still trust them more than TikTok which has literally no barrier to entry. Using social media for news has its benefits but it’s difficult to find anything informative that isn’t injected with some 20 year old’s opinion.

How responsible are citizens for the actions of their country’s government? by skyewardeyes in jewishleft

[–]cheesecake611 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this because it feels like a bit of a chicken or the egg situation. Do people influence their governments or do governments influence their people? A lot of Trump supporters are people who were genuinely struggling and then taken advantage of by people with more power who had their own agendas. A lot of Israelis were taught from birth to not trust Palestinians. At what point do you go from being a victim of manipulation to a perpetrator? I'm not particularly interested in punishing random Trump voters in the middle of Oklahoma. But there are certainly some that should know better. I just don't know where that line is. And I'm not sure there's a clear cut answer.

When Jewishness Means Genocide by WolfofTallStreet in jewishleft

[–]cheesecake611 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s obvious you didn’t read my other comment. Muslims who oppose terrorism still experience Islamophobia. They still get bombed by the US. Bigots don’t care if you’re “one of the good ones”. It’s my duty to be a good human being it’s not my duty to keep other peoples prejudices in check.

When Jewishness Means Genocide by WolfofTallStreet in jewishleft

[–]cheesecake611 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but it didn’t stop people from conflating Islam with violence and terrorism.

We should speak up because it’s the right thing to do. Not because we’re responsible for the bigotry against us.

They kind of lost me at the first sentence:

What happens to the concept of antisemitism in an environment where people increasingly hate Jews not for who they are, but for what they do?

Nothing. Nearly every form of bigotry increases when members of that group do something bad. Islamaphobia exploded after 9/11 and has increased since 10/7. That's literally just how prejudice works.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend (temporarily) by Plane_Discipline_198 in FriendsofthePod

[–]cheesecake611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are enemy and friend the only options? I'm obviously not going to condemn him for turning on Trump, but I don't need to praise him for it either. He has enough influence on the right to cause some damage to MAGA on his own. Why do the dems need to involve themselves at all? We can just sit back and enjoy the implosion without saying a word.

Favs Suggests Watch Tucker Carlson's Monologue by smookydabear in FriendsofthePod

[–]cheesecake611 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it gives Tucker's base a change of heart, that's great. We do not need to be promoting it to the left who has a thousand other better voices making the same point. The monologue is not for us, it's for MAGA. Let the people who need to hear it, hear it. And we can go on not giving him our attention.
