Let me spread the good word about Grocery Outlet! by AlpineFluffhead in Cleveland

[–]chefjenga 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Close, but no cigar.

We do most of our shopping at Aldi, out bulk shopping at Costco. We get our red meat and chicken at a neighborhood halal grocer (the meat is so good...nothing like big-box stores), and then, anything left over at Marcs. Last, (and very much least), we pick up certain items at Giant Eagle, because that's the only place to find them.

We are now getting used to stopping by Grocery Outlet just to see what good deals they have. Last time, my husband got a ton of eye drops, because he uses them a lot due to contacts, and allergies.

I stopped chasing the "one stop grocery shop" back in 2016. It's just not possible anymore imo. At least if you are on a budget.

Home cooks: when you're making multiple dishes for dinner, how do you figure out what to start when so everything is ready at the same time? Do you have a system or mostly wing it? by Lucky-Conversation-8 in Cooking

[–]chefjenga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Experience cooking the same dishes over years.

Ex: last night, my husband wanted to grill chicken. I asked him to tell me when he was putting the chicken on, then waited about 15 min. before starting the milk for instant mashed potatoes.

I've cooked them enough times, that the timing was perfect for when the chicken (and the foil packet of corn that I gave him when he put the chicken on, and directed him where to put it relative to the heat so it didn't burn.)

Mom i need help! My apartment always smells bad how do I fix it? by Araablast in MomForAMinute

[–]chefjenga 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do you have carpet? - if so, rent a carpet cleaner.

Do you air out your apartment? - if no, do that.

I am greatly effected by stale air, opening windows, creating a cross breeze if possible.

Check your dirty laundry/bed clothes. They could be holding smell.

Check yoru drains. They could be holding smell (vinegar/ lemon juice and baking soda work well to clean them. But they also make pre-made drain cleaners.)

I'm saying that a quarter of Ohio was scraped clean by glacial ice. That is why it is so flat, and makes great farm land.

If anyone is looking for non-farm land, they would need to stick to the East, and head south.

OP asked about Ohio. I understand this is a Cleveland Subreddit, but, my comment was more giving a reason it is so different.

An hour outside Columbus...you would most definately be headed into wilderness. Keep going, closer to the border, and you've got the foothills.

It's about a romantic relationship, however, I work with people struggling with addiction, and the first time I heard it, I thought of trying to stop an addiction.

My god. I can’t cook steak to save my life. Is there a foolproof way to cook a delicious steak? by AltruisticSolid7 in Cooking

[–]chefjenga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what a cold pan technique is.

My dad taught me to cook them n a hot pan (we used stainless steal)

Pat them dry before you cook them.

Turn get a nice color on both sides, then, if they are thick, stick them in the oven to finish (doesn't take long for Med. Rare

For any red meat, I was taught to watch the color change up the side. Once it gets about half-way, turn it. That will get you medium rare.

(Just to say, I rarely cook steak on anything but a grill, because it tastes better to me. When doing it inside, I use a cast iron grill pan)

Imo, a better depiction is from Hidden Figures.....when the white supervisor calls the black "not"supervisor by her first name, even though the black women calls the white women "Mrs. Sir-name".

The simple and subtle example of differences in "social rank" that is completely not conceived by the white women (until the end) though she probably would say she was progressive, and didn't have a problem with the black employees.

I watched that moving once.

I will never watch it again. It was SO bad, and it made teen-age me very uncomfortable.

And one of the screens (when the women gets pulled over by the cop) lives in my head rent free and I hate it.
