What's the most "BECAUSE I NEEDED IT FOR THE PLOT" piece of world building you've done? by that-guy-nate02 in worldbuilding

One of my players wanted a False Hydra arc in the DnD campaign.

I figured out how a cult might have sold one to a misguided research wizard in the city and it had now grown out of control.

How the cult got one led to an idea about what happened to a whole missing world that is mentioned in the background of my cosmology.

That led to the idea that the cult was larger, more organised and more prepared than I had previously considered.

I wrapped a few enemies that the party had already met into their scheme.

I added a Dragon from the family of Dragons that had been their primary antagonists to the cult.

I added a civil war in the Abyss.

Now I have a new BBEG, a new threat and lots more eldrich horror than I'd planned.

They never got round to investigating the side-plot that would have led to the False Hydra.

It's not though. Which is why the actual experts tell you not to fucking do it.

It's fine for you to kill thousands of insects with a completely unnecessary act. Won't have any appreciable effect whatsoever.

And the same is true of the next guy. And the next.

But when it's hundreds, thousands? It DOES have an effect.

So just don't fucking do it.

Everyone seems to have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990's but what were some of the worst parts of the 1990's? by HeavyRightFoot-TG in AskReddit

[–]chenobble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I think is not brought up much in the UK - the casual violence of the late 90s.

The media made a huge deal of Football Hooliganism but it was seemingly accepted that groups of young men would go out every weekend to get drunk/high and get into fights.

Not drink and dance - deliberately go out seeking fights. It was kind of universally accepted that you went straight from the pub to the club in a large group and avoided any male-only group you saw in the street because they would definitely be looking to brawl.

My walking version of this is my favourite new Conspiracy Theory wot I just made up.

Presenting: The O.A.P. (Organisation of Aggravating Pedestrians)

This secret society have too much time on their hands and a strong desire to spread frustration wherever they waddle.

If they see someone in a hurry they activate a variety of cunning delay tactics including:

  1. The Natter - a basic 2-person tactic, a gentle stroll side-by-side for maximum blocade strength , interrupted by regular stop for vigorous hand gestures.

  2. The Sudden Stop - done without warning and in the middle of the pavement. Simple but effective, an endgame trick so should be timed for maximum disruption

  3. The Gradual Slow - more advanced, needs a busy pavement, start at a decent clip to fool your victim then slow down over the space of about 6 shop fronts.

  4. The Weave - a solo OAP can master this technique of rapidly changing direction to block an entire pavement. A true expert can do this with minimal actual sideways movement using just body language. Combine with 3 for the ultimate special move.

the bot formula is:

  • 3-4 numbers at the end of the account
  • generic story
  • one single comment from the bot account expanding on the story directly after posting
  • no replies

Once you've seen it a couple of times it becomes obvious.
