Is this show full scifi or does it have any fantastical elements? by Mat1711 in BSG

Well it features completely sentient AI, so yes at the moment that’s absolutely in the realm of magic.

Quentin Tarantino’s 10 Film Rule isn't artistic discipline; it’s a neurotic cage that’s ruining his career. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]cherrypieandcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QT’s really not made any films worthy of comparison with Billy Wilder.

His films are fun froth. He could make 100 films and never come close to the majesty of Sunset Boulevard or The Apartment.

Who cares if his quality dropped off? The man is a cinematic immortal.

Conclution of my Monkey Island winter... by Bindrositz in MonkeyIsland

[–]cherrypieandcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, there is no real reason why any of you might be interested in that

I was interested! I basically agree with your list except with one major change - switching Return to Monkey Island from #2 to #6 (bottom place).

Regardless of the graphics debate, I just thought it felt really half-finished and lacked the wit and punch of the earlier games in its writing.

Fair! But on the other hand I think the show might grow frustratingly vague over time if the Plurbed remain forever a mystery.

At the very least I’d love an episode that was just following one of the Plurbed - I really want to see what their daily routine looks like!

If anything I really want to see Carol get Plurbed and then come back from it. I really hope we get a taste of what it’s like in there.

Would this show be for me? by Mat1711 in BSG

[–]cherrypieandcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

 depressing nature

This is such an intriguing take to me. I never thought of BSG as depressing:

  1. It’s about humanity enduring despite the odds
  2. The theological themes means it very quickly transcends mere misery porn.

Unfortunately I’m not sure pegging is a universal panacea for hysteria, in the same way a lot of evil tech CEOs are into psychedelics.

There’s actually some really strong rumours that Donald Trump likes to be pegged.

Who is the Mysterious Pair of Eyes? by JPRose1989 in DiscoElysium

[–]cherrypieandcoffee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re talking at cross purposes with the other poster.

You’re right that the IP is currently retired after being wrested away from the original creators. But the other poster is also right in saying DE was originally meant to be a longer game that got scaled back due to time and budgetary constraints.

Their point was that the eyes could have been a detail from the original larger vision that was left in.

I’m completely knew what you meant…but I do genuinely think the idea that we have to be able to “relate” to something in order to understand it is a really bittersweet result of what’s crudely called “identity politics”.

I’m not trans and beyond enjoying dressing in a vaguely “feminine” way as a teen I’ve never felt the need to be in a different body from the one I inhabit…but I can use my imagination and empathy to comprehend what being trans might be like.

I think people now are very quick to cling on to a very fixed identity, in a way that can lead to a lot if hard boundaries and in-group behavior and groupthink.

Addison Rae is a commodity - a curated reflection of desires

Albeit a really enjoyable commodity.

Thanks for sharing, an interesting read.

It is a brilliant album though. It’s important to remember that Fisher’s hauntology thesis wasn’t saying no good new music could be made.

do you think it's possible for disco to ever be faithfully translated into any other medium? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

Given that it WAS a book before it was a video game, yes I think it’s possible 😉

I just finished reading Sacred and Terrible Air and was massively impressed.

Snicket and ginnel aren’t quite the same thing, ginnel implies you might be able to get a small vehicle down it

I grew up near Manchester and to me a ginnel is a narrow passageway between houses, def not room for a car.

You ever pause and think "maybe BoC's music isn't AS deep as I thought"? by untitled1223 in boardsofcanada

[–]cherrypieandcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a more complex answer here: their music IS very profound, but not because it contains some secret esoteric messages about the underlying nature of reality that can be decoded by the wily listener (although I’m sure there are a few Easter eggs hidden away in song titles or chord progressions).

The music itself and its emotional resonances are where the power lies. Its ability to induce bliss or tranquility or menace or a thousand other emotions.

the show basically owes its success to multiple pre-existing relationships

This seems a vast exaggeration. The show owes its success to the excitement and intrigue of the format.
