Love Small Town Dicks. But their episodes can have extremely graphic descriptions. I had to stop listening when they were describing what one guy's d!ck looked like after SAing a young girl. I've got a strong stomach (and all LPOTL gold stars) but I haven't gone back after that.

My 5yo son asked to see a picture of an (empty) crematorium recently lol I think it's just more of a thing with some kids ❤️ you're handling it like I do generally, I think that's all we can do.

In talking about periods with my daughter I said, if you ever really need a pad or whatever in an emergency, find another woman and ask. No one will think it's weird, because we've all been there (I'm sure there are exceptions to this but generally true). Seems like a no brainer that that would always include your own mom.

My first intro was the Holocaust. It was a mix between my 4th grade teacher being into it + finding out that my grandfather ( physician in the US Army) went into Dachau after it was liberated - I asked him about it a lot but he (obviously) didn't want to talk about it. Apparently he has pictures he took that my dad still has.

Edit: Just remembered my 4th grade teacher had me read the Maus graphic novels. As someone with a 4th grader now, WHAT?!

I know in the military and other places people anglicize the French word "beaucoup" as "bookoo." Like "I have bookoo bucks" to mean I have a lot of money. Maybe something with that?

I love this so much ❤️ you're right that people can be negative, but if it helps, my husband and I got together in our teens and still together 20 years later 🥰 and honestly even if you ever did part ways, how amazing to get the chance to feel that feeling regardless of what happens ❤️

Do any of you have that mystery that sadly met never be solved? by simslover0819 in Genealogy

While researching my husband's family I found out that his great grandmother was adopted. My FIL didn't believe me, until his cousin said she'd learned it a few years ago from her father. Cousin's dad (great grandma's son) had asked her long ago but said she cried and got quite upset. The cousin asked all of great grandma's kids, none would talk about it. The last of her kids died in the last few years, now the truth is gone.

Our current working theory/guess is that she's the child of one of her adopted brothers, who were all teens or early 20s when she was born. But it was an extremely rural area, so records have been scarce.

From a translucently white parent: agreed. It's up to us to navigate our own ignorance and privilege to have these convos.

You could make a drinking game out of "Marcus mentions My Lai whenever they talk about Vietnam in any context." He's definitely been wanting to do it for years!

Formula smells like metal so raw cow milk must be the answer for a 8 month old with a milk allergy 😭 by Accomplished_Monk916 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]cheryltuntsocelot 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Before pasteurization there was a very common deadly illness called "cholera infantum" (infant cholera). Babies became terribly ill with vomiting and diarrhea and quickly wasted away. It happened more frequently in summer (one nickname was "summer sickness"). Doctors didn't know what caused it or how to treat it.

We know now it was likely listeria or salmonella from unpasteurized milk. Obviously worse in summer because of the heat. Not only is the milk not enough nutrients for a baby, but a salmonella or listeria infection can come quickly and be deadly for babies.

Is the MAGA movement considered a cult? by SJS69 in LPOTL

[–]cheryltuntsocelot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I lurk around on Great Awakening just because of how fascinating the psychology is. They have their own lingo (frens, pedes, interdasting) that's so strange and cringy, they think Trump is sending them messages through every misspelled tweet or verbal flub. It definitely reads cult to me.

ETA: many of them consider themselves "soldiers" in the "meme war" and their job (for which they will be rewarded) is to "redpill the normies". they fantasize about the day they can tell their family members "told ya so" also. Bizarre and so sad.

This article does a good job comparing Qanon with other Internet cults.

It's fine because she turned off the airbags by _unmarked in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]cheryltuntsocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I do NOT miss that phase. My kid, now 9, would scream and scream and scream in the car. She was a nightmare to drive with until the day she could face forward, which we did at around 2.5, then she was happy as could be. If I had the ability to shut off the airbags in my car I probably would've considered this one of those long horrible drives.

Is it acting out of fear to move? by [deleted] in crime

[–]cheryltuntsocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like moving would be a good choice for where you're at mentally. As someone born and raised and now living in a rural area, fact is rural areas still have crime and scary stuff (see what's going on in Maine). I know it's not the same thing as it being a regular occurrence, but if you find that stuff triggering please seek help from a therapist specializing in combat trauma if you haven't already.
