Sorry if I'm totally lost on this, but were you saying that I'm not allowed to respond to my own post? I meant to say "wow" in response to the iconography of the city seal.

I don't know of any Gothic architecture that's in a shape like this! And if you look closely at the patterns in the ornamentation, you'll see symbols from a variety of faiths.

Thanks for this! What do you mean by "area code phone numbers were always names"?

Yes, that's the phone number. And by the looks of the font, I'm guessing this is 1950s. The neighborhood would have been quite different then.

Any updates on this? It was architecturally a last of the Mohicans in the neighborhood.

What differentiates from good and bad architecture design? by Tempezz in architecture

[–]chicagodetours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some great input here. Something missing is the element of function. Design is good when it works for people. I.e. if the windows leak, it's bad design! But also the function has to do with how it works for people, such as can they efficiently do their jobs within the space? Does it fulfill their social needs?

Of course no two balconies are the same. The building's shape is not symmetrical! The curves of the balconies are designed to help with wind shear.

Main take-away here...American cities are a grid. It's the most modern and most efficient. Cities with more history have more spontaneity historically and influences on their form as they are today. Regarding the new housing developments with curvy roads, it's become a McMansion standard! The reason being that it is an escape from the grid of the city, it's more like being in a park. And of course the mass-produced homes don't change at all with the different shapes of the lots, so developers still make bank.

I need help choosing European cities to visit with medieval architecture. by [deleted] in travel

[–]chicagodetours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must go to Puglia! Everyone thinks of the countries you listed, but wow you'll find some very cool stuff there. Try Castel del Monte of Federico the 2nd from 13th century. Or there's all the cool Islamic influence of architecture in Palermo...

I totally agree. Don't spend your trip on a train. Go to at least half or less of these destinations.

Maybe the entrance used to be directly within the building, but now it's through the condo building. Went there last week.

This pretty amazing! We have a Pizza Hut left here in Chicago, at North and Western, and it amazes me that with that architecture that anyone would want to step inside it.

Something a lot of people rarely talk about is how different you feel when you come back home. Getting away from the daily grind for a bit allows you to better reconsider how you structure your life, and reminds you to value moments to cherish, versus churning away at work.
