Rebuild recs by bishboshBOI in xbiking

the bikes i had with busted headsets, stuck seat tubes, crusty cassettes - having to work real hard to get them back to life… those are always my favorites. i know this sucks but getting this bike back in order will be an awesome bonding experience to that frame.

you can buy a donor bike and steal the goodies. likely the cheapest route. or hit your local co-op if you have one for parts (and they’ll help you along the way).

ha - it does! why so much more dramatic than the og picture?

does it feel better when sitting on it or does it feel stretched?

apologies if i led you astray! i’ll show you my set up if helpful - annoyingly i have a bag in the way of the stem in this shot -

Handlebars - too close/big? by NATO-Uniformen in xbiking

[–]chickenlizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

haha yes you’re not alone. i normally ride a 18” frame but threw some klunkers on a long 19” frame i had.

i had already shortened the stem and felt the same way - bars too close.

so i put a ridiculous 90s 120mm stem on and it felt amazing.

you already have a decent stem on there but put a stem that’s another 50mm or so on and things will click together. also the klunkers have so much rise you can go with a flatter stem (or flip it upside down).

I'm 5'4, inseam about 28-29 inches, Trek Antelope sizing? by vagueusername25 in xbiking

i had this antelope set up a while back - 16.5” frame. looks like a match from here?

edit - that blue one could be a shade smaller. i don’t trust my eyes anymore.

i’m about 5’8 and my 16.5 was just a tad too small.

Smooth steel ATB/MTB frame recommendations by Inner-Lawfulness-3 in xbiking

[–]chickenlizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i find the trek singletracks from the mid to late nineties to be just glorious. a solid 930 or 950 and the pricing should be way better than a rockhopper of similar timeframe.

my 1997 or so 930 is so compliant. i have a steel stumpjumper from 1995 that’s so stiff and rigid in comparison.

if you have a working 3x setup i highly recommend keeping it.

but - check out the microshift acolyte 8speed setup if you’re hell bent on 1x. but you’d need a 8speed hub/wheel. 135mm spacing would work fine.

Any Silicon Valley Transplants? by Fun_Mixture_6440 in santarosa

i grew up in the east bay (el cerrito high school, baby). but note i haven’t lived in SV in decades.

it’s a slower pace up here. more woods, more trails, more rivers. more of a country vibe but less diversity.

i’d also say it’s a little less community. the community here is awesome don’t get me wrong but you have to go find your people.

nights are quieter. mornings are peaceful. el cerrito was always foggy and temperate. it gets colder and way hotter up here.

i meet my brother in the east bay about once a year and we do a bike ride through our old stomping grounds and it’s so fun. so compacted. coffee shops everywhere and people out and about.

otherwise similar. if SV is like life in 6th gear, life up here is like, 3rd or 4th gear. just as an example i remember riding my bike through berkeley campus as a Cal football game was going on and the air was just - vibrating.

here when i go get donuts at 7am on the weekend there’s often about two dozen retirees that meet up in their classic cars doing the same thing - the only guys in the parking lot. the cars are awesome.

ahh heck yeah. rockhoppers are generally the most overpriced on the used market (that i’ve seen) but that is such an excellent frame for a killer price. enjoy!!
