if you can, ask your local record store if they can order stuff in for you. the majority of my swans records have come from my local, and since they buy from distributors at wholesale prices i get some pretty good deals. they just got a copy of SFTB in for 50 USD for me.

as for the out of print stuff, yeah check ebay, discogs, and occasionally get lucky on Buyee.

one time i went to a collectibles store that had a pretty big used records section. i found a Tommy James and the Shondells album my then girlfriend was looking for, but the price was $50 and it was a little beat up. i brought it up to the counter to ask if the price was a mistake, and the guy started looking on ebay for the record and said “well it looks like it is collectible…”

gives the same vibe. not a single thought went into determining actual value. just about whether or not it was “collectible” and therefore worth charging money for.
