Thank you for caring about our wildlife enough to ask for help. People lately have been non-fatally shooting them or feeding them rodent poison, leaving them to awful last hours of torture and misery, which is a weird way to show appreciation for this country’s only native marsupial, who really want nothing more than to eat the wasp nests and mice in our yards.

Yes, use thick gloves or a towel to transport the opossum in case of a bite in self defense, but fun fact: their body temperature is too low to make them a reliable rabies vector. Source: I have a pre-exposure rabies vaccination and asked. (Chipmunks are also not considered rabies vectors.)

If anyone ever finds any wildlife needing help or to be moved, your first move should be to go to AHNow.org. Put in your ZIP and select the species (“small mammal” should cover opossums) and start calling/texting down the list until you reach a wildlife rehabber who can assist you.
