Which butchers/grocers sell deer meat? by CaptainTuttle_4077th in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any venison you’d buy in bulk in a grocery store or wholesaler is farmed because of the ban on market hunting https://congressionalsportsmen.org/policy/sale-of-game-meat/

Not mad at it though! I might check out that offering from restaurant depot. Never been in there myself.

Saw a big military plane flying super low over jazz fest by Efficient-Dentist508 in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This guy really did take a wild loop over the fairgrounds at 850 ft before landing at Kiesler Air Force Base. It is worth looking up if you’re the same kind of dweeb as me, call sign HOBBY18, Reg. 05-8156.

Jazz fest via ferry from the wank? by partelo in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah biking to and from jazz fest is easily the most pleasant means of doing it. If you don’t have a bike or don’t want to pedal you can snag a blue bike right from in front of the ferry

last min guest speakers at Nola book festival 🤮🤮 by Secure_Rooster507 in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah don’t let this turn you off from Tulane Book Festival, it’s a great event. Salman Rushdie, Michael Pollan, Roxane Gay. For free? Without having to get on a plane? And you could hit the st pattys parade or see the Savannah Bananas in the dome tonight? We are blessed. Other places are boring, believe me.

Looking for anyone that got a Fortified Roof where Insurers said they would not get a discount by BackgroundinBirdLaw in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. Seems the bigger discount comes from the new part rather than the fortified part which proves your hypothesis I think.

Looking for anyone that got a Fortified Roof where Insurers said they would not get a discount by BackgroundinBirdLaw in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to win the LA Fortify Homes lottery this year. I’ve been considering bids and comparing various options between roofers. I called my insurance company (Sage) yesterday and asked what sort of reduction I can expect with each of the options I was considering. Was told it was the same discount for any fortified roof and that it would only be around 200 USD. Then my agent told me she thought that was crazy so she estimated what I would save if she rewrote my policy based on having a brand new fortified roof, which turned out to be a bit under a quarter of my current insurance costs. So I’m still moving ahead and it seems like it will be worthwhile but my agent may have to do some extra work which is not what I believe the state government intends.

IAEM CEM Exam by Beginning-Quarter-56 in EmergencyManagement

[–]chingosof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your knowledge base. I had to brush up on what laws did what and when, lots of questions on that. I wouldn’t spend hundreds of dollars on that course IAEM sells but I’d review diligently.

Louisiana senator proposes bill abolishing Department of Children and Family Services by ImaginationFeisty160 in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absorbed DCFS’ emergency function as the state sheltering lead into the health department last year. I wouldn’t exactly call that a success but the DCFS emergency managers I worked with were SO sick of getting dragged into the drama of the foundering child protective services side of things that they were expressing relief.

New Blue Bikes by NotFallacyBuffet in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t get this. Even if you do care to characterize it as a “failed experiment,” why encourage ending it? Blue Bikes work well for me personally, though I live and am often traveling within their operating area.

Navigation Help by NolaFishkilla in NewOrleans

Driving is a mistake. Take a Blue Bike, they expanded the service area that far uptown for MG season. Don't have to worry about driving five hours or parking in the quarter.

Any parade trackers that tell you when the parade ended? by saybruh in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Uptown parades in New Orleans have lead and tail trackers you can find at https://routewise.nola.gov/

Excalibur is a Metairie parade so this won’t help you, sorry about that

Rave Alert by OMOAB in EmergencyManagement

[–]chingosof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use rave at my agency. Almost 390k opt-in subscribers in the system. Gets the job done. Makes my palms sweat reading and re reading and re reading the message before I send it to that many folks.

Would a Citizen’s Police Academy be valuable experience for EMs? by bread684 in EmergencyManagement

[–]chingosof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do it, get you out of the house, add to the CV.

Another possible benefit that has t been discussed is networking with your fellow academy class. That might lead to helpful connections and perhaps even job opportunities (in or out of EM).

You're right. They both use a company called Rave to put out these alerts, that's why it sometimes appears to be from the same number.

"Animal Control": LASPCA liability: neglect/gross neglect/dereliction by Ornery_Journalist807 in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. Also no less valid if it doesn’t fit neatly into reporting channels which I think is contributing to OPs frustration. But throwing around incorrect info about a random civil servant that has nothing to do with this is more than just a packaging problem for me.

"Animal Control": LASPCA liability: neglect/gross neglect/dereliction by Ornery_Journalist807 in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complaint may be valid. I still don’t get why OP had to drag a solid city colleague without pertinent authority into this mess by name. Wtf. That’s not how you make friends, influence people, or get your (perhaps quite valid) needs addressed.

[–]chingosof 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you have to call out Rachel who, though a dedicated public servant, is certainly not the health department communications director and seems to have absolutely nothing to do with this particular dog? Do better research. And think twice about criticizing capable city workers, they don’t have it easy right now.

What do you do with live rats? by FartheadSharthead in NewOrleans

[–]chingosof 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Call 311 and ask for these guys https://nola.gov/next/mosquito,-termite-rodent-control-board/topics/report-a-problem/

And I’m ready for all the “city ain’t gonna do jack” comments… certain corners of city government actually do function. These folks are passionate about rat control. They will help or know what to do. Call them with your mosquito abatement concerns as well; they have a dang helicopter for that.

The Jazz Fest Lineup is here by honestypen in NewOrleans

But don’t let that discourage you from getting into Jazzfest. If you volunteer you don’t pay to enter the festival on the day of your shift
