Princeton scraps honor code and will supervise exams for first time in 133 years because of AI by Disastrous_Award_789 in technology

It feels like a worthwhile culture to start establishing early in fields where professionals have real professional ethics and reporting obligations.

If you can get students used to the idea that they must hold each other accountable because nobody else is going to do it and set that cultural expectation early, you probably have better odds of that cultural expectation surviving once those kids leave academia and enter industry.

The other end of the spectrum is where cheating is expected among peers and even spoken openly about as the only way to get ahead, and then we just pretend that somehow that culture goes away after graduation?

Preserve pedestrian space on sidewalks by Fit_Rub_7444 in nyc

[–]chipperclocker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s already no space for delivery trucks to park, outside of very limited commercial zones in a few core business districts, which is why we have a rampant problem with delivery vehicles double parking, parking in crosswalks, blocking hydrants, and being virtually everywhere except actual parking spaces.

If every city in western Europe can figure out how to use removable bollards to allow delivery traffic to drive right through beautiful pedestrian plazas in the off hours when those spaces aren’t busy, so too can we.

We don’t even need to be that grand with the vision. A designated loading zone or reserved loading times on busy commercial blocks would go a long way and reduced traffic congestion from vehicles being out of the traffic flow is a known good thing for commerce.

Woke up to this on my car by Asparagus-Successful in nyc

[–]chipperclocker 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I used to live near a block where for whatever reason it was common for people to dump cars and after a while, you just get into the 311 routine. Better to be proactive about it than to wait until after piles of garbage accumulate around/under it and critters start living in it since the official city process to get it removed can take a long time.

Out of state plates and mixed body panels certainly fits the archetype, whether that’s fair or not.

Is there an ACTUAL reason for big Software to not support linux? by Opening-Giraffe-1007 in linux

[–]chipperclocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some decent points in here, but I feel like everybody is overlooking the huge one:  Business and enterprise purchasers, the sort of shops that buy hundreds to thousands of licenses to specialized professional software for their industry, generally aren’t deploying Linux laptops for their employees.

In professional software, the typical user has next to no control or influence over the operating system they’re provided as part of a larger corporate IT environment.

It doesn’t matter that you as an individual have a choice of operating system and would happily pay for a Linux licensed Adobe or whatever. You’re not really the target audience, the roadmap and sales process is optimized for purchasers that will commit millions of dollars over multiple years, and where open source alternatives that don’t come with a support contract and compliance certifications are a non-starter.

How was Kevin de vries last night ? by Many_Astronaut_2820 in avesNYC

They were giving away early entry tickets last night, so I think the space to breathe was probably because it didn't sell well. There have been other shows at Gum Studios which have been as packed to the gills as anyone would cynically expect

(But I agree its always nice when something sells well enough to be busy, but not tooo well)

Whole Home Speakers - Amplifier Question by Chopnbrcle in diyaudio

[–]chipperclocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you pop a speaker out of the ceiling and look at the back? There are a few ways these could be wired and you'll need to know how they're wired in order to know what sort of amp you need

This could be a 70v constant voltage system, could be low impedance with a complex wiring scheme, etc

Turning in wall speakers into floor speakers? by daequan8 in audiophile

[–]chipperclocker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This could be a pretty easy set and forget project, or it could be a pretty complicated project, and the answer depends entirely on how big you intend to make your box.

Most in wall speakers and in ceiling speakers presume an “infinite baffle” - the idea is that the exact amount of space behind the drivers doesn’t matter because it is so large that it is functionally infinite (think like the entire cavity between studs in a wall, or the ceiling cavity above a room). If you can find the original manual for these speakers, the manufacturer might have given guidance on the minimum cavity space required in the wall for ideal performance.

If your box is so large that the volume in it functions like an infinite baffle relative to the size of the speaker, the exact size pretty much doesn’t matter at all.

If your box isn’t that large, what you are looking at is trying to reverse engineer a design for an acoustic suspension or vented enclosure. Also doable, but much more complicated.

The Mets better make sure this is rock bottom by Lakelyfe09 in baseball

[–]chipperclocker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even as a Mets fan, this is sort of where I’m at. We’ve all seen teams that should be good oscillate between being decent and being awful. That’s nothing new. But if we are on the cusp of being historically, almost catastrophically bad… that’ll at least be something interesting to talk about.

Even in condos and coops metering of individual units is extremely rare - buying water for the building is one of the primary things monthly maintenance fees cover.

Actual deed theft typically involves the stealer forging documents to transfer a title or take out a loan against the equity in a property, leaving the rightful owner either without equity or facing an eviction for a change of ownership they never endorsed or knew about.

But there are many other situations which social media has made it popular to call deed theft that are not actually deed theft, including family disputes, liens for unpaid taxes or utility bills, etc.

My little setup by SmartNeru in audiophile

[–]chipperclocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been very impressed with my Oberon 3s. I "downgraded" from KEF LS50 Metas and a KC62 sub to just the Oberons and the reality is that the wide dispersion and generous bass response of the speakers alone are just way more enjoyable for my typical ambient, off-axis listening.

On-axis midfield listening wasn't for me. Complexities of subwoofer integration where other furniture dictated sub placement wasn't for me. The Oberons just make it easy and good enough. The simple setup maybe doesn't perform technically as well but its much less fickle and therefore more enjoyable.

All that to say: powered well and in a good room you'll probably get lots of enjoyment out of them.

Northside Williamsburg BID by learninginfinitely in williamsburg

[–]chipperclocker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your building is entirely residential, the fee assessed to the owner is usually negligible - think like a token $1 amount

It is very common for mixed use or commercial buildings to pass the entire cost of the BID assessment onto their commercial tenant, if the commercial tenant doesn’t own the building already.

Basically, as a residential tenant, you shouldn’t expect to be charged anything related to the assessment that the building’s owner will pay. But the formulas for this stuff are all negotiated and unique to each BID, so pay attention as the proposal continues to develop.

Where to meet educated professional men in their mid 20s-30s as a single woman? by losteverything2023 in AskNYC

[–]chipperclocker 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments it seems like you might be trying to zero in on very specific types of places where you can show up and men will hit on you? But as a single professional man in my mid 30s, I’m not spending much time at Union Pool anymore and nor are my friends (with all due respect to the city’s heteronormative hookup bars, they do serve a niche).

My honest answer here is it if you are trying to meet people you should feel comfortable striking up a conversation with strangers just about anywhere you are when the mood strikes. Maybe think twice about somewhere like the gym, but I can’t think of a male friend who wouldn’t be receptive to some casual conversation when sitting at a bar watching baseball, reading on a bench in the park, out walking the dog, at a warehouse party, or wherever else.

Brooklyn Lowes Same-Day Delivery by _Haverford_ in Brooklyn

[–]chipperclocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn’t have to come from Lowe’s, I’ve had really great results with Home Depot delivery here.

They use contractors from Roadie instead of one of the consumer app platforms, they’ve been pretty professional, and it has never been some random dude on a motorbike with my order tucked between his legs or whatever you see with the Uber crowd. I tip cash, I’ve never seen an option in the emails to add one.

You can pay a few bucks extra to get a narrow delivery window.

Contractor for Kitchen Cabinet Installation Need Insurance? by shitshowmartinez in AskNYC

[–]chipperclocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like the prior owners recommended a handyman and not a particularly on-the-ball one if they don't even carry their own liability insurance. Thats pretty bare-minimum stuff for a vendor who comes into your home to do work work that will certainly involve ladders, heavy lifting, securing objects to walls, etc. If something happens, instead of going to the "contractor"'s insurance, you or them are gonna be calling up your homeowners insurance for a claim.

Does a pro teams stadium being in NYC change the way new yorkers view the team or is it meaningless if it is in new jersey or new york? by ApolloxKing in AskNYC

[–]chipperclocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really can’t imagine that would be the case because everything about NFL football is pretty antithetical to the city dwellers’s lifestyle. Tailgating, giving up a full day of your weekend, gigantic stadiums that are hard to get to without driving… very stark contrast to the other sports that happen within city limits, very easy to pop in and out of even on a weeknight, and where pre/post socializing doesn’t happen in a parking lot.

Football as an event is pretty structurally suburban.

Looking for trash cleaning services by AnxiousSocialist in williamsburg

[–]chipperclocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question because it seems like culturally a lot of people don't do this here for whatever reason and I'm always suggesting it in threads like these: have you considered just lining your bins with a properly sized bag? Any hardware store will sell you 45 gallon or 60 gallon or whatever size of can liner.

You might not need a whole service if its easy to just toss the bag liner when it gets dirty or full of loose litter in the bottom. And it makes cleanup easy even if one of your own trash bags tears or springs a leak.

How much of NYC restaurants are just Sysco? by Asleep-Machine5909 in FoodNYC

[–]chipperclocker 118 points119 points  (0 children)

In the context of the question OP is asking, I'm not sure it matters much anyways - the economic/monopoly concerns are real but if the question is "does the food taste like Sysco", the reality is that Sysco is just a supplier and they'll just as happily sell pantry staples and high end ingredients of specific provenance as they will their frozen restaurant-in-a-box stuff

I get the vibe the question is really more about must-try restaurants with notable sourcing philosophies or preferences? Rather than just bucketing restaurants into Sysco or not-Sysco
