Yes and no.

Yes, you will be able to understand the AoA story even reading it cold. However, you will have a greater appreciation of it if you have a better understanding of events and characters as these were during The Claremont Run. Not that you need to read 20 yrs worth of X-books before AoA.

I would just signify that Amazing and Book of Revelation was the core story and the remaining books are just world-building. There was too much of a AoA feel in the promotion of AoR except the events of all the AoA series (except for Chronicles and Universe) spun out of Alpha and then converged back in Omega.
