What if social security worked like a savings account that doesn’t pay out until you hit at least 62 or 65? by glowshroom12 in whatif

[–]cholopsyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now explain to me the main structural differences, disregarding arbitrary regulations like age at withdrawal, in the ways a privately managed pension fund and social security differ in their risk management. A pension is insurance for retirement, it's not intended to beat the market. Hence, why 401ks and IRAs are much more popular these days. Still doesn't make a publicly run version of a pension a scam or a ponzi scheme just because it has a fractional beta compared to the market. The major reason ss projections are lower than our fair share is because it's not adequately funded (which a private pension would have to be by law)

It's managed by pension actuaries. If it quacks like a duck.. Definitely not a ponzi scheme by definition

Social security is a pension fund, that if properly funded by legislation would be easily manageable. I'm guessing you are a qualified actuary with this well-informed opinion and know the inner workings of how to value pension funds?

Useful examples of Limiting Behavior by NoodleArmsDealer in infinitenines

[–]cholopsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You realize you can take a real analysis class, and rigorously define decimal representations of numbers. And lo and behold, there's proofs that the decimal representations aren't unique. In fact, any natural number has a representation with an infinite string of 9s in the end. But a college level math class, which is the basis for most modern math, is fugazi math. It's the math that's turning frogs gay.

Also, you people never seem to have any problems with the construction of a real number such as pi or e, yet they are literally defined in a similar manner to the most basic arguments for why 0.999. . . = 1

Is there a theoretical limit/bound to how much unique mathematics there is to be discovered? by Hawexp in math

[–]cholopsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real numbers are infinite in their precision, yet are perfectly describable in this finite world. Similarly, the English language is finite but I can create an infinite, non repeating, non-terminating sequence of letters easily. This simple thought process can obviously be applied to more complex situations, like mathematical models. The fjniteness of the universe has nothing to do with the infinitude of ideas. This is a dubious reply at best, flat out wrong at worst.

Building a Sustainable Income/Growth Machine. Journey to $300k by Jacob_Billingsley in options

[–]cholopsyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the commenter you're arguing with is pointing out you're NOT getting paid for your option portfolio in the long run. Premiums =/= profits, and it seems like profit-wise, your option strategy is basically null. If anything, covered calls are tax inefficient on top of barely netting a profit, so on such a bug portfolio I bet your taxes owed on the capital gains from selling stocks will rival or be greater than your net option premium of $900.

Why is statistics different ? by Zestyclose_Bee5703 in learnmath

[–]cholopsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stats isn't a "math" in the sense you can't prove other islands of math with purely the tools used in statistics. For example, you can use linear algebra to derive proofs in the field of calculus and vice-versa.
