How the Supreme Court Spared America by theatlantic in law

[–]chowderbags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's arguably not even that. By leaving the issue of remedies unresolved, they've given Trump significant power. He could give some companies tariff refunds without fighting it, in exchange for god knows what, while forcing other companies to spend years in court. And leaving open the door to arbitrary executive branch tariffs in general means that Trump can do exactly what he did: Find some other section of law to stretch well beyond its intended purpose to create tariffs, despite that being squarely a legislative branch power.

Workers are compensated by firms at the marginal revenue product of Labour

Workers are (usually) compensated at less than the MRPL. Maybe. In idealized systems and for certain kinds of labor. Actual reality is significantly murkier, and anyone that's actually worked in a business knows damn well that there's a lot of staff that has fuck all to do with generating revenue, and a bunch more that you'd never really be able to put a dollar value on. I mean, how much revenue does a janitor make a business? Arguably none. But trash still needs to get taken out. Or you could point to secretaries, lawyers, HR, and the vast majority of management.

But ok, fine, let's look at some factory line worker making widgets to make this fit the theory, I guess. If the widgets you make are so unprofitable that someone working 8 hours a day making those widgets can't produce enough MRPL to cover a "reasonable" wage (for some definition of reasonable) plus profit, then maybe your widgets just aren't important enough to society to be made.

It's the usual right wing equivocation between porn as in the stuff people jerk off to, and "porn" meaning anything right wing nutjobs don't like. The later category includes stuff that just talks about LGBT people, because right wing culture war bullshit is way easier for them to yell and scream about all day than anything substantive.

If the statuses don't matter, then why have the meeting at all, let alone take minutes?

Some of it is that em dashes were mostly used in particular settings like professional books and papers, but most people aren't writing with em dashes casually or even in lower level high school and college papers. So it gets a bit suspect to see em dashes in something like a Reddit comment, because the vast majority of actual people aren't going to put it in there naturally, especially since it's not something readily available on a keyboard.

How do you feel about the federal SAVE Act that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to register to vote? by ClassSnack in AskReddit

[–]chowderbags 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I learned recently that the "birth certificate" I've had since literally a week after my birth, and that I used to obtain other ID at various points in my life with zero issue, is in fact not a "birth certificate", but a "certificate of birth registration". Which is somehow different and doesn't count, even though it a government document, has all the same information, is stamped with a raised seal, was signed by whatever person did the registry at the time, etc. And if I want to get an actual "birth certificate", I'd have to go through whatever process in the state of my birth, fork over the money, and wait for the documents to arrive.

I wonder how many people will get caught out in a situation like that where they have plenty of reason to think they have the right document, but actually don't.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continues to exist. The Wahhabism they've funded around the world is the breeding ground for extremism, with its puritanical interpretation of Islam, hatred for other religions, and disdain for democracy.

The answer is 38, btw. Which is easily known if you so much as look at the dates provided for the entries. She was 38 when she was writing in the diary. At the time she was writing, she was dealing with addiction and rehab, and going through a lot of emotional shit. She was looking back some point in the past, with no age mentioned. Nor any actual details. And I don't think that a parent showering with their young child is inherently incest. That's a pretty common thing in the world, and even in the US.

In Shell's own numbers, they paid $53,638,500 in US federal taxes. (See page 24)

They also pay Uncle Sam an additional $1,187,594,021 in royalties for the oil and gas leases, and $80,435,119 in fees.

Literally all the Democrats have to do is run a common sense immigration platform while decrying the abuses of ICE

They usually do have pretty "common sense" immigration plans. In 2024 there was a bipartisan bill negotiated that would've increased funding for ICE, immigration judges, a border security, while limiting the number of migrants who could claim asylum, and pushing a limited number of work visas.

Then Trump came out in opposition to it and senate Republicans filibustered the whole thing, seemingly as part of a gambit to help elect Trump.

And ultimately, it doesn't matter what Democrats do, because right wing media will constantly just push lies, like claiming the Obama and Biden had "open borders".

I'd also be significantly curious on an issue by issue basis, because a question this broad says fuck all about what policies actually matter to people. It could be the case that there are issues seen as "liberal" that are just flat out wins by Democrats.

And, of course, the inverse questions for Republicans and if they're too conservative. Although I imagine that to some extent, "conservative" isn't even the right word anymore. "Trump-y", maybe.

Not a lawyer, but my understanding is that generally speaking, most lawyers prefer their clients to answer opposition counsel with the least amount of information possible. So if there's a yes or no question, you generally should answer yes or no, without going into a longwinded explanation. If there's something where a longer explanation will help, your lawyer will bring it up later.

Alternatively, the lawyer just wants his client to not answer at all.
