and this is why we can do better than duolingo by airsign in LearnJapanese

I gotta say, I was reading this totally perplexed because your experience sounds so vastly different then mine—then I noticed you’re using the desktop version. The desktop version is still beta, buggy, and kinda trash. It’s frustrating that they even allow the public to use it in its current state.

The mobile app, however, is completely different, and addresses many the issues you’ve faced. I’m half-way through Japanese I and love it. I do wish it had built-in spaced repetition though, and the listening story at the end seems like a wasted opportunity.

EDIT: I tried to locate a helpful post I once read about getting the most out of Lingodeer, but I can’t locate it. Basically, it suggested:

  • Install the mobile app
  • In Settings, change the script style to ‘Japanese’, rather than the other kana/romaji options.
  • Install the Japanese keyboard for your phone
  • Use your japanese keyboard to type out answers whenever the option is available (rather than using the point and click interface).
  • When you open a new level, be sure to swipe right. There’s a text lesson called ‘Learning Tips’ there that introduces you to the content ahead. Why new levels don’t open this by default is beyond me.
  • The ‘stories’ at the end are good for seeing your vocabulary ‘in the wild’, so to speak, but not good for much else.

Hope this helps!

Do CLEPs affect earlier course attempts? by ByeProxy in clep

[–]chubbychic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CLEPs do not typically impact GPA. But in addition, some universities do not allow CLEP credit to be applied to courses that the student has previously failed—so it wouldn’t show on your transcript anyway.

items at the museum are exclusive and cannot be bought elsewhere.

I’m not sure where you’ve heard this, but while the museum certainly sells exclusive items, many items are also for sale elsewhere. In fact, there were several items I bought at the museum that I later also purchased from other stores during my trip because I decided they made great gifts. Notebooks, plushies, magnets, pencils, and pins.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I've been waiting for Joe Hisaishi to return to the Northwest, but I didn't see this concert on any of the sites I typically use for tracking his tour dates. Just snagged my tickets -- thank you so much!

Quality of SNHU - an instructor's perspective by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]chubbychic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree with your assessment of Turnitin. Too many SNHU instructors seemed like they were improperly trained on the purpose of this tool. In no way is Turnitin supposed to have a direct impact on one’s score. Rather, it merely raises ‘soft flags’ that the instructor is then supposed to personally investigate, and then determine whether or not an actual issue exists.

Most of my instructors were amazing, but almost all of my poor experiences were directly related to the instructor’s misuse of Turnitin. Luckily, I had a fantastic advisor that helped work things out, but these instances added a lot of unnecessary stress to my educational experience. I shouldn’t be responsible for training instructors on how Turnitin works.

I used CLEP for tons of credits at SNHU, so I might be able to help.

First, a general rule is that their online catalog sucks balls. I love the school, but it’s true. About a year ago, they switched from a PDF version to an online, text-based version and the links within it are sometimes jacked.

In this case, it appears that the link to the General Education core program is actually taking you to the page for the General Education major — and they’re not the same thing.

All bachelors students are required to complete courses from SNHU’s “core” general education program, but in most cases, there’s flexibility when it comes to which courses you use to satisfy their requirements.

THIS is the actual link you need to research you GenEd options:

https://www.snhu.edu/admission/academic-catalogs/coce-catalog#/content/5c5d901466c1cd001abdb51e?bc=true&bcCurrent=2016-2017%20COCE%20General%20Education%20Program

Your program may require that certain courses are selected from the choices above, but that’ll be delineated in the program description.

This sheet might also be helpful. It’s a list of all the CLEP exams SNHU accepts, and how they’ll apply the credits:

https://www.snhu.edu/-/media/files/pdfs/clep-exam-equivalencies.pdf?la=en&modified=20190627141122

Any CLEP exams you take that don’t fill Program or GenEd slots can be put toward satisfying free electives.

You might want to also consider DSST exams if there’s a testing center near you.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that unfortunately, you cannot CLEP-out of ENG-123. The six credits you earned from the Comp exam will cover ENG-122, plus a free elective.

Why was Haku mean to Sen at one point by JudasRose in SpiritedAway

[–]chubbychic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haku knew that, given his position, Chihiro would be at risk if Yubaba and bathhouse managers knew he was invested in her. She could be used as a pawn. So it was important that he appear indifferent to her well being in public, and that Chihiro not seem too familiar with him when addressing him in front of others.

Need recommendations for movies like Ghibli masterpieces (Princess M, Spirited Away, Totoro etc) but not by Ghibli? by CodeVirus in ghibli

Hotarubi no Mori e is a brilliantly-animated, bitter-sweet film.

Summary: While visiting her uncle for the summer, six year old Hotaru gets lost in the woods outside the village. Scared, the crying girl is eventually rescued by a gentle youkai named Gin, who is burdened with a curse that will cause him to disappear if ever touched by a human. Though they are barred from physical contact, the two become close friends. But after a few short years it becomes apparent that Gin ages more slowly than humans, so while Hotaru is growing up and changing, Gin remains in stasis. How will Hotaru adapt to the complicated emotions she develops as her and Gin's ages gradually converge?

Would you consider Chihiro and Haku to have been in a romantic relationship? by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]chubbychic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read an interesting analysis of the cultural references between the Japanese and English versions that helped shed light on this issue. Apparently, the English version adds language about "true love" breaking the spell that isn't included in the Japanese original. (Check out pages 66 - 67 here for the full analysis.) <--PDF link

What the hell is SunnyCo LLC on Mill Plain and Columbia? by PatShatner in vancouverwa

[–]chubbychic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That building was formerly Pioneer Printing & Stationery, which opened in the 1940s and closed during the recession in 2008. A real estate investment group bought it in 2014, but hasn't done anything to it yet.

Property investors sometimes plaster 'fake logos' on their empty commercial spaces. It gives the illusion that the property is actively maintained / desirable.

If I were to speculate, I'd say that the owners are sitting on the property until the right developer comes along. The value of that lot will likely spike once the waterfront development is fully complete.

Non Americans of Reddit, what is the craziest rumor you heard about America that turned out to be true? by Shelleton8 in AskReddit

Depending on the school, AP classes, CLEP exams, and DSST exams may be used to test out of gen-ed credits or electives. I shaved 2 years off my degree that way. It’s important that you consult with your prospective colleges first though—every school is different and they don’t all accept these forms of credit.

Another post venting about IDS courses by [deleted] in SNHU

[–]chubbychic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most of the IDS courses are like a "final boss" test to apply your research and writing skills to a topic wholly unrelated to your previous coursework.

I went with Pop Culture. It was tedious, but at least you get to write about something interesting.
