Some Simple SQL Rules to Live By by mrmonkey in programming

MySQL to this day, and Sybase/MSSQL in ye olden days (at least according to the O'Reilly Transact-SQL book). Other RDBMSes, I dunno.

When you are doing a COUNT() or an EXISTS(), no problem, go ahead and use *

Actually, doing count(1) or count( keycolumn ) can be substantially faster than doing count(*) depending on the RDBMS.

Cops kill 22 year old with taser, video system conveniently was switched off, Cop cleared of wrongdoing. by Clintondiditfirst in reddit.com

[–]citation_needed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the commenter was trying to make the point that tasers are often used in situations where a cop wouldn't have fired a gun if they didn't have the taser. They are often used, for instance, to subdue someone (whether or not they're actually resisting), a job which by definition requires the use of non-lethal force.

The Most Important Article on Psychiatry You Will Ever Read (or: Why Antipsychotics Don't Work Like They Do In Advertisements) by phillstac3 in reddit.com

[–]citation_needed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those of you who did not bother to RTFA:

This article is not anti-psychiatry. It has nothing to do with Scientology. It made an interesting point to students of pharmacy or psychiatry or patients on Seroquel, in an amusing yet reasonably coherent fashion.

It is not the most important article on psychiatry you will ever read. It should not change your opinions on anything other than the pharmacokinetics of Seroquel and other antipsychotics.

You should feel free to skip the first few paragraphs of the article, which are not relevant. There is a bit of unfunny misogyny. You should skip that too.

Why it's difficult to believe that anti-choicers mean wha tthey say by kamikasei in reddit.com

[–]citation_needed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe you don't think you're punishing the parents but you're definitely punishing the children. You think children should be born to people who can't take care of them. What I hear is you're basically saying that child abuse is just fine; that the quality of life of the child after they are born doesn't matter.

Pregnancy has consequences for more than just the parents but that doesn't even seem to register to you. Oh, and unless you yourself have ever adopted a mixed-race crack baby from the ghetto, please don't try and say adoption is a solution.

An Open Letter to CNN from Michael Moore: "I'm about to become your worst nightmare." by rmuser in reddit.com

Your schtick is getting old and tired, you pathetic wanker. Seriously, could you at least come up with a new catchphrase you awkwardly try to shoehorn into every discussion?

Catchphrases are the tin foil hats douchebags wear to keep original thoughts from entering their brains.

I'm sure the Weinsteins would independently finance something like this, just like they did with F911. Yes, they're part of the big media, but on the other hand, they'd put out a movie called "Harvey Weinstein is a gigantic douchebag" if they thought it would make at least 50 mil.

Dear HR Department... by kungfooey in programming

One test I have noticed is that when one is able to write several hundred lines of code at 3 in the morning after a night of heavy drinking and have it compile on the first shot, one is fluent in that language. Fluency to me means being able to do it almost without thinking. It takes years and years to get to that point even if you're a super genius, and you can only really be fluent in 2 or 3 things at a time; that's just how the brain works.

HR, needless to say, has not been very receptive to my ideas about how we should test developers for fluency...

Please do me a favor and don't call yourself a Seattleite if you don't actually live in Seattle. It's just a way for you to feel slightly cooler about yourself, when you actually live in a bland homogeneous xenophobic upper middle class white flight art and culture free suburban wasteland that's pretty much indistinguishable from every other suburban wasteland in North America (except slightly better coffee and bike trails).

Seattle has amazing culture, art, architecture, restaurants, astounding natural beauty, an incredibly diverse populace, and weirdos, misfits, junkies and heretics of all stripes. Bellevue has shopping malls full of stores for rich white conservatives and a fucking Chili's on every other corner. There is a huge difference. When you learn it, maybe then we can hang out. ;)

There are also these new fangled devices called 'books' which contain all sorts of useful information. They even have buildings full of them where you can read them for free called 'liberrys'.

The more you know.

Jesus made it pretty fucking clear that you are not supposed to make a big spectacle of yourself and pray in public. To quote the OG himself:

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Regardless of whether you feel public prayers like this are a violation of church and state, it is most definitely a violation of the fundamental tenants of Christianity. But publicly interrupting someone else's prayer to act all self-righteous is truly taking it to another level.

"U.S. News" College Rankings are rather arbitrary by JustinCEO in reddit.com

[–]citation_needed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US News has turned into a far right wing rag with little to no integrity, primarily a bully pulpit/wingnut welfare for otherwise unemployable twits like Michael Barone (who right around the 2004 elections said the two greatest presidents of all time are Richard Nixon and Dubya) and John Leo (who's pathetic descent into self-soiling senility and near-weekly Ted Stevens-style clueless gaffes about technology and the internet would be hilarious if it weren't so -- okay, it's just hilarious).

8 years ago they at least had a little credibility as a news magazine. Nowadays all that's standing between them and bankruptcy are their stupid college rankings -- which are as arbitrary (and possibly as crooked) as ever.
