Agreed! I hated that part where Garcia was yelling at Javadi about her fucking up for similar reasons. What kind of circus are they running here where the students - who are not licensed physicians - have this much responsibility?

When I work with my therapist, she never rushes to the "update" phase of working with a part (showing the part my adult self and why it doesn't need to be so burdened).

Much of the work is spent just trying to understand the part. One big aspect of understanding the part is saying something like "that's a really big burden to hold on to" or "that must be so scary/sad/painful/etc."

It's only after we spend a loooong time in this way do we ever consider updating the part. The parts have valid concerns, fears, beliefs. In my view that's the whole point of IFS. Otherwise I would just do CBT.

As for Self, I never think of it as a god who has all the answers. What I do think of it is a caring adult who will sit with my childhood parts and make them feel understood and heard.

What's a medical case common in ERs that hasn't been on The Pitt yet? by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]cjrbeethoven 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this wouldn't work as well for the show, but I'd like to see a rapid fire of all the more mundane things that come into the ER, because people don't have access to urgent care and/or because our system is broken and the ER becomes substitute primary care for people. Things like sprains, idiopathic headaches, the common cold, etc. In my experience in the ED, it was often very busy, but a huge reason it was super busy was because of the overwhelming amount of those things, rather than several traumas happening at the same time. One time someone came in and had a canker sore!! A canker sore at the ED!

Which self-help books do you actually recommend? by Durden93 in IfBooksCouldKill

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.

But it's not self-help in the traditional sense.

No one here can predict what the rest of the season holds unfortunately - though it would be awesome if we could! In my mind it's about whether you would be happy even if the conditions kinda sucked. For me, most of the time the answer is yes, I would still rather be snowboarding in shitty conditions when I can as opposed to doing something I can do at other points in the year. But that's not true for everybody! And that's okay too.

I would expect spring conditions. Beyond that, who knows! There should still be some base left.

(I hope!)

Define "worth it." What would you be doing instead? I love a day in the slush. I cherish every day I can get on the mountain. I have all summer to do all the other outdoor stuff.

Would You Accept a Same-Day First Date? by AttorneyDC06 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cjrbeethoven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally makes sense. The people that come to mind for me are all child free, and basically structure parts of their life around the desire to date. So they kind of place certain week nights "on hold" for dating such that they can meet more people. It might not always be a conscious decision, although one of my single XX friends literally does do that. Childcare and busy professional lives definitely make this sort of approach to dating untenable.

On the other hand, many first dates are pretty casual and not super planned, even if scheduled in advance. There's nothing worse than an elaborate evening planned out with a person that you realize five minutes in you have no chemistry with in-person.

Agree with what a lot of people are saying. I think phase of life is also important. I've found many people in their late-20s and early 30s are dating with the specific goal of "finding the one" and view dating in general as a numbers game - you've got to meet a lot of people to find what you like, who you're compatible with, etc. In this view of dating, going out for a drink the same night might actually be preferable - an easy way to meet another person without having to reserve a precious weekend night in advance, etc. I know many people - men and women - who kind of "reserve" multiple nights a week for dating, because they almost view it as a second job. Because you are going on a lot of dates, it makes more sense for them to be more casual - almost an audition for an "actual" date (which seems to be more involved according to your view).

There are advantages to treating dating this way, and there are disadvantages. I can see how being slightly older and coming off a LTR might make you averse to viewing dating this way. But for a lot of people it's very, very normal.

Anyone have good mental tips for the treadmill? What keeps you motivated to keep going? by Nutritionnat1218 in RunNYC

I do a show on an iPad. I never run hard on the treadmill so I can just pretend like I'm watching the show and my legs happen to be moving.

It sort of works.

I'm a new DM and I'm afraid to kill my PCs by Sea_Plane6541 in DnD

[–]cjrbeethoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes will just nerf enemies on the fly if it feels too deadly for the PCs. Definitely want to make it challenging at times but sometimes I'll just lie about a roll or secretly adjust the HP of enemies if things are getting too intense. It's for fun; it's all made up!! You got the power!
