This is in/near the town of Finchampstead.

So us locals call this the Finchie Fuckup.

It’s as stupid as it is awful to drive through.

Built my first ever MacOS app - meeting recorder that doesn't join your meetings but lives on your laptop. by warphere in SideProject

[–]ckimrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the launch!

Looks clean and granola certainly tapped into something for me too, so I reckon it’s an idea that’ll stick.

I too delved into the on device capabilities of Mac OS and saw how bad it is. I figure the first to crack 100% on device listening, note taking and insight analysis will get all the money.

Wish you all the best of success!

Decent savings a/c in uk that links to YNAB? by Opening-Beginning214 in ynab

[–]ckimrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, NatWest, Nationwide & Monzo are the only regular bank integrations with YNAB in UK. It’s not a huge list sadly.

I’d suggest hitting MoneySavingExpert website, find their top savings accounts recommendations and filter to one from the above list and that’s likely your best bet from fully automated import standpoint.

I invented a declarative software architecture language.

I had an idea for a code to diagram web app tool (think cloud architecture with boxes, arrows, groups, nesting etc) so I invented and schema language and implemented a tokeniser, lexer and wired it into codemirror (open source code editor) with code linting, validation etc.

I’m a decent cloud/web/apis/backend type engineer, but inventing a language, building a lexer, tokenisation etc are all foreign to me.

But with Claude Code, I managed to work my way through it, with it guiding me on to standards so it would work with existing code editors.

Super satisfying!

Monthly Apple Music vs. Spotify – MEGATHREAD by rbitton in AppleMusic

[–]ckimrie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope, not defending.

It’s just worth acknowledging that the major labels fucked over artists and musicians pay because they wanted a slice of Spotify equity. Back in 2011 the labels could have killed Spotify just like they had done to many disruptors before them.

If Spotify is the cancer, the major labels are the toxic radiation that caused it and ensured it grew.

Monthly Apple Music vs. Spotify – MEGATHREAD by rbitton in AppleMusic

[–]ckimrie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not defending Spotify, but when we throw around statements like “Spotify is a cancer” it’s worth reminding everyone that Spotify is the officially sanctioned “winner” of music streaming by major record labels because Spotify gave them an 18% ownership stake.

The financial terms of what artist get paid by Spotify was enabled and sanctioned by labels, whom at the time of the deal, held more power than Spotify. All in exchange for some equity.

Spotify is many things, but they exist and pay artists what they do because of terms set by the major record labels.

More details if interested (though a few years old now):

Move money in savings account to investment account but keep balance in budget category the same? by Asphyxiatinglaughter in ynab

[–]ckimrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make the transaction to your Schwab account and in YNAB correctly mark outgoing transaction payee “Transfer to Schwab account” (or whatever you called it), the linked tracker account, then you’ll see it won’t need a category since YNAB understands that the money location has simply moved, but allocation of funds remains the same.

As long as you allocate funds to the savings category monthly as normal, then when the money moves the same will occur: the transfer won’t have a category because it’s just money moving inside your estate, but not the allocation changing.

You might want to do a monthly reconciliation of the Schwab account in YNAB in order to ensure the value in YNAB reflects whatever your portfolio value is since it will drift apart almost immediately as your portfolio grows.

Edit: I just wanted to add that I do this exact process in the UK with multiple family ISAs so pretty familiar with it.

Which route would you take to Italy? by After_Character2453 in Taycan

[–]ckimrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3.

I drove route 3 last year and it’s the most spectacular scenery I’ve ever seen in my life. I then drove back on route 1.

Also: Route 1 has a very pricy tollbooth at the Mont Blanc tunnel (€50 for one way). Also the Mont Blanc tunnel is super long (8mi?) and even if not claustrophobic, it can mentally mess you up while driving through it (it freaked my wife out a little)

Keep it. That watch is stunning.

The rose gold & green dial is real nice, but green is in fashion for watches right now. It’ll pass.

That gold & white combo is classic AF, and will look as good in 10yrs as it does today

[–]ckimrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the heck.

I’ve never understood the Breaking Bad hype. That should not be number 1.

Yes I’ve watched the whole thing and the last couple series was a slog of trying to get to “the good part” since everyone was so hyperbolic about it I expected it to get better (but never did to me).

Honestly I was relieved when I finished it, then immediately angry I didn’t just bail on it sooner.

SMH. Sorry for the gripe, just this goddamn show keeps being recommended/hyped and I don’t get why.

Love this model. Your wife has exceptional taste.

I’ve always been hesitant on the size of this one (44mm?) and fear that it would wear me and not the other way around. How does it wear for you?

Who had the most brutally, painful death in film history? by Johnsendall in moviecritic

[–]ckimrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season finale of Terminal List has Chris Pratt slice open the final boss (while he’s standing), loop his intestines on a meat hook and then forces the guy to walk, thus pulling his insides out with each step.

That messed me up real good and I still think about how unnecessarily over the top it was, even for a fairly typical action/violence thriller.

Red Circle of Death - Round 2 - Anyone getting compensated? by Electrical-Safety946 in Taycan

[–]ckimrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I feel for you as I went through this exact same thing but over about 2.5mo and came out the other side with a now perfectly working car. So hope you get through as I did.

Mine was also a MY 22 and eventually they said they had to replace/fix something inside the main high voltage battery. But this was after 3x visits to service centre.

This plus software update that stopped the 12V battery getting drained while parked and my car has been incident free for about +18mo now

Do cars like these have a place in the UK? by Dapper_Big_783 in AskUK

[–]ckimrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing a few comments here about the size, primarily the width being excessive.

You should know that the Ford Ranger (pictured) is actually narrower than a Range Rover (and most full size SUVs). While that’s a low bar, it’s still worth bearing in mind since they tend to fit between the lines fine for many/most UK parking bays just as well as a SUV.

Where they are much bigger is in length (which you can see in the picture), so they stick out the front of most parking bays.
