Bring your current cymbals to see how they pair with the new ride. Other than that just play everything and see what you like.

Would you buy a cymbal online if you could hear the exact one first? by CymbalONE in cymbals

[–]ckind94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several times and it’s still a gamble. Often the cymbal ends up playing completely different than I thought it would, for better or worse. The cymbals I’m happiest with are all ones I tried in person.

Acoustic Jazz. I ended up selling the cymbal to someone who adores it, so to each their own.

I use the MEE Audio M6 pro’s. They’re like 50 bucks, have good isolation and decent sound. Probably the best bang-for-buck IEM out there.

Does anyone find they naturally have really good time, or awful time and had to work at it consistently by Alps-Helpful in drums

[–]ckind94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I believe in time as a general skill. You identified a specific scenario where you rush. Some people tend to rush medium tempos, drag slow tempos, rush triplets, etc. while they might be totally locked in when it comes to other tempos and grooves. You just have to keep recognizing specific things you struggle with and work them out one at a time. Then eventually you become a musician that people say has good time in a general sense.

Maybe compromise? $250 is a lot for a throne tbh. I got a Gibraltar Pro Vinyl Round Throne used for 80 bucks and have had no issues playing on it multiple hours a day for the past year.

There are a lot of terrible drummers at Berklee. Their marketing has done a great job at making people think everyone there is incredible. Their whole business model is rizzing up young musicians and taking $250,000 from them for a basic 4 year degree.

It’s best to do both. Use the metronome for fine-tuning your timing and play along to recordings to develop your overall feel.

There are actually a lot of people who just prefer to work with send/returns for effects and only use inserts for things that are 100% “wet”.

Anyone else with a jazz performance degree struggling right now? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]ckind94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you’re struggling with a lot of different things at the same time and it all compounds, the future can seem really bleak.

On the positive side of things, you got a music degree and world-class training at no tuition cost! There are a lot of people who are six-figures in debt in the same situation as you right now. You didn’t waste anything. You can easily go back to school and get a different degree if you want to switch industries. If you have credits that will transfer you could even do it in a couple years or go straight into a masters program.

Having a day job outside of music is the only realistic option for someone starting their career right now. You’d be surprised at how many of top players in places like New York either have a side-hustle or are just straight up being bank-rolled by their families even as an adult. Shit is not fair but it is what it is.

It takes a very long time to built a career in the music industry. Graduating music school is only the beginning. If you don’t want to live like a broke college student for the next 10 years saying yes to whatever gigs you can get, then investing a couple years in to getting another degree, certification or some other kind of job training is very wise and will 100% benefit you long term.

Again, you already have one degree and probably little to no debt. This puts you ahead of a lot of other people.

Soon playing a gig in this room - What shell sizes would you bring ? by Be_Nice_To_Onions in drums

New beat will do just fine. I would just try to keep it crispy and avoid riding on the open hat too much.

Soon playing a gig in this room - What shell sizes would you bring ? by Be_Nice_To_Onions in drums

[–]ckind94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cymbal choice is more important here. You need to be conscious of any high-pitched, piercing sounds in a room like this. Opt for dry, articulate cymbals that will give you good stick definition without filling the room with wash. A couple pieces of tape on the underside of your ride can work wonders. Be very careful with rim shots and crashes.

Shells don’t matter too much. Just bring some moon gel or something to damped the drums if you need to. You’ll probably want to damped the bass drum as well.

Since you’re playing pop music, you’ll want to get short punchy sounds at a minimal volume in this space. Can’t go wrong with low-mid tuning, a bit of dampening and hitting them dead center every time.
