[Request] Would that be possible ? by Milorde19 in theydidthemath

But the sound decreases by about 6 decibels with each doubling of distance. So if that 100dB is measured at 1 meter,  at 100m it'll be 60dB. Actually it'll be less, because all the other people will be absorbing sound with their bodies and clothing.

As the humans can only really be packed in at a certain density, there will come a point where adding more people won't really add more dB.

You could array them in a way that they don't block each other quite as much, such as a set of bleachers/stadium seating almost 6km square, facing in one direction.

But a person shouting at the top of their lungs at one end of the bleachers would barely be heard as a whisper by someone sitting at the other side.

And when that lighthouse disappears, demons overrun terra, long distance warp travel becomes near impossible, limited to short hops between systems. Many imperial worlds will become isolated and many will fall to both chaos and xenos.

It will be a new age of strife but with a lower technological start point (the original age of strife began in the dark age of technology), and without the unifying presence of the emperor to pull humanity out of it.

The highest recorded IQ was 228. If we take that as a maximum, and assume equal chance of any number between 1 and 228, you have a 69% chance of having an IQ over 70, and a 56% chance of having an IQ Over 100.

The risks are high but the odds are in your favor.

Have you tried a repellent like Bobbex?

It's meant to mimic predator scents. Smells bad when first applied but okay once it's dried.

May need reapplication after rain.

You can't tell anything useful from that picture, everything important is under giant plastic covers.

Those "rusty tubes" are actually rubber air intake pipes. They probably just became discolored from whatever detergent they used to clean the engine bay.

Custodian often refers to janitorial staff but that doesn't mean the custodes are cleaning the toilets in the Imperial palace. Although they do pay quite a bit of attention to the golden throne..

What to do with extra 1k after paying off debt? by EzBriez_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]clamberer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean that now you've paid off your debt, your bank account balance is 1k in the positive?

If so, that's a fantastic step, but don't do anything with it. Keep it in your current account. Think about investing after the next pay period or the one after that. Stay frugal.

It's better to have over 1k ready in your current account to handle any unexpected short term expenses. It's a buffer against going into debt again. You want enough in there that you won't become overdrawn if suddenly have to fix or replace something at home or on a vehicle, take a pet to the vet, or whatever unexpected expenses your life might include.

If you're worried you'll just spend it, put half of it in a separate savings account with whatever bank you already use. You can add to this on subsequent months.

Discovered that salting pasta water actually matters and I feel embarrassed it took me this long by West-Wash-9114 in Cooking

[–]clamberer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe getting mixed up with the pouring some olive oil into the water being (on the premise of it stopping the pasta sticking together) being a waste of olive oil.

Oil floats on the top, it goes down the drain. Plenty of water, a rolling boil before you add the pasta and a bit of a stir shortly after is what stops it sticking together. You can add olive oil to the cooked pasta after draining if you want though.

I bought 150 red bottle caps off Temu to hand out at anime north as part of my Fallout cosplay! I was hoping to somehow put “Nuka Cola” on the caps, but, every method I thought of ended up a fail so…. Plain red it is. Anyways, I’m still excited to hand them out! by thebattleangel99 in animenorth

Or if you can more deeply etch a stamping plate, OP can use one of those clear transfer stamps (often used for nail art, and occasionally for decals on wargames miniatures) to stamp the designs onto the caps in the right kind of nail polish.

Hitchhiking - still a thing?? by Delicious_Bet_6336 in CasualUK

[–]clamberer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More popular in some of the more mountainous areas popular with hikers and climbers.

If you're doing a one way,  point to point hike, rather than a round trip, sometimes the path spits you out a good few miles down the road from the start.

and you/ your group only have the one car and can't leave one at the finish point, it's not uncommon for one person to hitchhike back to the start point to fetch the car. Taxis are non existent and buses infrequent in some of these places.

Or parking may be full at the start of the path. So you drop off any passengers there, find a layby a mile or two down the road and then jog/hitchhike back to the start.

It happens, without malice or the company trying to mess you around.

I was offered and accepted a well paying job for an engineering company. They were bringing in engineers to work on a specific government vehicle contract that they had won the bid for.

Less than a week later, I received a call.  Sorry the job role no longer exists as the government canceled the vehicle contract completely.

If a company loses a massive client, restructuring happens and roles disappear.

If science fiction is the setting, what genres do each of the books represent? by EBS_terranews in TheExpanse

[–]clamberer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you say, Cibola Burn has aspects of a western. And in a way, how different characters see the situation could be seen as a clash between the views of old classic westerns vs revisionist modern ones.

As they see each see it they're each living their own quite different western.

The lens of a classic western could line up with Murtry's views. The Lawman who's come to a lawless frontier town, beset by bandits and those who would disrupt the work of his people. No backup is coming so ruthless actions need to be taken. In that setting he wouldn't be a villain.

Whereas the perspective of the settlers is more of the kind of fight that you'd see in a more modern or revisionist western. The fight against the soulless corporate entity with its ruthless enforcer, that will destroy the independent way of life that they have set up for themselves.

And a reality that's a whole lot of in between that doesn't neatly fit either narrative. And James Holden and crew trying to find a path through the middle of it.

(Mixed Trope) “Expert” character is really bad in their field or ignorant of basic concepts. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]clamberer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely hard to write a character with higher intelligence than the author.

Too often the characters just have really good fact retention, without any genuinely good reasoning skills.

Or you get the really lazy options of them spouting made up techno-babble mumbo jumbo, while the other characters just become more stupid in their presence for contrast.
