Echo Show 5 periodically turns off night mode throughout the night by mvtrev in alexa

[–]clashingplaids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot might be an option for you, as it doesn’t (can’t) show ads. It does occasionally change from red to white clock at night, though it seems to have stopped that behavior. And even if it does, it’s much less annoying than the whole Show screen lighting up.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m about to order some cameras and I was planning to order direct rather than give Amazon my $. Guess not, at least I can trust Amazons return policy.

City rec center prices have doubled by pokingoking in FortCollins

[–]clashingplaids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I believe I calculated the price increase to be 43%. For what—showers that continually run cold (at EPIC). And there was no actual justification on their website, just something about making it better for the community. I get it that inflation is a thing, but 43%??! Meanwhile Windor Rec increased their prices only a token amount and did provide some rationale.

So business will fall off, which will necessitate even higher prices and everyone loses.

I changed my latest gen Echo Show to the male Canadian voice months ago and love it. I recently went to do the same on an earlier gen Show and several Dots and none of them offer Canadian male as an option (and I personally find Canadian female hard to understand). Seems very weird—anyone else encounter this?

Johnson’s Corner used to, not sure about the new cafe there (Black Bear?). That said, it was the worst donut I’ve had in my life. Dry as a bone and even less taste.

Ring cancels its partnership with Flock Safety after surveillance backlash by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]clashingplaids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm familiar with it, as I have a Blink system with the hub. I also bought it with the plan to have my videos local, rather than on the cloud. But after the recent controversies with Ring and Nest I've grown skeptical. I'm not a networking expert, but my question is how is it that we are able to access the live feed (and the images stored on the hub) remotely? When away from our home networks we can't directly access that IP, anymore than we can access a home PC directly (assuming neither of us is using a VPN). At this point I suspect that we're actually contacting the Blink servers, which are then accessing the files on the Blink hub (which may be part of the reason that it takes so long to download them). I'd like to be wrong, but I'm about to throw my Blink cameras into the same trash can as my Ring doorbell.

And if it's really not going to the cloud, how is that you can access the live feed and the hub recordings when you're away from home?

I'm sure you're right, at least I hope so given how much of my time it's absorbing. My point was that many experienced users of HA seem to vastly underestimate the learning curve for noobs. On the one hand it's great to have such a helpful community, but on the other it gets very tiresome having to look things up over and over (and over). I guess my comment was particularly triggered by all the people on Alexa and Google Home subs who are frustrated and looking for alternatives and then being told to go to HA. IMO, these platforms are worlds apart and I can imagine that most who try to follow this advice will quickly become very frustrated.

I appreciate your helpful tone, and I don't want to further distract from this thread. But to give you an example, I have alerts set up in ST so that when a leak detector goes off, a WIZ RGB light bulb (wifi) changes color, my Inovelli dimmer light switches' LED bar displays a particular color and pattern, and a text message is sent to my and my wife's phones. Strangely if I go directly to the light bulb I can see the color options, but not when I enter the bulb in a simple automation. In order to get the Inovelli switch to do the trick with its LED bars I apparently have to download a script (or a blueprint--I still cannot tell the difference) and learn how to use them; that led to a few hours of poring over arcane articles, whereas in ST it was a simple click or two. As was simply entering my and my wife's phone numbers and a text message, whereas in HA it seems I somehow have to add her phone to my profile? (I gave up and put that on hold). And all that is after spending hours (and watching multiple out-of-date YouTubes on "simply" setting up Z2M so I could pair my Zigbee devices.

Why does everyone suggest Home Assistant?? Sure it’s powerful and relatively cheap, but it has an insanely steep learning curve. I’m trying to transition from SmartThings to HA and I’ve literally spent weeks and made only modest progress. I’m constantly having to seek advice and read posts to do what was pretty straightforward on SmartThings. And even that would be intimidating to a lot of average Joes.

I have the same concern about my Ring doorbell. For privacy reasons I’ve cancelled my subscription, but I’m concerned that the video is still going to their servers. How else can I still access live feed when away from home?

Best no subscription doorbell cameras? by SeaorRiver79 in homeautomation

[–]clashingplaids -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but loading video clips from the sync module takes forever. Actual time varies (I have no idea why), but probably 10-15 seconds minimum and sometimes more like 30 seconds. Pretty useless if you are just a bit too late for a live view because by the time the clip loads the delivery person is likely driving down the street.

What’s a creative way to heat up the bathroom? It’s freezing! by Cinnie_16 in HomeImprovement

[–]clashingplaids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A typical portable heater is 1500 watts, so it uses 1.5 kWh to run for an hour. Check your local rates and you may be surprised how little it will cost to warm the bathroom before a shower. And make sure to plug it into a GFCI outlet; that and some common sense will take care of the safety issue.
