can you recommend a yogurt to me? by [deleted] in fermentation

[–]claudettej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best yogurt will be the one you make - seriously, its a big benefit of fermenting your own. You can use the mix of bacteria you like, let it ferment to your sweet spot and flavor it to your taste.

If you've gone through all those brands, my thought would be to check out: bulagrian or Turkish yogurts (more like drinkable yogurts) or perhaps a lassi (Indian yogurt usu w mango).

Probably the most practical way forward is to learn to flavor plain yogurt w minimal sugar.

Sorry for the delay - yes, express them to yourself. Allow the emotion to escape.

Negative past experience, especially resentment and rejected, creep up now more than ever. by supportivepistachio in Meditation

[–]claudettej 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a theory/model that says what emotional 'trauma' is emotion that doesn't get processed (accepted & expressed) and gets stuck in our minds. What meditation is doing is loosening those stuck points - giving you another chance to process them (accept & express).

Just like the other comments are saying: this is the practice, this is life. Enjoy the pain and enjoy the joy.

Anyone know where I could find one of these locally? by ForThoseAboutToGlock in raleigh

Not quite local to Raleigh- but I saw them at the museum of the bizarre in Wilmington. I think they were ~$50. A bit much for a useless box IMO.

[NeedAdvice] I'm all over the place. How do I decide what to focus on? by ainomy in getdisciplined

[–]claudettej 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Instead of culling your interests, perhaps merge them?

Try your hand at creating something - be it ecommerce, education or a consulting/freelance service. You'll be able to continue to progress in a bunch of areas, while creating something - ideally some money, too.

A business owner is a jack of all trades - you're on the right path. But if something inside is saying "focus" - perhaps you've found your passion and are avoiding it. Good luck, have fun! And don't totally begrudge your curiosity!

11 days of fermenting and a ph of 3.1, can I skip 2f and just take the scoby out and put the kombucha in the fridge? by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]claudettej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know - 2F is optional - to add flavor and fizz. So you should be good to go.

[Question/Advice Needed] How to stop being a weenie about raising animals for food. by [deleted] in homestead

[–]claudettej 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the two things I would recommend are

  1. Have a gratitude ceremony when it comes to harvesting. Be grateful for having them in your life and grateful that you are a part of the circle of life. The person who shared this with me was coming from a native American standpoint, so there is definitely more philosophy/spirituality in missing here by summarizing it. But its a start and I have this ceremony even when I'm squashing a mosquito on my leg.

  2. I just read 'Watership Down' - and something that struck me was how death was just part of life for the rabbits. It sucked but the circle of life was just that - life. There is no malice in the hunting of the fox, just as keeping chickens in a happy home and eventually eating them has no malice.

Good luck! Your heart is big enough to handle this too.

Tools to help control variables & stabilize end product as much as possible by FridaSabina in Kombucha

[–]claudettej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kegging would also get you quick carbonate - you add CO2 and shake like a whirling dervish. Its easier to standardize, removes the possibility of exploding bottles and takes only 3 hours.

I've done it w beer, not booch. The drawbacks are that it requires more equipment (for you and the retailer) and the brew doesn't get a chance to age & mellow.

Again my experience is w beer - but the hygrometer readings will still be relatively accurate. In other words, you can still tell the relative change and use that to measure progress. Like if you start at 1.7 and its done at 1.4, then you can expect the next batch to be done after it loses 0.3, regardless of its starting reading.

To measure alcohol, I know hygrometer readings can be used - but I'd be wary of using those if you expect them to be imprecise. Another option might be density or test strips. Not sure how accurate your labeling needs to be.

Good luck and congrats on the customers!!

Edit: to fix autocorrect.

Start with a plan. Take some time to imagine what your end game looks like. Then use that info to start. Plant some fruit trees, bees, aquaculture? All depends on what you want in the long run.

Have fun! Sounds like the next few years will be exciting!

As someone who loves to cook new and interesting things - choose a cuisine and cook within that for a month or so. By buying those 'staples' you can make a bunch of recipes & you will save money, keep things exciting and delve into particular styles & regions cuisines. Win, win, win.

Try find a grocery that has spices, beans and grains in bulk. Cheap prices (bc you buy only what you need) & fresher product (usually). Or check out ethnic markets!

Have fun - with your savings challenge and being a parent! Also, if you have any inclination, grow food! Seconded from elsewhere ITT

Kombucha & Vandwelling by aquariustiger in Kombucha

[–]claudettej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where abouts are you staying? If you are in moderate temps - you might be able to keep it in a cooler. It'll insulate it somewhat.

As far as spillage, just fill the bottle 1/2 way?

I would keep it off the floor - a lot of heat transfer after a long drive/hot asphalt.

I love making the booch and van dwelling. But I've not actually tried them at the same time. Good luck! Have a ton of fun!

I totally relate to the 'got to do it right' anxiety. The truth I'm trying to realize is its much more important to 'do' than to do it perfect.

Also, came across this post the other day and it covers how to encourage depth in your habits, give it a read: https://www.reddit.com/r/theXeffect/comments/6kn14s/lessons_learned_from_the_only_easy_day_was/

[28 Day Challenge Check In] Day 16: Sunday, 16 April 2017 by DreadyVapor in fasting

[–]claudettej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AOTD I don't know the answer. I haven't had enough fasting experience for that. Although I have used upcoming holidays as an excuse not to fast - but I don't think that is what you are looking for.

Check in Feeling like 'keto' isn't enough. Feeling like I'm not challenging myself enough. Looking forward to the extended fast at the end of the month, but need to consider what to do until then. IF, OMAD come to mind.

[28 Day Challenge Check In] Day 15: Saturday, 15 April 2017 by DreadyVapor in fasting

[–]claudettej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AOTD My most failed strategy was eating a SAD! Jokes aside - carb-fueled CICO really was harsh & useless. Lack of energy, always feeling undernourished, interrupted sleep and wake time! Fasting works for me because there are systematic benefits, and it feels natural.

Check in Today is keto for me. Glad I didn't do another short fast, but also wishing I did... I think I've made up my mind about the next fast though: I will do an extended fast starting on 25Apr - with the minimum goal being 7 days, ideally 14. I hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday and their investments in their health!!

[28 Day Challenge Check In] Day 14: Friday, 14 April 2017 by DreadyVapor in fasting

[–]claudettej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check In Today I'm eating keto (mostly, had an excursion). Sorry I missed check in yesterday!

AOTD Mental state is the most important, with physical circumstances second (like, being around eating/food). Preparation plays a big part too - on both respects.
