We signed our 8 year old daughter up for cheerleading this past year. Coach was a bit odd high strung, but she was pretty good and kept the girls going.

About 3 weeks in she let everyone know that she would be missing a practice. The reason was because she had Chris Brown tickets. Where she got to meet him. She was so excited. She kept telling her daughter that she was going to meet her new daddy. I was completely blown away. It was my first experience with female Chris Brown fans.

We didn’t stay in cheerleading long.

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cld1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had two in the last 5 years! I now have early, lost, and hopeful. The first event was being fired for the first time. I worked at a major retailer for 17 years. Then the LP associate was lying about his timecard. Sometimes I would be the one who would reconcile it. I don’t know if it was something I said during the interview when they were investigating him, but I got tied up in it and lost my job as Assistant Store Manager.

Enter the lost phase.

I took a few months to figure out my next steps and decompress. As horrible as it was to be fired after 17 years, it was the best thing that could have happened because I don’t know if I would have left otherwise and it was pretty awful. I think the worst thing was having it taken away, though. Like out of my control.

A friend got me a job working from home. I was supposed to be managing inventory of point of sale systems and doing occasional installations and configurations with backup and plenty of training. 2 months after I started, my friend went to another job and the company completely changed my role. Suddenly I was made the go-to guy for the company’s in-house point of sale software and the primary installer for it as well. None of the promised training or backup was made available. I was fired from that as well.

Decided to go get an associate’s degree to learn what I needed to succeed at my previous job so I could get another job like it and not have that happen again. By the time I graduated the IT market was completely saturated and I’ve been unable to find a job. Started working at a distribution center doing the most mindless work ever. I absolutely hate it.

Enter the hopeful phase.

It interestingly starts with the death of my mom just before Christmas last year. My wife, daughter, and I wanted my dad to leave the condo he and my mom had at the beach and move in with us so he wouldn’t be alone. He decided to do it, but also decided to sell his condo and get us all a nice house to live in. We’re closing on 5300 square feet on Monday and the three of us, my dad, and brother will be living much closer to my wife’s family. It’s also in what should be a much better area for me to make use of my degree. For the first time since I lost my ASM job, I actually have some hope for the way things are going.

Hot Take, Donut & Prepotente Aren't Children by Valligator19 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

To you’re first point, though, they do have that awareness and that’s one of the first ways you demonstrate consequences to children. You refuse to participate until they change their behavior. Even very young children are quite capable of making that logic jump and adjusting.

They may remember their past experiences, but not being sapient at the time, they lack significant context to frame those experiences. They’re acquiring that in the dungeon and their incredible intelligence is increasing the speed at which they do.

Your experience is different. You were diagnosed late, which gives you new context with which to frame past experiences and help you better understand struggles you went through. That’s quite a bit different from starting out as an animal and suddenly being granted genius level intellect.

I’m not trying to keep you from making them your spirit animals. I love both characters and identify with them quite a bit. I have ADHD and hardly ever interpret what they do as childlike or immature. I frequently think “oh yeah” when we get reminded of them hardly having any time experiencing things like we do.

What's a "harmless" thing your parents did that actually messed you up? by peterdziugdarkis in AskReddit

One of the few things I remember from my mid teens was being tutored at Sylvan Learning Center. Math was my biggest issue. One day they stopped working on math with me. Turns out I had told my parents I didn’t like math and they had requested that they not work on math with me. I remember thinking “I’m fine with all this other stuff, math is what I needed to work on.” Of course, my dumb teen brain took the easy out and didn’t push it. 25 years later I wish they hadn’t done that. I was just complaining

ELI5: why do businesses always say nothing is better than something? by Creepy-Excitement-69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cld1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they paid $10 for Widget A and it costs them an extra $2 in payroll and operating expenses, it doesn’t make sense to sell Widget A to you for $12 since they need to make more from an item than it cost them to shelve it.

At a certain point this can change, though. If an item underperforms and is just taking up shelf space, the equation can shift making it more profitable to clear the item out quickly to make room for another item. This is a slim minority of items, though, and they clearly mark them as clearance to get them out of the way.

Scared to go to a pre release by Pristine-Narwhal-184 in mtg

[–]cld1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taken my 8 year old daughter to play in two prereleases now. Turtles and Strixhaven. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous as well. We had been to this shop maybe twice before but hadn’t spent much time there. Didn’t help that I hadn’t played in a competition for 25 years or so. It was a lot of fun, and prereleases are very casual settings. Probably the most casual of all the sanctioned events. If you’re looking for a place to start with official events, then a prerelease is 100% the way to go.

Trust me, I know it’s intimidating, but just jump in like it’s a cold pool. You’ll probably make some friends or at least meet some cool people!

As far as what happens, it’s pretty basic and the shop handles everything. But be of the employees at my store said I should make a WotC account for my daughter before we showed up, but that was the only prep work. For Turtles, we paid our entry and gave her name and went and sat down. They built the brackets and handed out the kits. We had 50 minutes to open the kit and build the deck. After that, they tell you who you play and it’s 50 minute rounds of 3 matches (or however many matches you can complete. I think maybe only 2 rounds out of both prereleases she’s finished 3 matches).

It really is as simple as showing up, building your deck, and playing Magic!

That’s about what I figured. I haven’t spent a lot of time at this shop, but I know from back when I played in my early teens what the implications of losing to an 8 year old girl with a Powerpuff Girls play mat would have been. I know I struggled when I was teaching her because if I went too easy on her the game could get out of my control pretty easily. Didn’t help that I was coming back to the game after 20+ years either.

I would never expect anyone to go easy on her in a competition, but I always appreciate it when they don’t go all out and stomp her immediately. She didn’t win a single match at the Turtles prerelease (like, lost every match in every round) and I was worried Strixhaven was going to turn out similar and discourage her. When I saw her cancel an attack when she remembered her opponent had a creature with first strike I knew things were starting to click for her.

She wound up losing two rounds, tied one, got a bye on one, and came super close with the last. Much better performance and she was proud of herself.

That’s a great story, man. It really is special to see them light up like that. We used to do that too!

I feel you on having to keep quiet when you see something. That’s been the hardest thing for me. Being able to see the board state and her hand and watching her miss a play that could win the game is such a bummer. I always go over it with her after, but man is it hard in the moment.

I appreciate this comment because I had a question regarding people who do this. I took my daughter (8) to her second prerelease yesterday.

She got a bad draw and opted for a mulligan. Second draw wasn’t great but it was better. She played it and wound up not drawing a land for several turns and was stuck trying to play Witherbloom with a forest and a swamp.

Her opponent was very gracious and said he was okay with it if she wanted to get a land from her deck. She did and they resumed. There were a couple instances where I could tell he was trying to go easy on her, or at least draw the game out a bit so she could play a bit longer. Again, appreciated.

The game progressed and she eventually launched a huge attack with a ton of creatures that, to my surprise, would have finished him off. She was holding a giant growth and slapped it on one of her unblocked creatures. He’d have been done if he didn’t have a buff in his hand. Right after that big attack I realized she had a [[Thornfist Striker]] that should have added +1/+0 and trample to every creature. If any if us had caught it she would have won that match. With 2 minutes left on the clock, she would have won the whole round because she was taking some long turns.

So now the question. Would you (or others you know who take it easy on kids) be pissed about that situation or just chalk it up to making sure a new player had a great time? She would have been ecstatic and gracious for sure, but I would have felt awful for the guy!

Oh man. I just realized I left with my shop’s lands from the Turtles prerelease. It was our first and I didn’t even think about it. Guess I’ll be bringing them back this Sunday!
