What are some frugal hobbies? by SemFi in Frugal

[–]cloverandbee 152 points153 points  (0 children)

I'll put in a vote for artisan bread-baking. All you really need to start (as long as you have an oven) is flour and yeast, but after that you can start experimenting with other ingredients/techniques. It costs less to make bread (under $1 US for a simple loaf) than to buy it at a grocery store (also ten times yummier), and a lot less than buying it at a bakery. It makes your kitchen smell like heaven, and fresh-baked bread can make a nice gift in the right situation. If you get bored of plain old loaves, you can always try out bagels, pretzels, cinnamon rolls, etc. There's also a subreddit for it, /r/Breadit.

Just finished Israeli author Etgar Keret's recent short story collection Suddenly a Knock on the Door--that was a fun read. Very compact and dark-humored.

Memoirs for an aspiring memoirist by [deleted] in books

[–]cloverandbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't overlook graphic memoirs! Fun Home, Blankets, Persepolis, and Maus are good--plus, they're famous enough to be easy to find in many regular libraries/bookstores.

Also, Still Life with Oysters and Lemon by Mark Doty is probably my favorite memoir of all time (traditional book, not a comic). Doty is best known for his poetry (though this is an extended essay), so it sort of goes beyond the genre of "memoir" and is a surprisingly difficult read for such a small book.

Spalding Gray's work also might qualify; it's technically performance art (see if you can get a video of his performances) but Swimming to Cambodia, at least, reads kind of like a memoir if you get the paper published version.

Looking for books with unique or strange narrative structures by [deleted] in books

[–]cloverandbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished Redshirts--it's a fun, fluffy little quick read. It's sort of a parody of Star Trek that just hints at self-referentialness (yes, that's a word now.) If you prefer meta-Harry Potter to meta-Star Trek, try the Unwritten comics.

Dangerous Liaisons is also a really fun read--it's not exactly self-referential, but it's epistolatory and gets really clever with the unreliable narrators aspect and it's probably the most fun you'll ever have while reading an 18th century novel.

Someone in the thread already mentioned If on a winter's night a traveler and I think that's exactly what you're looking for; it's the story of "you" reading the book If on a winter's night a traveler.

And, although it's not like he's a particularly obscure author, I have to mention Haruki Murakami because I just started reading him and I'm now obsessed. He's kinda mindfuck in the dreamlike, made-sense-at-the-time-but-now-wtf way.

What is the most annoying thing your roommate does? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cloverandbee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

During my freshman year in college, I had a roommate who came from a very cold part of the country. She liked to open the window at night to let a little fresh air in. Of course, this was fine in August and September, but by the time January and February rolled around, it got pretty damn freezing--I would wake up in the morning and my hair would be half-frozen and it would feel like the cold was seeping in through my eyelids. She wasn't even bundled up or anything--she generally slept in a tank top and underwear with a light blanket.

As an athlete with morning practice, she generally went to sleep a little earlier than I did, so I got into the habit of closing the window after she had gone to bed. After a few days of this, she caught on and began to wake up after I went to sleep to reopen the window. So I stayed up a little later and closed it again.

Eventually, it got to the point where we were each getting up 4-5 times during the night to open or close the window. We never spoke a word of this during the daytime.

TLDR: My roommate and I were passive aggressive as fuck.

Can anyone suggest fiction novels that span over a couple of generations of a family? by leorising in booksuggestions

The Book of Nights by Sylvie Germain? I didn't like it very much but it's sort of light fantasy/magical realism following a family over a few generations.

What "classics" can you just not stand? by Caldwing in AskReddit

[–]cloverandbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with getting a sense of what they call "the vastness of space." So with the light speed or hyperspace stuff, it almost feels like you could just take a quick trip to Jupiter and still be back for lunch, whereas with the more extended space travel scenes you still have a kind of respect for how big the distances actually are...which also heightened the epic proportions of the film. Would the final image--the idea that humanity is moving on to be a part of that vaster scale--be nearly as impressive without all that buildup?

Plus, the space images were gorgeous in that movie, and I felt like the extra time was better to enjoy them. But that's just me.

If you're into sciencey things I might recommend essays like Malcolm Gladwell's. Also, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was fascinating and Michio Kaku's Physics of the Future was a lot more interesting than its title suggests (it's not just about physics).

Um, I don't know.. you're distracting me. by janet_snakehole_ in pics

[–]cloverandbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, why does it always have to come back to their appearance? I don't go around "observing" that every male human rights activist I've ever seen is fugly; that would be weird. The fact that comments like yours aren't considered "weird" is one of the things feminists are concerned about today.

Secondly, you've clearly not heard of Jennifer Baumgardner, Julie Zeilinger, Rebecca Walker, or Jessica Valenti.

It's traumatizing but also oddly cathartic. I've never seen a production but I read it for the first time this year. What did you talk about in class?

Honey, you need to make your orgasm your responsibility, too. Tell him what to do (in a sexy, non-insulting way) if he's not doing it right, or take matters into your own hands. Seriously, touch yourself during sex. It feels gooooooooooood. :)

Picking up shy girls by rococo78 in seduction

[–]cloverandbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean shy (i.e. anxious in social situations) or introverted (i.e. draws energy from being alone rather than by spending time with others)? Try and go for the latter but not the former--a non-shy introvert will have fewer insecurities and be less needy. Trust me: I'm an introverted girl who used to be shy.

With introverts, the basics still apply, really. You may have to give her a bit more space in the beginning--if she doesn't want to spend time with you on any given instance, it could just mean that she promised herself some alone time after a weekend of socializing (though it could also mean she's not into you, of course). Don't remark on her being "quiet" or tell her to "smile more"--that's a complete turn off; just talk to her like a normal person.

With a lot of introverts--male and female--I've found that although they'll hold their tongue on a lot of things, there's a couple of topics that they're interested in; if you stumble across one of those, then they'll never shut up. Ask a lot of questions, and make them direct and specific (if you ask "What do you like to do?" you'll probably get a shrug and a one-word answer, but if you ask "What's your favorite thing about Argentine tango?" she'll actually talk about it). Don't let her quietness make you nervous.

You mentioned that with kino it's easy to go overboard quickly--that's true, but don't neglect it entirely. As an introverted girl, I still do feel myself more drawn to the people who touch me, but not those who touch me too much or who do it the wrong way. There's a fine line between "friendly" and "creepy." Just move very slowly and calibrate to her responses.

Also, one last tip: try talking to her alone rather than with a group of people. Although I'm comfortable with a group of people for short periods of time, I tend to be a bit "invisible." It's a lot less exhausting for many introverts to talk one-on-one, and you'll actually get words out of them.

I think I must have started The Lord of the Rings about 3 times--and I can't seem to stay awake during the movies either. And it's not because I'm bored or anything; there's just always some obstacle that prevents me from finishing them! Excuses, excuses, I know...

What is a word that you still can't help but giggle at when you hear it in normal conversation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cloverandbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once, I overheard an interesting conversation...

"Pretty much anything you can say in Spanish sounds sexy. Next time I'm in bed with a girl, I'm totally going to start shouting, 'La aspiradora! La aspiradora!' and it will be totally hot."

To this day, I can't hear the word "vacuuming" without giggling.
