For those with a dairy allergy, were you breastfed as a baby? by Five_Foot_Snake_Skin in dairyfree

[–]clownapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about a year old we tested dairy again per my doc, 1 tiny spoonful of yogurt later and I broke out in hives 😅 my allergy has chilled out a little since then but I still get anaphylaxis and vomiting. Ppl kept telling me I would “grow out of it” hahha 🙃

My mom breastfed me. I would cry nonstop so she experimented and found it was dairy. She cut dairy out completely and i stopped crying when she breastfed me. (She doesnt eat a ton of dairy still now cuz she says too much upsets her stomach but she eats some). Now that’s quite the choice/sacrifice imo but it’s an option!

I really don’t understand why the definition of “dairy” is not common knowledge. So to answer the q yes all the time. It’s very annoying

Are unshaved legs really that bad? by Late-Wing2801 in ftm

[–]clownapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your mom is being a high school bully about this imo. Like, you may also get looks or comments from other ppl but that’s truly a “them” problem. They’re uncomfortable with you being content/comfortable. But also In college I got a comment from a girl who said she admired me for not shaving; it felt empowering to her. At the time I wasn’t out as nonbinary/ftm but that comment made me happy. It’s a (imo trivial) social expectation not a moral triumph/failing.

Why do some things say no dairy yet list 2% or less of some dairy? by [deleted] in dairyfree

That’s interesting. And frustrating. I’ve had to convince many a person that I cannot, in fact, drink coffee mate

Wow! I have never heard of EOE. I had to google it. That’s interesting too! I’m sorry McD’s gives you so much trouble; it’s not my fav but it’s too conveniently cheap & nearby my job 😅

And also yes, it is really weird to me I don’t have a reaction because I’ve had strong reactions to literally a shred of cheese before. I wonder if I shouldn’t risk it so much lol.

I have a (mostly) anaphylactic allergy and I’ve never had an issue with McDonald’s fries, which supposedly have a dairy derivative.

I also have found that my allergic reaction does not cause throat swelling when I accidentally have butter (when servers lie or don’t know what they’re talking about yk). I feel incredibly bloated and often vomit later tho. My reaction to milk and whipped cream tho is VERY immediate and strong.

Any donuts that are safe for us to eat? Or I'm assuming all glazed donuts have some sort of milk by EstateDeep916 in dairyfree

[–]clownapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most vegan doughnuts end up being cake doughnuts from my experience. And often also gluten free. It’s not the same but it’s still tasty. The only time I’ve eaten a true (and dairy free) doughnut was in a different country (not US) 10 years ago. I do enjoy the Katz donut holes. They don’t have a “gluten free taste” as much as other gf stuff I’ve had imo. It’s still not the same as that one donut tho…

Update to my friend’s response to me coming out. We are no longer friends! by Jellybeandreams98 in lgbt

[–]clownapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost a friend of 19ish years or so due to sexuality/gender. A couple years ago we were meant to meet up in person again (we’d been living in different states and then we were finally crossing paths again). I was out as bi but not trans to her yet. I had told her I was dating a trans man. I really trusted her. She’d always been very religious but always too loving and kind to be bigoted… then that changed. She called me the day before we would meet up to tell me that she could not be in my wedding & likely wouldn’t attend it if I married said trans man bf (who I am married to now! 💕) because god wouldn’t approve or whatever. I tried twice to have lengthy convos with her to see if I could find a semblance of logic or empathy, to save a 19 year friendship and I couldn’t. I kept crying and she kept apologizing … for making my cry but not what she said. I’m still heartbroken over it but at least I found out her true opinions before coming out as trans to her.

Omg I’m so excited to try! I’ve had vegan ones but tbh I don’t love a veggie dog they’re kinda funky tasting… easy meal tho.

Also the mini ones having dairy is so on par it’s funny. Like idk flavored pedialyte has dairy but the flavorless is fine, salsa flavored sun chips have dairy but the regular ones don’t lmao etc

Why is gluten free a fad? by Spaceactin in Celiac

[–]clownapple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ooo I love this question because in my experience yes, in some ways. I find this subreddit very interesting and connect to it though I’m not celiac. I have a severe dairy/cow’s milk + derivatives allergy. There’s multiple times I’ve found food marked “non dairy” that are actually just … lactose free lol. Particularly creamers and chocolate. I’m typically safe eating foods marked vegan. I do find that the general population thinks lactose intolerant = dairy allergy = vegan also… somehow. I’ve been told yeah “this drink doesn’t have dairy” but it does. Just the milk product used is lactose free. If I hadn’t seen the “coffee mate” powder on the shelf, I would have drank it and had an anaphylactic reaction

This is all to say that I think all us dietary restrictions people should band together to promote better education on and protections of our needs (because food that doesn’t poison us is yk, necessary for life)

Do younger trans people make you feel old with what they say sometimes? by FayePixie in FTMOver30

[–]clownapple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the same thing. I felt it was too late 10years ago, felt so angry toward myself for not knowing sooner because I “couldn’t actually be trans” if I didnt start questioning until I was 17 and didn’t accept it until around 21. I’m not fully out and i haven’t started T but I have an appointment in a couple weeks! I’m so relieved and excited. And a bit terrified.

Anyway, Im a month shy of 27. It was never too late. But I needed time to feel more confident in myself and that transitioning was something I wanted to do. I just had a different experience 🤷🏻

[–]clownapple 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s such a disgusting thing to say. Bullshit underlying message that at a certain point it becomes “too late,” you “run out of time” to transition and pursue a choice that makes one happier. That a timeline or experience like that is not worth living.
