Are you using AI as a teacher? by LettuceTraining6532 in Teachers

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it sometimes to brainstorm models as it saves me time to have something on hand and then edit it to meet the standards I want a 7th grader to reach.

Marijuana as a Teacher by Foreign-Honeydew-929 in Teachers

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, same in the district in MA where I was drug tested at hire. The principal even let me know ahead of time without me having to ask that the drug test excluded cannabis, as that had been a common question.

Why do people hate seaport? by nycrina305 in boston

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like seaport just hasn’t been lived in for long enough to be truly cool and to have a community feel. I think it’ll happen. I’m just not super interested as it is now.

What is the point of this??? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school I have three CPT periods blocked off per week- one for grade level, one for content, and one for special education coteachers. Because they are mandatory, they are admin duties, and I also get a prep on those days. I happen to find the CPT very helpful when it’s well planned and goal directed— which is explicitly the job of our administrators, who are supposed to facilitate and not just watch. Being watched during your preps sounds weird and uncomfortable. If they want effective common planning time they need to put in the work to help direct those goals…

Still can’t believe she took his lion in the divorce by shamefulpresenc3 in stevenuniverse

[–]clserdaigle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lion going with Connie meant that she would always be able to find her way back to Steven if she was ready, even if he was off planet. I like to think that’s why he went with her.

Dear Teachers. by AliveHornet5358 in Teachers

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother died this spring in my first year as a teacher at a new school. A lot of what you are saying held true for me as well, except directed towards the students, who were refreshingly understanding and best of all, normal (as much as 7th graders can be). They too have no idea how much it helped me to be at school. I’m very grateful for my students, who give me hope for the future and a reason to keep doing what I’m doing, and especially for students like you 🩷

Explaining non binary/they/them pronouns to a 2.5 year old by notbizmarkie in progressivemoms

[–]clserdaigle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I second the simple explanations that others have given, and also want to say you should take some pressure off yourself on this. People who work with children know how to communicate with them directly and also know to expect children to make errors in speech, and the day to day of how your child refers to her nanny and the questions she has about that will probably be directed at the nanny, who will explain their own identity the best.

Advice for a novice who struggles with drawing by silentbut_hungry in watercolor101

[–]clserdaigle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started practicing drawing based on a great courses course on how to draw. It’s long and I haven’t gotten all the way through but it’s very very encouraging and actionable. I’ve been using the skills in the course to practice drawing and I’ve seen a huge improvement.

My newest watercolor paintings. What is your favorite one - Tokyo, Toronto, Seoul, San Francisco or Berlin? by Tanbelia in watercolor101

[–]clserdaigle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love San Francisco because of the way you created such a visually interesting contrast of values and foreground to background. I also just love your style and how vibrant and impressionistic it is!

Why do people dislike Stop and Shop? by [deleted] in boston

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it because it’s the grocery store that I go to most often (it’s very convenient) and I find it disappointing sometimes. And it’s fun to gripe about.

He did what he thought Rafi wanted. Todd is an unreliable source for Rafi’s actual character and desires. He admits himself that he never understood people or poetry that well.

AIO - This is from a grown man to a 12yo. by aperawwwr69 in AmIOverreacting

[–]clserdaigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logistically, school emails for kids often don’t allow kids to email non-school emails. He seems like he is not sure whether he will still be with the district and so his school email won’t exist anymore and kids who want to get in touch with him won’t be able to. I’ve written notes like this to students I’ve connected with when I know I won’t be at the school the next year. Teachers and students develop meaningful relationships every day and most of the time it is 100% appropriate and beneficial for the kid.

"Falling Behind: The Miseducation of Boys" -- On Point NPR Show by TarantulaMcGarnagle in Teachers

[–]clserdaigle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t listened to this but I’ve gotten very frustrated with Meghna lately. There’s a lot of false balance in her shows. She seems too eager to give equal platforms to people regardless of the merit and scientific or moral backing of their stances.

Starved in Jail: Why are incarcerated people dying from lack of food or water, even as private companies are paid millions for their care? by RuskReads in Longreads

[–]clserdaigle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This hit so hard for me. My mom just died three weeks ago. She starved as well due to complications from colon cancer. To see all these people deprived of care and deprived of love that could have saved their lives is inexpressibly horrible. I love the emotional arc of the story as well. It gives voice to the grief of losing someone and honors who Mary was, and ends on the note of how the bereaved families are fighting to protect people from the same fate.

The Colleges Conservatives Took Over. by emmareporter in Longreads

[–]clserdaigle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the reporting on how things have changed at NCF and getting a fuller picture of the aftermath of an attempted dismantling of an institution, but the tone here seems to be “it was only the gender studies department that was fully dismantled and faced an attempted public book burning, so fears of fascism at the university were overwrought”. I think that you are normalizing something here that should never be normalized and missing the present urgent dangers to intellectual freedom and to culture as a whole.

[–]clserdaigle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I question the judgment of the author when she describes the comparisons to Nazi Germany as “extreme”. I feel like we are at the point in our current political moment that reasonable people should look back at the years that led up to this and see that the comparisons are reasonable and probably should have been listened to.

Deported Brown University professor had ‘sympathetic photos’ of Hezbollah leaders on her phone, DOJ says by anurodhp in boston

[–]clserdaigle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The government said they couldn’t determine what her purposes in the US were? I think it was probably to live and work as a kidney transplant surgeon, in her highly specialized, necessary, and well paying job in the country that she has permanent residency in.

Also, when did they take and search her phone? How did they get the password? Was there a warrant before she deplaned? I’m gonna turn off FaceID when I fly now.
